  • I picked up this Husqvarna lawn mower at a yard sale for $30 and the owner said it was not cutting well. lets put it up on the bench for a good service and find out what was causing it?

    I worked at a small engine repair shop about 25 years ago. Even then the owner told me that his competition was a $99 mower from whatever big box stores were around. We had a $59 service special on your typical Briggs push mower which included changing the oil, pulling the blower housing, blowing the dust out, sharpening the blades, cleaning or replacing the air filter, carburetor diaphragm, spark plug, and head gasket. While the head was off, we decarboned it and lapped and adjusted the valves. Was about an hour and a half of labor and about $10 in parts at the time. After this treatment they would usually run like new. This was in the days before overhead valve engines, and breaker points were still around on older mowers we saw.
    We had a quick test to see if repairing an old mower was viable, we turned it over with the spark plug disconnected and spun it backwards. If the engine offered no resistance backing up the power stroke, or the crankshaft was bent, we told the customer not to bother. Other things that usually totalled old mowers were problems with the self propelled mechanism, and rusted out decks.
    In the day we also had to deal with the valve seats on the Briggs engines popping out. It was a warranty repair, and the official fix was to reinsert the valve seat, and use a center punch to punch divots around the edge of the seat to expand the metal. I learned a lot from him, even though I had been repairing mowers on my own since I was a kid.

    • @MrTruckerf
      @MrTruckerf 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The punch method is called staking, and I have used it on many different applications. Basically anything you don't want to move, stake it.

      @@MrTruckerf That skill came in handy later on when I started working on mail extraction machines. The cutter assemblies would have bronze bushings pressed into aluminum plates that would sometimes work loose.

    When I was a young guy (about 10 yrs old), my Dad would ask for assistance while repairing small engines. I wish he would've let me do more of it on my own. It may have kindled the spark earlier, that I now have. Problem is, he passed about 7 years later. I have the spark, but lost the mentor.

Either I can't get it running, or I do get it running but I'm not sure exactly what I did right-it just starts working again-so I never really learn from experience. I have the identical mower. I changed the oil after the first season and it was glittery with metal. Then changed it again at the 3rd season, it was barely dark and had almost no metallic glitter. Briggs claims to have made some changes to the engine to lengthen the life of the oil (2800 vs 3600rpm, better air filtration to catch dirt, better oil cooling, tighter manufacturing tolerances) but I am still going to change the oil to get the debris out. I have no doubt it will die an earlier death with no oil changes, but I know plenty of neighbors who never change, check OR add oil, so it seems all the marketing in the world can't teach idiots to care for their stuff.

    It's nice to get a bargain when someone does not know what they're doing.
    A few years back I picked up a backpack blower. In the ad it said used for one season and now it will not start. When I made contact with the owner he explained that he would rather buy new one and he just wants $20 for it. I went straight over there and it looked exactly like in the picture. I pulled the cord all that scene fine so I gave him the money and then he gave me the brand new gas can that he bought for that.
    As soon as I returned home I went out to the garage and started checking things. That's when I noticed the on and off switch was in the off position. I hit the primer ball pulled the cord once and it started up immediately.

I've had the same lawn mower for the last 15 years, and it still works just as good as the day I bought it. I change my oil every season, and I sharpen the blade every season. I also switched out the oil from the standard 30 weight, to synthetic 5w 30, which really causes a little bit more oil burn, but it's a better oil.

While I don't actually remember if I found the procedure in the owners manual or online, I simply turned the mower on it's side and drained the oil out of it while I took care of other projects, come back a while later and fill it with new oil. I ended up selling it with a trailer, zero turn and a cheap weed eater and blower as a package.

    When I was a kid in the late 70s early 80s, my dad had a briggs and straten and he didn't change the oil for 11 years. He just kept adding oil. It would still run but every time I had to use it, it filled the whole yard with smoke because the rings were shot. But it still ran. I always thought that was impressive. After he died, my mom sold it to the yard maintenance company she was hiring and they honed it and put a new set of rings and it ran great. It was one of the old 3.5 HP models with no safety stuff so you didn't have to hold anything on the handle to keep it running. I think it was Wards or Sears.

    Mustie you should show people about reading the sticker on the side of the gas tank. It tells you how long the engine will perform according to emissions. They rate it for hours until it wears out. If you read these labels it will tell you how disposable it is. Each engine from Briggs will have its own rating. The longer it lasts before it is wore out is a good way to tell if it is worth spending more money on a different model. I was surprised to find how different the ratings were for different models of chain saws from the same manufacturer .

    I bought a brand new 22" Yard Machine 10 years ago and have never changed the oil. I check the level every so often and add some if I need to. Still starts on the first pull and runs perfect. The blade could probably use a sharpening or be replaced. But it still cuts good enough.

    I was out shopping last year and , along with my buddy, signed up for a mower giveaway. A nice drag you behind Craftsman 21 inch mower. 163 cc's of Briggs power. My buddy won it. I'm not so lucky . Well he couldn't use it as he has a one square yard of grass at his place. So I've used it ,washed it waxed it romanced it and in general really liked the workout it gives. Was mowing a few days ago and sputters and died. Tried to start it, nope won't start. Later I tried it again and it fired first pull hit it's governed speed and died. Took it apart found noting of interest in the carb, no dirt and I don't use ethanol fuel in any of my 15 PC's of yard equipment. Does the same thing starts once hits the govenor (sp) and dies. It has about 10 hours on the engine and it's been serviced 3 times in a year and a half. Oil is cheap. Filters are cheap and I change them when needed. What am I missing if you have an idea. I would love to hear it. Thanks.

    before you go messing under any lawn mower you should disconnect the spark plug.
    you could easily chop off your hand if the mower was to start up while servicing
    it may be possible that it is a 2 cycle and it has some internal porting that injects the oil into the firing chamber
    i know in the 80s some mopeds that used 2 cycle engines had a separate oil bottle so no need to mix. you just add the fuel and oil to their respective bottles and internally they was mixed.

I know a lot of older Motors, as they aged it was recommended that you started putting 2-cycle oil in with the gas, just to make sure the piston rings were well lubricated.

      I've heard of people just replacing the filter every 3,000 miles, and just adding the oil necessary to fill the filter. Some taxi drivers have reported 160,000 miles on their engines that way.(I don't know if I believe it or not) Others have used synthetic oil and bypass filters(Frantz) and have had pretty good success, by replacing filters and adding oil, no drain and fill.

      @@vincentrobinette1507 What's the point? Is oil really that expensive?

    • @vincentrobinette1507
      @vincentrobinette1507 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maeflower5108 It's not the cost of the new oil, unless it's some exotic synthetic, like "Amsoil". For me, the problem is, what to do with the used oil. It's very hard for me to find a place, that will accept my 16 quarts of used oil from my generators, lawnmower, rototiller, wood chipper, pressure washer, and slide cutter. It just seems that their used oil tanks are always full. another thing, if an engine is properly broken in, you can change the oil once per season, and know, that the engine will likely out-last the machine that it's on.
      For the taxi drivers, they can change their oil filters with no tools, and it takes only a few minutes. A filter only costs a few dollars, and the money they save, can go towards a new car, which is worn worse than the engine anyway. The trick is, to spend only as much money on maintenance as necessary, to ensure the engine outlasts the car, or the machine it's on.

      @@vincentrobinette1507 no engine can possibly run 160,000 miles with no oil changes & just filter changes & topping up, doing this the oil yes is still slippery & keeps things moving but through time oil looses it's ability to protect even if it is keeping things moving it will not protect as it should & things will wear out a lot quicker , the key to keeping any engine good is very regular oil & filter changes to keep clean as possible oil in the engine & oil that also has good protection & detergents for keeping engines cleaner

The only thing wrong was one of the blade bolts fell off and blade got damage in the shield and was stuck. I had a replacement blade.. and bolt.. didn't have the heart to keep it as it was an elderly neighbor of mine. He loves that mower till this day.

    Full synthetic oil? Even running full synthetic I would still change the oil but I wonder if that's the reasoning behind the no oil change.
    There have been tests done on FS oil and it does last a very long time compared to conventional oil before it starts losing its viscosity.

    I pick up stuff like that often. Picked up a John Deer weed trimmer. Had been run for who knows how long with no filter. Someone couldn't get it to run and put on the curb. Cleaned the carb on it... fired right up. My neighbor threw out a Ryobi edger attachment when they moved. I picked it up to clean up and put on craigslist for a few bucks. Since the JD was the same as the Ryobi it worked. I used it for a season as an edger. Sold the trimmer the other day with the attachment for 50 bucks so I could pick up a 35 dollar edger attachment for my Echo. Was a nice trade and it netted about 15 bucks. On the hunt for a better mower than the one I have.... cheap! Wish I could find one as nice as that with a backward blade!
