Mark Appel still got to do what almost every boy who plays baseball has dreamed of. Play in front of a 40,000 sold out crowd for at least a minute. You are the center of attention for a few minutes as you finally get to play in a major league baseball game. Sure his career didn't last long, but he got to live it for every second it lasted. he got his first ever mlb strikeout as well so thats an accomplishment in its own right.

No idea why he would say that Appel was the biggest bust ever, given the 3 picks that never made the bigs....and I lived thru it, the hype around Appel was weak compared to that around Brien Taylor, that would be my pick for biggest bust of the 1st overall's(although I don't remember when Chilcott was drafted, so can't compare)

I’m glad that Mark Appel didn’t sign with the Pirates and he was a bust for another team lol. I was mad about that at the time but then when I thought about it, I said what God doesn’t want to be in the major leagues immediately if he’s really that good answer that should’ve been the first red flag and then I wondered about the Pirates process for even drafting him.

I loved Frasiers bat and bat speed as a Yankees fan. The problem is anytime he heated up he got hurt and then when he came back he either got hurt again or just couldn't catch fly balls. It was ALWAYS something with him, and then all of his nonsense off the field where he couldn't shut the fuck up to the media. He did have and still does have a ton of talent but I'm certain the time has passed for him. His bat speed was insane. He could catch up to fastballs up in the zone when most guys would be late at that point. Sad story all around.

I don't think Bickford should count as a near-bust, he got picked out of HS, he had some time in the bigs, and is still playing, that's more then you can say for the vast majority of picks, bad overall draft or not.

    • @AndThatsBaseball

imagine if the astros who do a fine job drafting and developing players drafted kris bryant instead of mark appel the astros would have been a dynasty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when mark appel came out of stanford he had 4 PLUS PITCHES in his repertoire !!!!!! most young pitchers have 2 at most !!!!!!!!! he was sooooo good they could already put him in the hall of fame !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i do not think appel had much adversity to deal with and i think he literally WAS TRYING TO STRIKE EVRYBODY OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the mistake was bringing him up to double too quickly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice organized video presentation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! about the kris bryant 492 foot homerun: i drove to wrigley field overnight from new york where i live and i remember THAT HOME RUN KB hit off ruby de la rosa ( who had even greater expectations than mark appel) !!!!!!!! that homer in the 5th inning was the first cubs hit in the game!!!!! eventually we would score more runs and arizona did get a couple of 9th inning runs but the cubs prevailed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nice world series highlights of 2016 !!!!!! i have no complaints !!!!!!!!

The funny thing with the 2013 draft was that it was terrible in any of the Big 4 American Sports. The 2013 NFL draft is one of the worst in recent memory, the 2013 NBA draft would probably be considered the worst if 2000 didn't exist, and even the NHL draft was very bad

He was so much better than every one else . He looked like a man playing with boys . He was humble n nice . Sucks it didn’t work out for him in the league . Just shows how crazy good mlb players are . Good thing is he got paid with that contract
