Hi, the Wavestation sound is not Warm strings but Whisper Voices (number 20). Warm Strings is used on the first half of Fading Lights (the reprise after the instrumental section is Octave Strings). Whisper voices is also used on Dreaming while you sleep. Tony started the tour out with the VFX-SD but switched to the SD1 first revision somewhere during the tour (possibly for the European gigs, not sure). A VFX was apparently always ready backstage. I kind of assumed that the electric piano sound was from the JD800 as he continued using that sound on subsequent tours when he did not have the Ensoniq's around and I therefor assumed he used the JD990 for it, (I use a Roland patch but forgot which one).
Whisper Voices sounded a bit too "breathy" to me when comparing to the live version. I've heard a lot about Tony using the SD1 on this tour but I personally haven't seen a single good image where you can see either the color of the front panel "graphics" or the logo. Only shot that I've seen like this is from the rehearsal footage where you can see the VFX SD logo. Tony most likely sampled the sound for the later tours like he did with a lot of other sounds. If I'm not completely mistaken Tony got a JD990 in his rig for the first time for the 2007 tour.
@@GenesisKeyboardCovers Just checked, it is Whisper Voices live as well both in 1992 and 2007. I can clearly hear that breathy quality and the lack of that really annoying low-mid range that muddies up these particular chords when using Warm Strings. Just be aware that your touch response of the keyboard can add additional brightness to the sound and so might the position of the joystick. The setting Tony probably has for keyboard response is "4". My check also revealed that the piano sound used from the JD990 is actually different, in 2007 that sound is much brighter and has more of a "Full-Tines" quality (from the DX7). It's kind of a thing I overlooked as I never listen to the 2007 shows, only some of the tunes like Domino/HBTS because they are lowered in key and in my Genesis tribute we play them in those keys too. But no you are not fully correct, Tony got the JD990 already after WCD and featured it both on Strictly Inc (along with the 01/W) and Calling all stations record (along with the Trinity). I know he had the JD800 still with him and used it on the CAS tour too, but as a controller I assume. The JD800 would remain in his home studio/writing room till just a few years ago when he finally sold it, he actually used the JD800 during the writing of his orchestral stuff as he likes some of the string sounds and I assume he loved the keybed itself). He used the JD990 in 2007 for some of the WCD related sounds. The only Ensoniq sound he sampled into his rig is Florida-Keys for Jesus he knows me but apart from rehearsals, that sound never made the shows and it is still an assumption that he kind of sampled it as it is a really unique sound and so defining for the song. All these brass sounds like in No son of mine were all replaced at later tours (with JD990). Tony was never really that concerned with sampling his old sounds to perfectly recreate them. He even had recreations of some of his Synclavier and other sounds in his JD800 so it's not too far of a stretch to think he would almost have used those too for the shows.

I was looking forward to this one... It's one of my favorite Genesis rides! You played it so well with lots of skill, as always! I note that you chose another preset, used it seems to me in the title Fading light (among other things) that the initial sound of Banks (Whisper voice) - Honestly, it did not bother me because the rendering is clean and quite ultimately close to a live version. I tried to pay attention to the chords played but for a tutorial (which you put in the description), it would perhaps have been necessary to dissect and refine certain passages a little more. Never mind: it’s a superb cover! Well done and thank you!
I tried to match the parts I played to what Tony can be seen playing on the concert films from 92. There were some parts that you couldn't see so I just tried to match them as close as I could by ear.
