You missed the part where Newfield hit .307 with an .862 OPS with Milwaukee in 1996. Overall that season he was pretty good & had 410 plate appearances. He hit .278/.332/.446 (.778 OPS) with 26 doubles, 12 home runs & 57 RBI. Solid production. You just glossed over it like it never happened saying he was bad in Milwaukee.
Another Mets pitching bust from the 90's - Kirk Presley drafted by Mets @ #8 overall in '93. Was lights out in highschool but never made it past high A in 5 years in Mets system. Retired in '98 after multiple arm surgeries.

As a Giants fan(me too), I am surprised you didn't mention Joe Fontenot, number 16 overall to the Giants in 1995, the Giants dumped him after 3 seasons in the minors, traded him to the Marlins, where he got promoted to the show he won 0 and lost 7 with 6.33 ERA in 1998. The thing as Giants fan the really sucks about him is that he went one pick ahead of future hall of famer Roy Halladay. Doc could have been a Giant.

I think Brien Taylor and Ryan Anderson are the two biggest what ifs of the 90s.. Ryan Anderson was supposed to be the next Randy Johnson but injuries ruined his career just like Taylor
I actually get kinda sad thinking about the freak injury Brien Taylor suffered.
He was the best pitching prospect ever.. His mechanics were smooth like butter.. I have no doubts he would have had an HOF career
Most of these busts were pitchers, just shows how hard it is to draft a quality pitcher!

Sometimes there's the developmental issues as well. Remember there's a reason there was a trend where struggling prospects got better after being traded from the Orioles for over the past decade. It wasn't just Arrieta.

I remember being in elementary school and driving up to see Brien Taylor pitch in Albany with my father and older brother. Still have his autograph after all these years. Shame he got hurt and couldn’t recover.
Man that Todd Van Poppel guy looks awesome, he along with Brien Taylor, Paul Wilson and Darren Dreifort will dominate the league for years to come!

Todd Van Poppel was one of the greatest players in Atlanta Braves history. In 1990 Van Poppel was considered one of the best pitchers/players in the entire draft and holding the top pick the Atlanta Braves wanted to draft him #1 overall. Van Poppel got wind of this and as the Braves were the worst team in baseball at the time he decided he did not want to play for them. He blasted the Braves in the media and said he would "never sign with that organization" if they drafted him. So the Atlanta Braves begrudgingly "settled" for a younger less proven highschool player out of Florida with the #1 overall pick. That player was Chipper Jones. The very next year the Braves went from worst to first and that kicked off a still all-time sports record streak of 14 consecutive division titles won by the team Van Poppel thought would be so horrible that he refused to play for them. Braves Country thanks you Todd Van Poppel. They couldn't have done it without you.

Taylor was such a bust his autographs are still kind of expensive because he’s known for being the first card craze rookie to bust like that
I hadn't considered Darren Dreifort to be a bust, probably because the one year I paid attention to him, twenty hundred, was the only one in which he had a W-L record over .500 as a full-year starter. But he still had an ERA above 4.00.
I am old fashioned and can make neither heads nor tails of such stats ad ERA+, FIP, and WHIP for pitchers. I just look at W-L % (or sometimes just wins) and ERA.

Billy Wallace is from my hometown in south Alabama. He had all the talent just let the lifestyle get the better of him. He had a rough patch but seemingly has turned his life around and is doing much better these days.

I had Todd Van Poppel’s gold Leaf rookie card. I also had Brian Taylor’s Topps Stadium Club rookie card. Man, 10 year old me just KNEW these guys were gonna be hall of famers.

I had just started collecting again (After my mom threw out all my baseball cards when I went to college in '86) and I stocked up on Brian Taylor cards. I had a bunch of the Topps Gold cards of him which was a promotional set of cards by winning scratch offs. At the time his rookie card was worth $30. Now maybe it's $.03
You knew what TOPPS and Beckett told you They didn't have the coverage they have now you knew nothing about them guys
I remember collecting these rookie cards. Even traded 2 UD Griffey rookies for the Topps Taylor autograph. Yup. Those were the days.

This was an era when I had some of theirs’ baseball cards AND MANY OF THEM STUNK!!!!
You could've put Matt Smith a pitcher out of Grants Pass, Oregon who went 18th in his draft I think. Anyhow, he never made it to the majors but he did end up playing high quality football at LB for the Oregon Ducks.
Baseball is a hard game to master. This really puts it into perspective of guys like Bryce Harper so young and confident and ready to play MLB out of high school and is aiming for the Hall of Fame.
They're all confident when they're 18.
He was fully grown as a 14 year old sports continue to overlook late bloomers who may have ended up better
@user-kx6vk3nj9u Harper had that confidence well before he was 18. Dropped out of HS to get his GED and play for a junior college cause he was too good for HS competition. That's not confidence, he knew he was built different.
As a Brewers fan Brooks Kieschnick was a good dude and he was exciting in an era of nothing for the club. I'm glad he is doing well post baseball.

In 1992 the Reds had a SS named Barry Larkin. 3 years later Larkin would be MVP. Larkin became a HOFer. Where would Jeter play in Cincinnati?
A different position where his excellent hitting could make its full contribution while his mediocre fielding would do less damage.
Probably third base which is where he should’ve been after A-rod got traded to the Yankees.

Corey Myers was the real deal when I watched him play in high school. He turned a new school into an instant powerhouse, with 81 RBIs while also scoring 70 runs in the same season. Even though the competition is more diluted with more schools and games, he still has some records 25 years after the fact. Trouble is, he was a big fish in a really small pond.
I went to school with Corey and his brother in Casa Grande, AZ. I was always rooting for them to make it to the Bigs. It's a tough business and sometimes some luck is involved to get to the top.

As a lifelong Royals fan, you could write a book about KC's busts from this decade. Granger and Austin were huge letdowns, as were fellow pitchers Dan Reichert, Kyle Snyder, Jason Pruitt and Sherard Clinkscales. But they drafted two big kids named Matt Smith and Juan Lebron who were perhaps bigger busts--neither made it beyond Double-A. Lebron was supposed to be the next Juan Gonzalez. They took him with their first pick, then some kid you might have heard of named Carlos Beltran with their second selection.

I haven't had time to watch all the way through yet, but your guy at #15 reminded me that one year in the 1990s, and I see it was 1992, both the Reds and the Phillies drafted guys named Chad (and I think both had the same last initial of M) in the first round. Neither made an impact at the MLB level. At least the Reds guy made some big league appearances. The Phillies guy suffered a gruesome knee injury at AA Reading, cutting his career short.
If you mentioned the Phillies guy later in this video, I'll catch it later. He was the only Phillies 1990s first rounder to never play a major league game, I think.

I actually feel bad for guys who ended up being considered “busts”, as long as they didn’t do it to themselves by either doing illegal things, or by having an attitude like JD Drew (as a Phillies fan, that guy is the biggest scumbag joke). Technically, if you were good enough to get drafted it’s hard to be considered a bust, you were good enough to make it that far and that’s very rare. And yes having a career in the minors might be difficult to some. I can imagine the traveling, fast food, and being away from home, all the time would stink. But at the same time you’re playing a game you love, against some of the best in the world, and you’re getting paid to do it. That’s a dream for so many others…

With the exception of the guys who got arrested, there are only success stories here. Owning businesses, serving as coaches, and working for Google and J. P. Morgan - that’s a better life than facing rotator cuff injuries.

3:42 Believe it or not I actually have this photo signed by all three. I picked it up years ago with just Bill and Paul on it for a nominal amount and ironically the most successful player Isringhausen was the last person to sign it for me. I actually got Jason to inscribe it "Gen K" one of my favorite items in my collection because of the nostalgia of these 3 guys being the next big deal for the Mets.

Getting on board the Wayback Train, I'll never forget the feckless Pittsburgh Pirates (my team!) paying the there-to-fore HIGHEST BONUS BABY bribe in history for a rookie sign-on named Bob Bailey. The hype had Bailey as the second coming of Honus Wagner, Roberto Clemente, Pie Traynor, Ralph Kiner ... and well, all that sort of thing. Third baseman Bailey managed to stay in the majors for seventeen years, retiring with a .257 BA and an anemic 189 homers. He was almost a Doctor Strange glove in the field. The Buccos palmed him off to LA Dodgers after a dismal four years, sending Bailey off on his dull-as-lead journeyman career. Bonus Baby, indeed.
Speaking of Taylor, the guy was a waste of talent who could have been great. What made the situation worse was that his brother was the one who started the fight to begin with.

In the 1999 draft, both the Diamondbacks and the Phillies drafted guys named Myers (probably no relation to each other) in the 1st round. Unlike 1992, when neither the Phillies' first rounder and a similarly-named Reds' first rounder had a major league impact, the Phillies' 1999 Myers guy, Brett, had a decent MLB career, including being part of their 2008 World Series winners.
Twice in the late 2000s or early 2010s, the first rounders of the White Sox and the Rays had the same last name, Beckham one year and Sale the other. The Rays' Josh Sale was definitely a draft bust, being suspended by MLB or the team for most of his minor league career and never getting close to the majors. The Sox's Chris Sale has had some very good years with both Sox teams and is now with the Braves. Tim Beckham, first overall by the Rays, took a long time to make the majors The White Sox's Gordon Beckham made it to the majors faster (he was a college player, I think, while Tim was from the high school ranks) and stuck around the majors for several years. But both baseball Beckhams were dwarfed in popularity by stars named Beckham in other sports - David in soccer and Odell Jr. in the NFL.

So when the Mets acquired Goetz they did themselves a solid and avoidable the horrible contracts of Vernon Wells and JD Drew, got it.

Always nice to see the Royals on these lists. They have drafted some real turds and I have a feeling in 20 years you will be doing a list that will include Blake Mitchell.
High school players are almost always a crapshoot, as I've experienced with my Marlins and Tyler Kolek with the 2nd overall pick in 2014. But yeah, OPSing .600 in rookie ball and striking out 26.9% of the time is not a good sign...
It's crazy to think that the Yankees' dynasty team of the 1990s would have been even better with Taylor had he not blown it.
Being a Yanks fan I remember the hoopla surrounded Taylor. Franchise was bottoming out at the time and drafting him came at a perfect time. So we thought. Oh well
Kept waiting and waiting but no Todd van Poppel is a huge miss on this list. Telling an MLB team that you refuse to play for them and them drafting one of the best 3B of all-time instead seems like the definition of bust. Especially considering how little impact TVP had at the MLB level.

Chad Motolla was a good hitter although he was bad defensively which wouldn't have been a problem if he'd been in the American League (courtesy of the DH), but he was never in the American League. Chad Motolla was more commonly known as Chad Motorola though

In 1997 the Mariners drafted Ryan Anderson with the 19th overall selection. He said he was going to be better than Randy Johnson. Anderson was also 6'10" and was coined the little unit. A total bust. Anderson's opinion of himself and lack of respect for Randy Johnson ticked off Mariners fans.
Only the Mariners could find a high school pitcher who played in a 1ball/1strike high school league 😂

Sounds like the story of how Gerry Priddy disrespected Joe Gordon which didn't exactly help endear him towards the veteran Yankees players. People at the time were expecting him and Rizzuto to become one of the greatest infield tandem for years to come, only Rizzuto worked out for the Yankees.
Unlike Anderson, at least Priddy did find some success as a player after being traded by the Yankees though his life after his playing days went downhill...
The Mariners trade for Randy Johnson (player to be named later) would have been better than Babe Ruth had the Mariners believed his neck was fine and signed him to a long term deal. Instead he went to Arizona and threw some more no hitters and got a few Cy Young awards and went into the HOF as a Diamondback.
Randy started the trend of pitching out of the pen when they needed a closer for a playoff spot or a playoff win. He would pitch on a day or two rest if the managers let him. @@iamhungey12345

Dude, I love how you used a clip with The Crime Dog Fred Mcgriff in it. I always loved Fred's swing. I knew things were about to get special for us Braves fans when on the day that we (Braves)got Fred and he was about to play his first game with his new team and the dang stadium caught fire lol. But the best part was later than night The Crime Dog Fred Mcgriff played his first game with the Braves in a stadium that just caught fire and had just been put out. It was a miracle they played that night. So Fred's first day had already been exciting, so what does he do? Yep, he hits a frigging bomb to right center. It was frigging awesome. What a day.
Baseball more so than football and basketball is a lot more difficult to scout talent. Sometimes you dont know until they play in the show. Long season and big leauge pitchers

Brien Taylor(from all accounts I’ve heard or read)was a good kid,but did something 90% of 20 year olds do,go to a bar and get in a fight.He ended up being slammed on his shoulder,which destroyed his ability to be dominant.Yeah,I guess he was a bust,but mainly because of a dumb decision and a terrible injury.

i think the problem for a lot of these so called busts is that they rushed themselves a lot of them either left college early or didn't even go to college who knows maybe if they had gone to college and were able to fine tune their games they might have succeeded in the majors but i guess we will never know

The Mets were going to have the best rotation in baseball, Wilson, Isringhausen and Pulsipher…….same with the Cubs, Wood, Prior and Zambrano. Who would have ever guess Zambrano would be the one who had the best career?

Like 1995 which has Erstad, K Wood, Helton, Geoff Jenkins, Doc Holliday, and Mark Redman as the only notable players and 1996 might be even more underwhelming with Travis Lee, Mark Kotsay, Eric Chavez, Jake Westbrook, RA Dickey, and Jason Marquis as the highlights

Honestly though, you could do a top 10 on Expos Pitchers that didn't reach their potential but had the, 'Future Star' or 'Number one draft pick' on their baseball cards.
In hindsight and being a bit wiser, I know all teams had their fair share of busts but when you're a little kid or tween, you listen and believe the hype.
I'd still Love to be bitching and moaning about other new busts but I can't.
Having a player go bust is one thing but having your entire team go South, Both Literally and Figuratively....that crap is just Like having a Longtime, Loved Wife, cheating on you and request a divorce!
It's a stab in the chest, that you see from a mile away but can't do anything to stop it.

Chad Mottola was a front office can’t miss……there were several scouts that had Jeter over him.
Who knows how he could have panned out. Nobody ever gave him a real chance to adjust to the majors.

In all fairness had the Reds drafted Derek Jeter instead of Chad Mattola in the 1992 amateur draft Derek would have opted to go play baseball at the University of Michigan instead of playing for the Reds
