I love acquiring interesting vintage gear. The biggest problem I run into however is that I end up with too much of it. Then I can’t bring myself to part with any of it.

I agree vintage equipment still sounds amazing. I have found good deals at thrift stores. Two items I found are a ADCOM GFA-555 for $45.00 and a pair of JBL L100 Century speakers for $55.00. The Adcom amp is worked perfectly, however the JBL L100 speakers had to repair the speaker cabinets. I put on some Van Morrison or Rolling Stones and get lost in the music!

I've had my b&w speakers for over 15 years. Best investment I've ever made. Recently upgraded my amp, to a second hand marantz amp and added a DAC. Singing better than ever.

most of the speed problems on this turntable is actually the micro switches that select the speed my sl-1100a has original caps and they are still working flawlessly but i had to replace the micro switch for the 45 speed and the speed was rock solid
Very well reviewed and love the system. For my legacy system, a dual cs 607, a marantz 2270, a pioneer ctf 1250 cassette, a pioneer equalizer and sound effects generator, and the speakers are ess ps-9, the two way, heil with an 8 inch woofer. I did find a brand new dual cs 708q never opened for 200 bucks not including shipping. This was a find. I have always been a fan of dual turntables. I'd like to find a cs 608 one day.
I love vintage equipment and this is a really nice interesting system. I have two sets of speakers here in the UK and my second pair are identical B&W 601 S2 (I'm currently using Audiomasters so these are boxed at the moment) and agree that they are good speakers for what they cost, and despite their size do have a good extended bass. Technics turntables were the 'must have' decks for DJ's for many years - they are reliable and sound good, my own JBE slate deck even has a Technics motor fitted as standard.
I had the very same Technics turntable when it debuted in '73, sorely regret selling it. I've been on the lookout to obtain another. Great job in finding such a gem at the price you paid!
The real secret to your budget hi fi system is those B&W speakers, the speakers are always the most important component, and for $50 they will sound terrific, and you can upgrade the caps on the crossovers with new, higher quality ones for not much money that will improve their sound even more. I'm now into very high end systems, but hats off to you for your choices and budget approach. Those will not produce the big bass some would like to hear (like me), but you can always add a subwoofer (or two) at some point later. Or even better, build your own, you would only need one good quality 10 inch bass driver in a large box (@ 2 cu ft) to get amazing bass, you could build the box yourself for very little money (I obviously build my own speakers).
Love to see the DM601 S2 getting some love. They were incrrdible when released and in my opinion were never bested by newer versions. The front port makes them perfect for near field listening. I use mine as computer speakers with a simple class D amp and couldnt be happier even i paid like 5 times what you did albeit for a pair in pristine condition. Enjoy your score
In Nov. 2019 I scored a pair of Ohm Acoustics model H speakers, circa about 1980 (they have the two tweeter level controls). These systems were restored cosmetically and sonically (with Ohm drivers) and sound magnificent. Original price in 1979, when I wanted them was $700+ the pair. Way outta my budget in those days. I paid $275 for my pair of model H speakers. That is a steal. Also got a Denon DRM-800A cassette deck (restored) for $125 in 2019. Lotsa great deals out there but caveat emptor, buyer beware. Interesting video.
Bought my used 601s2s 6 or 7 years ago, same reason and purpose. Great minds Great design rack for combo vinyl storage and display Nice nak found deal. As most viewers probably know, big issue with vintage audio gear >30yrs old is cap aging, needing recapping and perhaps other corroded electrical parts and pots. Just need to keep in mind to assess value of items, ie restoration costs
I Love Old Audio equipment just they were too big and bulky. I have 20 year old Sony CD and Sony MD also a rarely new Sony Turntable, just purchased a New Sony 2chnl amp cant wait to set them all u. Great video. Unfortunately, I acquired my vintage gear when it was brand new and paid the prices for it then. My Nakamichi SR-3A tuner is still putting out 45 w per channel and drives my Klipsch Cornwall II speakers beautifully. My B&O beo gram 1700 turntable still plays the vinyl like it did decades ago. Of course, the speakers are the star of the show. They cost me $400 each back in 1979. They have appreciated nicely since then, and, Like the Klipschorn, they have been in continuous production since the 1950s, or earlier. I was naive enough the assume that Nakamichi was a Japanese product. I have learned since that it is Chinese. I don't think B&O manufactures turntables any longer. Of course, anything they made was a piece of art. This one sounds good as well. New equipment costs a fortune, so your approach is one many of us will emulate. Keep up the good work.
I also have a Technics SL-1100a i also have the dust cover and strobe for mine and that turntable is a beast and sounds amazing only thing mine is missing is the original platter mat but i pulled one off a dead jvc turntable that i may fix in the future . I also have a video of my deck running a shibata cart and another video of it playing a 3 inch record lol
Yea a few years ago my mom wanted my dad to get rid of his big D9 Cerwin Vega speakers because the foam surrounds on the woofers were rotten but I did some research and found a company called simply speakers and they have the exact same surrounds for the Cerwin vega speakers so i bought them did the repair myself and they sound like new again and they rock the house lol so if you got old gear that's worn out fix it up and have some fun.
The other part I get out of it is this is the "GREEN" thing to do! I always get a laugh out of people that say they are green but everything they buy is brand new. I've got a sweet Pioneer PL-560 picked up at a thrift store for $16, then a set of early 1960s KLH Model Six speakers, and a nice Yamaha CR-800 receiver (also thrift store find). I continue to find records out there for 50 cents to $2. Sure, they need a good cleaning, but most are in very good condition otherwise. My stereo stand is a $5 old one picked up at Habitat 4 Humanity. My biggest expensive was the speakers. Bought from a guy that repairs and resells them. I'm still under $200 total. Once you. get the thrift store bug, you can find other gear, move it to a new home, give it to friends, or resell it and offset your vintage stereo spending.
Very nice! This is why i hunt and collect vintage gear. I can attest to most of yours having some of the same models. Even though i have plenty of vinyl, i don't have the time to listen as i did. I'll have to pick up your last cartridge. If you see the s3's for a good price grab them. That said, if you find just about anything B&W at a great price, read up if you don't know the model, but, 9 out of 10 times its going to be a very good sounding speaker with the right gear. I've had a set of 601 s1's for years and love them. Currently being used in my workshop set up with a NAD 3020i. I recently found a B&W AS1 8" active subwoofer at a dump shop for $10!! It has hi pass inputs and is a great match with the 601's for a little more kick. Keep an eye out for Canton speakers if you want something to trump the B&W's for cheap. I will never part with my Karat 920 Canton's ... amazing! Great videos, keep it up.

Nice setup with 601, I use Nak Ta-4A & MB-1 & CDP-2a hook to 603 s1 almost 20 yrs, but always change RCA cables for better sound, I used BJC LC-1 match with Nak, but the result was not impressive (after 90 hrs burn in for cables), after try Mogami KLEI 2803 absolutely harmony & the result is WOW!! My RCA search is done after 2549,2964 & 2497 (2497 will be 90% of 2803). By the way reply for your another post, if you can find CDP-2A or CDC-4A, worth to get it used or repair. They do the magic only use 16 bit DAC, but sound better than 20bit MB-1 & my 24 bit A-10 DVD player. Go ahead get the 2803 & you will see big improvement for clarity & sound stage.

I just decided to upgrade my hi fi but no way was I going to pay for new! I used to have a Pioneer set of separates and Celestion 3 way floor mounted speakers from the late 70's before I got married and was "persuaded", to swap them for a more space friendly Sony micro system I lived with for 25 years! Having now retired and got back into music, I started to fill the considerable holes in my vinyl collection and the Sony never cut it! So I did some research and decided to go for Cambridge Audio equipment and found a new old set of separates that included a 65 watt per channel amp, a quality CD and a tuner I never wanted but came as part of the set. These were all still boxed and had never been opened and had been in dry storage for 8 years following a guys divorce! I bought the set that had originally been sold for £800 for £200 - I had to change the CD drive belt as it had degraded and lost its pliability, but the seller even paid for that! Sounded great through a set of Wharfdale Diamond 6.0's I had bought for £35, but I wanted more and bought a pair of Mordant Short 3 way floor mounted 906's that still sell for £500 new, but I got my immaculate 8 year old units for £100 . My son bought me an Audio Technics deck and now I have a brilliant set up for a fraction of the new price that sounds as good today as the day it all moved off the shop shelf! So don't be afraid of investing in older gear - as Mr Cutter says it's fun!
It would have been complete with a sound file of your purchased set.. other than that, nice vid! I wanna hear the setup. My hifi journey started in around the 1980's. I still have my Nakamichi Re-202 special auto reverse deck eating dust somewhere in the house. I did recently reinstall my tube amps (after repairs) and speakers, bought a DAC and the old days are back in new form. Sold my Yamaha pf-800 turntable many years ago.. thinking I was done with hifi setups and now kinda regret it. Can't have it all.. I just might buy an old 1 again.
My Technics cd player that was top of the range in 1994 is still going strong as are the two 1000 MK2 power amps and the marching pre amp, they'll probably see me out

nice, just one thing, that is not MDF, it is particle board, also known as chipboard, it is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. MDF is Medium-density fibreboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into very fine wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is stronger, and more dense, than particle board
Nice!. I do the same, I buy up any high end vintage gear I find for cheap. I’m always circulating my gear, upgrading each time. But if I buy something I know is worth a ton more than I paid, I put a big price on it and throw it up on ebay. It will eventually sell for a good profit. I have to because there is too much stuff in my basement, and a mountain of boxes.
Great setup, I like the albums I saw too 😁👍 Today at my local op-shop I found a little pair of Linn Kan bookshelf speakers. They were only $8 so I took a chance....🤔🤞 One sounds amazing, I was pretty surprised 🤩 but the other one only had a very low volume and distortion. Not sure what to do with them....take them back or keep them. 🤷♂️
Most people ignore it but some smartphones, namely Xiaomi branded phones for instance, have an infrared port and a built-in app. I control everything in my home with it. No need for a Logitech harmony in such case, you save money and simplify your setup...
The problem most audio junkies have is that it never ends. That is an incredible looking TT. Bass is over rated. Clarity and fidelity at low to moderate listening volume is the most important.

Something sturdy and heavy. Look at Monoprice Monolith stands. $120 pair. Fill them with sand or lead shot. Attach speakers to them using Blu-Tack. You will hear the difference.
Interesting . You kept calling the B&W box's MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) it is not MDF it is Particle Board . Big difference to speaker builders , don't ya know .

Enjoyed the video. My CD player I bought back in the '90s had finally quit working and I was unable to find one where I live so I ventured onto ebay and found aTeac CD player for about $50. The only thing that is wrong with it is one of the round feet is broke off (I was already aware of it before I bought it) but the other three feet holds it up just fine.

I had a pair of 602s2 B&W speakers for 18 years, still have the center, the asw2000 sub suffered cone death. Great speakers.

The mk2 is not that bad, and the motor is better. You can change arm but admit not as straight forward.

You listen to some great music. 10,000 Maniacs In My Tribe is a great album. Also a big fan of The Beautiful South! Keep hunting for audio bargains.
The Infinity Reference Studio Monitors shown at 1053 were very nice sounding speakers, I bought a pair new in 1985

Very nice! This is why i hunt and collect vintage gear. I can attest to most of yours having some of the same models. Even though i have plenty of vinyl, i don't have the time to listen as i did. I'll have to pick up your last cartridge. If you see the s3's for a good price grab them. That said, if you find just about anything B&W at a great price, read up if you don't know the model, but, 9 out of 10 times its going to be a very good sounding speaker with the right gear. I've had a set of 601 s1's for years and love them. Currently being used in my workshop set up with a NAD 3020i.
I recently found a B&W AS1 8" active subwoofer at a dump shop for $10!! It has hi pass inputs and is a great match with the 601's for a little more kick.
Keep an eye out for Canton speakers if you want something to trump the B&W's for cheap.
I will never part with my Karat 920 Canton's ... amazing!

I love that turntable. I've been wanting to pick one up for years but I just can't pull the trigger. They typically go for $500 plus up here in Canada (Toronto, Ontario). Nice setup!

Nice setup with 601, I use Nak Ta-4A & MB-1 & CDP-2a hook to 603 s1 almost 20 yrs, but always change RCA cables for better sound, I used BJC LC-1 match with Nak, but the result was not impressive (after 90 hrs burn in for cables), after try Mogami KLEI 2803 absolutely harmony & the result is WOW!! My RCA search is done after 2549,2964 & 2497 (2497 will be 90% of 2803). By the way reply for your another post, if you can find CDP-2A or CDC-4A, worth to get it used or repair. They do the magic only use 16 bit DAC, but sound better than 20bit MB-1 & my 24 bit A-10 DVD player. Go ahead get the 2803 & you will see big improvement for clarity & sound stage.

@@MODAC Some of my all-time favorite album artwork. Or artwork of any kind, really. The illustrations connect with me in a way that’s hard to describe. Brilliant. Evocative. And truly illustrate the songs, making them more powerful than on their own. I’ve spent so many hours just admiring them.
I just decided to upgrade my hi fi but no way was I going to pay for new! I used to have a Pioneer set of separates and Celestion 3 way floor mounted speakers from the late 70's before I got married and was "persuaded", to swap them for a more space friendly Sony micro system I lived with for 25 years! Having now retired and got back into music, I started to fill the considerable holes in my vinyl collection and the Sony never cut it! So I did some research and decided to go for Cambridge Audio equipment and found a new old set of separates that included a 65 watt per channel amp, a quality CD and a tuner I never wanted but came as part of the set. These were all still boxed and had never been opened and had been in dry storage for 8 years following a guys divorce! I bought the set that had originally been sold for £800 for £200 - I had to change the CD drive belt as it had degraded and lost its pliability, but the seller even paid for that! Sounded great through a set of Wharfdale Diamond 6.0's I had bought for £35, but I wanted more and bought a pair of Mordant Short 3 way floor mounted 906's that still sell for £500 new, but I got my immaculate 8 year old units for £100 . My son bought me an Audio Technics deck and now I have a brilliant set up for a fraction of the new price that sounds as good today as the day it all moved off the shop shelf! So don't be afraid of investing in older gear - as Mr Cutter says it's fun!

It would have been complete with a sound file of your purchased set.. other than that, nice vid! I wanna hear the setup. My hifi journey started in around the 1980's. I still have my Nakamichi Re-202 special auto reverse deck eating dust somewhere in the house. I did recently reinstall my tube amps (after repairs) and speakers, bought a DAC and the old days are back in new form. Sold my Yamaha pf-800 turntable many years ago.. thinking I was done with hifi setups and now kinda regret it. Can't have it all.. I just might buy an old 1 again.
My Technics cd player that was top of the range in 1994 is still going strong as are the two 1000 MK2 power amps and the marching pre amp, they'll probably see me out
Congrats on the vintage gear! Sweetness of low price AND great stuff. (I won't count how much I've spent on klunkers.) But learning and practicing simple repairs has been fun, too.

nice, just one thing, that is not MDF, it is particle board, also known as chipboard, it is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is pressed and extruded. MDF is Medium-density fibreboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into very fine wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is stronger, and more dense, than particle board
Nice!. I do the same, I buy up any high end vintage gear I find for cheap. I’m always circulating my gear, upgrading each time. But if I buy something I know is worth a ton more than I paid, I put a big price on it and throw it up on ebay. It will eventually sell for a good profit. I have to because there is too much stuff in my basement, and a mountain of boxes.

Today at my local op-shop I found a little pair of Linn Kan bookshelf speakers. They were only $8 so I took a chance....🤔🤞
One sounds amazing, I was pretty surprised 🤩 but the other one only had a very low volume and distortion.
Not sure what to do with them....take them back or keep them. 🤷♂️

Most people ignore it but some smartphones, namely Xiaomi branded phones for instance, have an infrared port and a built-in app. I control everything in my home with it. No need for a Logitech harmony in such case, you save money and simplify your setup...
You can pick up a second hand Harmony for less than $20. Well worth it. No interest in owning a Xaomi phone.
The problem most audio junkies have is that it never ends. That is an incredible looking TT. Bass is over rated. Clarity and fidelity at low to moderate listening volume is the most important.
Steal on that 1100. Been searching and searching for a pair.

Something sturdy and heavy. Look at Monoprice Monolith stands. $120 pair. Fill them with sand or lead shot. Attach speakers to them using Blu-Tack. You will hear the difference.

Enjoyed the video. My CD player I bought back in the '90s had finally quit working and I was unable to find one where I live so I ventured onto ebay and found aTeac CD player for about $50. The only thing that is wrong with it is one of the round feet is broke off (I was already aware of it before I bought it) but the other three feet holds it up just fine.
