My wife and I watched this yesterday. What an intense movie. The opening scene was a shocker. If you can get passed that, you are in for an emotional ride of reflection and desperation. As someone who weighed 355 pounds a year and a half ago and lost 100 pounds in a year, I *completely* understand the physical situation that he was in. But this movie is *NOT* about his weight. It's about his legacy: His impact on his students and his daughter & his relationship with his lover's sister. It's about the question "did I make a difference?" Or "who will remember me when I'm gone?" And " *why* will they remember me?" ... What a great movie. I love Fraser in "With Honors". His comedies were ok, but that early drama was intense and Excellent. This movie was a return to form. I loved this movie and can't wait to see Brendan Fraser again on screen.
Good to see Brendan Fraser back on screen. Glad he's back after his personal struggles and his being "black balled". I'm definitely going to try to support and see this.
As a parent this film hit different. The father daughter relationship was very moving to me. I think Sadie Sink did a real good job, though, her character could have been a bit more filled out with the writing to show the pain/hurt and love she still has for her dad. They seemed to be very close before he left. I hear and appreciate the representation critiques. Complicates the feeling about the film, but overall a lot of good to great acting with Brendan Frasier’s and Hong Chau’s (loved her in Watchmen) performance. Thanks for the review!
saw it twice within 2 days..loved this film !!..never cried so much especially at the end...both times the audience stayed till the very end until the lights came back on cause of the emotions that it leaves you on...Bravo Brandon for being the best Charlie ....
I don’t see the film as a fatphobic or anti fat. I see it as an anti bulimia & anti anorexia. I struggle with binge eating so I saw a lot of myself in him when he would emotionally eat.
i personally enjoyed my first watch, i can see why there has been many mixed views but for what the screenplay provided i thought the entire cast did their best and also showcased one of if not their best performances in a film. great review by the way, should be going sometime this next week for a second viewing!
El, I was looking thru your vids, I didn't see anything on The Banshees Of Inisherin. It hit HBO Max yesterday. I'd love to hear your take on that. Amazing freakin film.
I have seen The Whale. I am obese. I have empathy for obese people. Many are obese and hyper-radical. You would think thinner people would be haters enough! This is a story based on elements on the playwright’s life. Charlie’s food was his heroin. It is not that way for everyone. Obesity has been proven to be a physical disease. Aronovsky has never made a boring movie. It is very hard for a fat person to say themselves portrayed o the screen unless they are as funny as a late Chris Farley or M’Nique, before she came back as sleek as a BMW. Brendan Fraser was the only actor in ten years Aronofsky wanted. He did not think another actor could handle the role. He and Fraser and screenwriter Hunter went to meet with the Association for the Obesity Coalition to meet with members about dealing with obesity in their lives (I am a member but I never met with them, by Zoom). They did their homework. You were right about so many things in a stellar review. I will be following you. I was never a fan of Fraser’s. I hated Mother! But this movie was an Oscar winner. You called it! Thank you! Abbe
the music was so well done in the scenes where he was eating. You could keep the music and replace it with something really morbid like cannibalism and it would still keep the same level of unsettling discomfort.
I'm sorry but why even bring up the controversies? The controversies behind this is beyond stupid! There's been lots of other movies when actors play people who are anorexic. What's the difference there? And if people want to be offended about an obese people, why not get offended about your classic stereotypes we've seen probably thousands of times.. You have your nerds, jocks, etc. Great review tho! haha.. I can't wait to see this. I love Brendan Fraser.
I wouldn’t stay it’s stupid for people to have their opinion on how their portrayal on screen but I hope this doesn’t effect the films chances for awards.
Well, it’s worth discussing the different ways the audience can interpret the portrayals in this film and its depictions. That’s art. Not everyone is going feel the same. I appreciate the nuanced discussion.
I think the obesity is a physical reflection on how slippery the slope of depression can get and personally I’d prefer getting a good actor and accommodating him than getting a fat person who can’t act
I'm so tired of hearing authenticity bullshit. It's acting. The entire point is to be somebody other than yourself. That's the entire point of it. The point is not having somebody who lived it, play it. There's no guarantee that even works. It's ridiculous. There is a wrong answer and you said it.
Brendan Fraser was great in 'No Sudden Moves' i thought that movie went under the radar because it went straight to HBOmax, i think i will wait till this movie comes on streaming though great review 👍🏿👍🏿
would the standing ovation have happened if the actor was actually closer to the the character’s size? I feel that the ovation happened because this film was a confirmation bias. At least in part.
I think ovation only happened because this is being seen as Fraser's big comeback, and those in the audience more than likely knew a good bit of all of the turmoil he went through in his personal life that drove him away from the limelight for some years. I don't even think the ovation would have happened if it were anyone else period
The story is horrible. He's a cheater who leaves his wife and child. It's vile. I'm supposed to feel sorry for him just because he's dying from obesity? Nope, karma bites. You don't abandon your own family because you decide you're gay. NOPE Edit: I have the right to my opinion. If you don't like it idgaf. Scroll. IMO Charlie was an asshole.
I didn’t think the movie as a feel sorry or shame type. I was intrigued of the casts backstory and their interactions than feeling sorry for Charlie’s situation. He put himself in this position and I was anticipating him to confront the issues and make amends to the people in his life. I disagree that the movie is horrible there’s a lot that can be taken from it.

Yeh I’m glad he’s back as well as has been great in Doom Patrol.

I haven't watched movies in a while, so haven't watched reviews. I forgot how good you are. Thank you for your insight.
Was torn on seeing it due to recent mixed reviews but I said I'll wait on Elliott's review to decide lol I'll check it out tomorrow hopefully!
Let me know your thoughts Reginald after you’ve seen it.

People who think it’s offensive are just projecting and should probably go on a diet
I can’t wait to check this out!!!
Let me know your thoughts when you do.
I'm really looking forward to this one based on your excellent review. Great job, E.
Appreciate it David.
The poem you refer to. Who is the author? thank you
It's so hard to find this movie anywhere 😢
Yeah it’s limited right now but goes wide on the 21st. Are you located near a large city area?
@@MovieFiles Not from the USA sadly. In fact, very far. I'll just wait for the movie on physical media.
@@frozenwishstudios Gotcha. Yeah I’m sure it be available on vod in a couple weeks.
I literally cannot wait to see this one!

I really liked the movie. Some hard parts to watch for sure. Maybe a lil too much religious stuff for me. The score and acting were excellent.

Yeah it's pretty stupid. We're on the track to people only playing themselves and then acting will cease to exist. Awesome.
Well, it’s worth discussing the different ways the audience can interpret the portrayals in this film and its depictions. That’s art. Not everyone is going feel the same. I appreciate the nuanced discussion.
I know Aronofsky is known for his trippy visuals and storytelling style did he dive into any of that this film?
Being grounded approach for the most part but there is one shot that’s definitely more trippy in the film.
@@MovieFiles interesting would you say it’s a must watch in theaters
I cannot WAIT to see this!
Appreciate you watching my review Julie.
Unfortunately though, being 600 lbs is a early sentence. Should we really gloss over that?
Why is it everybody belongs to a group and gets offended? I did not see this as a commentary on obesity. Instead, as one man's journey.

Bullshit. This comment is complete nonsense

I don’t like movies like this
Sorry, but have no interest in this one. Heard it was boring and bad.
The only movie I liked from this director was The Wrestler.
This film is closest to The Wrestler in comparison to his other films.

I suspect this is not so simple. But I haven't seen it. However life is far more complicated than he did this then he suffer that.
