Hi! I am a pediatric dietitian- if babies are wanting to feed more frequently than every 2 hours that might be indicating that he is not getting enough breast milk at each feed which is why he may be waking up more frequently for feedings. Also, typically we recommend to limit feeding times to 30 minutes max to help the baby preserve energy and not burn more energy than they are taking in. You can try only breastfeeding on one breast at each feed to make sure that he gets the fattier milk that comes towards the end of the breastfeed or you can offer a supplemental bottle of breast milk after breastfeeding. But I would highly recommend seeing a lactations consult or dietitian to help you guys get on a more sustainable schedule so you and baby can get some well deserved rest :)

@ it is not :) every baby is of course different which is why I recommend her to seek out a professional that can individualize a plan for her because I cannot comment or come up with an individualized plan from just a TH-cam video but this is general normal baby feeding

My sister had a similar experience and was convinced her baby wasn’t getting enough. She called an at-home lactation consultant that weighed the baby before and after a feed and, sure enough, baby was getting enough milk. It was so helpful for calming her fears!

Feeding doesn’t always equate to being hungry. There is also non nutritive feeding where babies suckle for comfort, closeness, etc. nursing doesn’t have to be clinical. Mothers should vibe of their babies on demand needs unless they are personally concerned about something.

Hot tip from a mom of 3 who’s been nursing for almost 5 years… it’s so easy to get out when you learn how to feed your baby in the baby carrier! I nurse my baby walking around target all the time lol and a travel boppy pillow is my favorite, I bring it everywhere

I had my daughter when I was 16. I feel like (and she basically has) been there my whole life. Now she’s 27, planning her wedding, my baby boy is 20 and a junior in college…..I wish I could go back to the early 2000s and do it all again. The sleepless nights, the potty training, the homework and birthday parties. I miss it all.
Guess I just have to wait for grand babies!
Enjoy every second! Do what you think is best as a Mama! And don’t sweat the small stuff! 💙💙💙

When he’s 3-4 months old you’ll suddenly realize that breastfeeding becomes easier and shorter too! There’s still regressions, and teething etc. But right now he (and you) are learning. It’s hard and feels non stop but one day it will become much easier. Also, your let down is normal to feel strongly early on. As your milk regulates itself you may not even feel the letdown occur and that’s fine. You also may pump much less - that’s no indication of what he gets. It just means your body figured out what it needs to produce and it usually won’t be as noticeable anymore.

Hi Clancy. I know you get lots of unsolicited advice, but someone recommended the book “On becoming baby wise” when I had my first child who was also a very hungry boy. It changed my life and subsequently for the next 3 babies as well. I typically started once my babies were around 6-8 weeks and started to take longer naps on their own. The basic idea is stretching out their feedings vs cluster feedings. By stretching out their feedings, they get more of a “meal” vs a snack, which leads them to being full longer, and allows you to plan around their feeding times. This also helped them all sleep through the night at very early ages. It worked for me for four babies. It changed my life with the first baby. Game changer. ❤

I won’t ever stop being SHOCKED for American healthcare system. So, the economy depends on women having babies and at the same time you have to pay $15K USD for giving birth! 👀 like, even in my third world country giving birth is free, and 3+ months paid maternity leave. Anyways, I admire you so much Clancy 🥰

I think she said $1400 which honestly would be lower than I thought! Must have good insurance. Basically if you have state insurance you typically don’t pay anything for child birth.

My son was the exact same way. I thought I was gonna die. I asked my doctor for advice since every book I read had a different way of dealing with it. Here is what he said: “Your baby is using you as a pacifier. Feed him on once side for twenty minutes or so, then burp. Do not feed him again for another two hours no matter how mad he gets. Then after two hours, feed him from the opposite breast.” He was right. As a young Inexperienced new mom, I thought that every time he cried I had to whip out my boob. As soon as I was done with one feeding, I had maybe 15 minutes to a half hour before he started screaming again! Eventually if you feed him this way, as he gets older, you can start to space out his feedings a little more. Just a suggestion!

Hi Clancy, I've been watching you for years now. I'm a mom of 2 boys, 7 & 4. I am truly enjoying watching your journey into motherhood. Thank you for sharing the raw honest moments, and best of luck with your breastfeeding journey. It was quite an emotional journey for me too. Be sure to check for lip and tongue ties with the constant cluster feeding and any weight loss, if they haven't done this already. I'm not trying to alarm you at all, that's an easy fix if that is the problem, but it could also be that he's just a slow feeder/hungry growing boy. Give yourself plenty of grace, you are doing so good!

I used to always take a walk, through my kids being like 6 or 7, at sunset. It helped ME feel calmer and better as we headed into the "scaries" and then it also reset their little minds. As babies I felt like they fussed less, as toddlers they got some wiggles out, and as they have gotten older we still do it but now it's just fun - we catch up on each other's days or books we are reading.

Clancy you're doing such a fab job!! Just one tip from one mum to another (my son is 11 months old) - try to master the laying down breastfeed so you can do this at night in bed when you're feeling extra exhausted. It's safer to do this if you accidentally do fall asleep than try and sit upright and feed. It was a total gamechanger for me!!

You'll get used to getting out. It's like every new job, we all learn the job with experience doing it. You usually can't stay home with subsequent babies. I nursed and pumped with twins having 4 older kids with busy schedules of school, activities, sports, etc. and a toddler who was only 11 months old when the twins were born. Not running around wasn't an option but you figure it out by doing it. With some health conditions, like severe chronic migraines for me, you are doctor-ordered strong coffee every day while pregnant and nursing. Because we have to stop preventative meds, caffeine constricts blood vessels, reducing migraines (which are cause by over-dilation of blood vessels), reducing need for treatment meds. Usually you only have one nurse the majority of labor and delivery, and my husband held a leg while I pushed every time. He definitely had the easier job.

I’m sure you and Decker will both become experts at breastfeeding, and you’ll eventually be able to nurse him in the car/wherever you need to go. You will learn how to make it work! When I first brought my daughter home, I also had to have a certain pillow set up to feed her. (I used the my Brest Friend Pillow) But, just the other day I was in a situation where I literally had to just feed her standing up in a family bathroom. 😂 Not ideal obviously, but we got the job done 😂

One thing that I did when I was breast-feeding. Is that at the night feeding? I would mix half-and-half of my breastmilk with formula and that did seem to help her sleep for a longer period of time. I’m not sure if it’s a consistency issue or what but it did seem to help. Every baby is different though so but it’s worth a shot. ❤

You should try feeding on one side and pump the other. Then go to the library or store while someone watches decker. It's like ripping off a bandaid. Your mom brain makes it impossible! Small warning; as soon as you leave decker you will feel guilty/worried he needs you. He doesn't. He will survive a couple hours without, but your milk coming in will make you run home. I would come in the door demanding the baby so I could feed. It is quite uncomfortable.

I used to put a tiny bit of rice cereal in the bottle breast milk for the night feeding and it did help them sleep a little longer

Heads up on the 2 month shots, we got 3 plus an oral vaccine and go ahead and expect little man to be pretty fussy and sleepy. They’re not fun but they get to feeling better quickly. Just wanted to give you a heads up just in case

That’s not bad for your hospital bill. I think my brother and sister in law paid 10x that for their first.

Bills for healthcare always seem so foreign to me. Yes I’m in Canada where all healthcare is free (aka paid for for everyone through taxes). But getting a bill for normal events or even emergencies make me so sad. I’m glad you were able to afford the bill. My friend just moved to the U.S. and had an accident - they had to choose between whether they could afford to save one finger or both. This has nothing to do with politics, I just wish every human could received care when they needed it without worrying whether it would bankrupt them.

Tbh, I honestly think you’re normal for not getting out yet. I think everyone thought I was the crazy one for going to Costco when my tiny queen was 5 days old. Or that I went to go get my nails done without her when she was a week old. Or that we even went out to a restaurant on our anniversary after her pediatrician appointment at 12 days old. Or that I took her out by myself to a cafe an hour away, at 17 dates old.

40 minutes isn't a normal feeding session. especially since you mentioned he had more weight loss than what is expected after delivery, maybe he isn't getting enough each feed. Lactation consultants helped me tremendously!

It can be normal for newborns..Not every baby is the same. My son would nurse that long in the beginning and he was gaining weight like crazy.

I remember the first 6 weeks after my daughter was born. I barely went anywhere. She was born at the end of November. Her birthday is actually in a few days. So I was so worried about her getting sick. I was also lucky I lived with my grandma as the time, so if I needed to go somewhere, she would take her for me so I didn’t have to take her out.
My husband would tell you that the after birth was more traumatizing than the actual birth. He watched the whole thing. And he said all the blood and the placenta of the after birth was by far worse than the actual birth. 😂
