Genesis - Turn It On Again Cover/Tutorial
I play Tony Banks' keyboard parts from "Turn It On Again" originally released on their 1980 Duke album. The track I used in the background is from The Way We Walk Live video.
I used the Rhodes MK80. Originally Tony would have also used a Rhodes MK80 along with a Kurzweil 1000PX
Recorded and mixed in Ableton Live 11.

    Absolutely mind blowing! You nailed it as exactly as you could! Beautifully done! You mention having used tons of samples: Could you share what instrument is each sample/sound from? I recall you only mentioning the Emulator II Shakuhachi and the Kurzw organ. I believe many of us Genesis fans have been searching for this insight. Would love if you could assist. Very well done again!

      All of the sounds I play on the MK80 (To my knowledge. I thought I should mention this since mine are just recreations and not the original ones) originate from the Emulator II excluding the ghost sound effects. Those are a combo of Synclavier "Voices 1" and a modulated sine wave. For the Kurzweil organ I used the Wavestation wave called "Organ 2". It and the Kurzweil sound nearly identical though the Kurzweil has a better leslie effect.

      Could you share the names of the Emulator samples you used? And also some insight on the sounds you’re playing on the Ensoniq?

    • @GenesisKeyboardCovers

      @@samanipreston The only one I know the exact name of is the Shakuhachi. I found most of the samples in those EMU CD sample libraries and I modified them quite a bit. The Ensoniq pads are all done on Repro 5 and Dexed. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the bass sound for The Last Domino. I had to give up and just used the same sound as I did on Land Of Confusion.

    I'll tell you a little story. It was April 2004. I was at home, bored and saw a DVD of The Way We Walk on the shelf (I was living with my parents at the time). Wasn't a huge Genesis fan back then, didn't even know how it was different from Phil Collins 😀. So, I put on the DVD and was blown away immediately when the first song (Land of Confusion) started. And stayed blown away until the end. Immediately went and asked my dad, who was a huge prog fan, if he had any Genesis CDs. He handed me the complete discography 😀. He also recommended I start with A Trick of the Tail and Foxtrot, so I did. Immediately fell in love, every single one of the songs on both of those albums was absolute perfection. And of course after that I listened to all the other albums and Genesis became my absolute favorite band of all time. Was also lucky enough to see them live in 2007 and 2022. And that's how I became a Genesis fan and remain so to this day. And it all started with The Way We Walk DVD and Land of Confusion. So - thank you so much for making this cover, it sounds absolutely fantastic 🙂

    Could you please tell me how you get the high pitch arpeggio effect which comes in at 9.52 please?? You're playing a downward run that goes: B flat, G sharp, F sharp, E over and over, but have you added a delay effect?? @@GenesisKeyboardCovers Hi, thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to get back to me, I really appreciate it!! So I take it you sampled the Synclavier preset and that's what you're playing?? That is so cool and speaks volumes about your attention to detail!! I don't have a sampler or a Synclavier, so I'll improvise a sound and put a heavy downward portamento glide on it, I'm sure I'll get something close!! Thanks again, being a Genesis fan of 44 years thus far and with Tony Banks being my all time number 1 keyboard playing idol, I absolutely love your videos and I'm sure Tony would be very moved and flattered by them too as your videos pay his immense talent the ultimate compliment!! Keep up the great work my friend!! All my very best, Andre, Liverpool UK!!

      @@GenesisKeyboardCovers PS: If I could, may I suggest a Genesis keyboard cover for you to have a go at please?? To my knowledge, NOBODY has ever even tried it and, even worse than that, this piece of music never even gets acknowledged, doesn't have a name and it's not even mentioned on the album sleeve credits!! Personally, I love it as it's so dark and eerie!! On the legendary album 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway,' my second favourite Genesis album ever after Trick Of The Tail, there is a song which ALL Genesis fans know and love called 'In The Cage!!' A song which was always the highlight of any Genesis live show!! However, on the original 'Lamb' album, as 'In The Cage' fades out and before 'The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging' begins, this really spooky, mysterious little musical interlude, which Tony must've played on his Arp Pro-Soloist and Mellotron fades in!! If you know the album, you'll know what I'm referring to, it only lasts around 53 seconds!! I'd absolutely love to see you have a go at it, so I'll keep an eye out and continue to watch this space!! Just a thought!! Thanks again for the reply and the Synclavier video link, I'm absolutely bouncing off the walls!! Keep up the great work!! Andre!!

    • @GenesisKeyboardCovers
      @GenesisKeyboardCovers หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andremcpherson1424 Absolutely! No problem! I really love getting into the technical side of the keyboards. The search for these sounds is very rewarding when you do find the right one. Banks used a lot of the presets on the Synclavier so most of the sounds can be found on those timbre disks. Getting recognized by Tony himself is definitely a dream of mine. That In The Cage outro is definitely interesting since it sounds like a polysynth. Most likely it would be multiple ARP Pro Soloist tracks on top of each other like you mentioned. I've mostly thought that if I do cover In The Cage it will be as a part of the 1984 medley which I may even say is my favorite Genesis piece/medley of all time. Currently I'm two pieces away from finishing the 1992 setlist of course I've left the hardest two as the last ones.

    This is my fav song, between the pedal tone and the constant meter changes that both highlight unresolved tension... similar to that of my own life. IMHO, the best ever recording of this song was on the Three Sides Live album of the 1981-82 tour. The Yamaha CP-70 electric grand piano is the central instrument here, no MIDI, no layering, just pure unadulterated (albeit chorused) exhibition of the instrument that did for Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins what the piano-forte did for Beethoven: allowed for the writing of music that would otherwise not have been written (BTW, that is my CP-80 featured in my avatar). The synthesizer on that recording was a Prophet-10 that tuned 2 oscillators apart by a fourth, enabling the line to be played with one finger of the left hand while the right hand stayed on the piano. One comment: during the "bridge," you are playing Dmaj-Dmaj-Dmaj-Cmaj... Dmaj-Dmaj-Dmaj-Cmaj, followed by Fmaj-Fmaj-Fmaj, then an EbMaj, however the proper progression is Fmaj x 3, then Gmaj x1, before going to the BbMaj.
