It’s Jose’s fault. Cocaine was found in his body while he was driving the boat and he’s the one who overturned the boat. If he survived, he would’ve been charged with vehicular manslaughter. His death was tragic and unnecessary, but he wasn’t as innocent as people think.

RIP Tyler Skaggs, Yordano Ventura, Jose Fernandez, Oscar Tevaras.
Sadly, this is just the most recent names on the list of active MLB players that have died. Since the year 2000 there's been 13 players, the 4 named above, as well as:
    - Greg Halman 24 year old outfielder Mariners 2011
    - Nick Adenhart 22 year old pitcher Angels 2009
    - Josh Hancock 29 year old pitcher Cardinals 2007
    - Joe Kennedy 28 year old pitcher Blue Jays 2007
    - Cory Lidle 34 year old pitcher Yankees 2006
    - Steve Bechler 23 year old pitcher Orioles 2003
    - Dernell Stenson 25 year old outfielder Reds 2003
    - Mike Darr 25 year old outfielder Padres 2002
    - Darryl Kile 34 year old pitcher Cardinals 2002
The decades of the 1970's and 80's also had a combined 13 deaths. But other than that, you gotta go back to like the turn of the century, when there was multiple players dying every year from things typhoid fever and tuberculosis, to find comparable numbers of active players dying in a similar timeframe. And unlike the previous instances, all but 2 of the guys from the recent group were under 30 years old, and more than half were 25 years old or younger. In such a short period of time so much young talent gone, and often for reasons that were completely preventable. It's tragic. It's been a few years since an active player died, hopefully that keeps up for a long time to come.
RIP to all the guys i mentioned or even alluded to.

    • @bmac4
      @bmac4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

To the point of combined deaths in those eras, keep in mind team rosters are larger than they used to be, there's more use of platoon guys and roster management, and there were 24 teams in 1970 and 26 in 1989. From 1970-1989 about 2700 MLB players debuted (per baseball reference), while the time from 2000 to 2023 was around 5000 players debuting, nearly doubling that amount. There's just more guys for it all to happen to.
Also keep in mind for the 70s and 80s...a lot of guys were doing a lot of hard drugs. Drug usage is still common, but they absolutely characterized the early-to-mid 80s in baseball.

I think it was a tough call. $120 mil was A LOT for Wheeler at that point. I can't blame the Mets for passing, and I get why the Phils took the chance. He's still kind of a frustrating pitcher. Dude has elite stuff, but rarely pitches like an elite pitcher. He's a more than solid #2, so that's good. But he'll always have a "what could have been" vibe about him. He spells his name Zack, by the way ... not Zach. As a Mets fan, I wish him well. Except when facing the Mets.

Oscar Taveras' death set the Cardinals back a few years in terms of talent. He was likely going to be the next Pujols in terms of hype and all. It's a shame that one reckless decision, for each of Skaggs, Fernandez, Taveras and Ventura, cost each of them their lives (though out of the 4, Ventura's may have only been weather related. Evidently, a toxicology report occurred, but the results were never disclosed to the public.)

Cole will stroll into the HOF. I have no doubt. He still has 6 years of play left just on this contract and this is his age 32 season. Based off what we've seen from the elite power pitchers of his talent level in recent years, I would expect 3-4/6 of these years to still be prime or near prime level. That means 250 Ks annually, at most a 3.30ish ERA (though I expect several sub 3 years if the HR luck can stabilize some and he can get a real SS behind him), and 200+ IP. He already is right around 2000 Ks. He should pretty confidently get to 3000 Ks and playing for the Yankees plus pitching deep into games, he can probably average around 15 wins per year for next 3-4 years and then 8-10, putting him in a reasonable spot to get 200 career wins. Those type of stats make his HOF chances a pretty strong lock.

This is one aspect I wish was touched on a little more in his breakdown with the Padres, at least as his tenure was coming to an end. He became beloved in SD for how he interacted with the fans and community in a time where we had guys with zero hype, or guys like Hosmer who didn't even try. And by the time we got all of the big names last season, everyone I knew saw him as a guy they wanted to win it all for-someone who tried his heart and soul out, 100% of the time, every time he stepped on the field for us. Knowing he would most likely be gone after last season was hard, and it still hurt more than I expected when the news he signed with the Reds actually was announced. Love him, hope he does well, hope he comes back as unrealistic as it is.
EDIT: I also want to say I love Profar too for his last three seasons in SD and hope he finds a spot on our roster this season if signed nowhere else.

The part that bothers me is the one with Tyler Skaggs, addicts are not treated that way ever, especially if they overdose and die, I wish more people treated addicts like humans but they just don’t, and because he was a successful baseball player it seemed like more people cared, I just want that same kind of love and compassion for the people struggling at home that have no help, or have no one behind them to push them thru, or the resources that a mlb player would get..

I often find "electric" to be a tremendously overused word, but it's precisely what I'd use to describe Jose Fernandez. When he had the ball, you knew you were witnessing someone special and there was absolutely no doubt about it.
