Jo, this was so well articulated! I loved this book and you had amazing points. I truthfully didn’t find it funny at all but did connect to it in a lot ways maybe that’s why. Maybe I’m just not remembering the dry, dark sense of humor I know is somewhat present in the book, but what stands out in my memory is the hardships Jeanette went through. It’s heavy! If anything the humor that’s present is self-deprecating. Trauma humor. It makes the hurt hurt a little less. Which I do get as someone who had a trauma filled childhood. I’ve joked about things I’ve been through and toxic family members even though it’s not actually funny. I loved the Drew Barrymore interview by the way because I know Drew has a complicated relationship with her mother as well.

I read a great question in the book "Wrong Place, Wrong Time": "But isn't humour a different kind of repression?" Humor is important, can be a life saving coping mechanism, but it can also be used as an avoidance technique. I can totally understand that it's easier to make fun of things than to really have to feel the tragedy of what is going on. But the tragedy needs to be adressed and felt as well to properly heal.

From my point of view: the most shocking thing was that the other grown ups in this story have been a total failure. Her mom obviously had several personality disorders and mental health issues, furthermore she had a brain tumor later in life. Knowing all this, her behaviour is still unbelievingly hurtful and shocking but the logic consequence of her illnesses. Why the father, grandparents, boyfriends, grown-up coworkers in the movie industry etc. never really helped Jennette or stood up against the mother is really unbelievable. It was child abuse by a sick person who had limitless power because of the weak or indifferent grown ups surrounding her. There will always be people like Jennettes mother, the question is: how does society stands up against these kind of people and protects vulnerable people/children from them. So from my opinion Jennettes story is just not about a sick mother but about societys failure in protecting children.
100%! Unfortunately this happens too often. We don’t call when we hear domestic violence, teachers can only do so much when they see students hurting, and people think it’s “not our business” when there’s clear abuse. It’s sucks that institutions set in place to prevent child harm fail us so much too (like that doc one the Trial of Gabriel Fernandez 😔). Thanks for sharing your POV! 🤍

I was on the fence about reading this but now I’m interested, especially about your thoughts on the humor. I wonder where I’ll fall..I can see in the instances where humor could be found in the absurdity of the situation. I’ll have to read it to find out.

I was always intrigued by this book , even knowing that maybe some pages could be triggering (not because of my mother but for my childhood I would say) for me

This is probably the most “authentic” of her press videos I’ve seen and they talk about the way that the humor in the book is mostly centered around her being young and naïve. I really want to read this book! I am interested in what her experience was like being part of the Mormon church.
That surprised me tbh! I had no idea she was a part of the Mormon church. And it plays a long role in her life
@@xo_jo I’ve read some info about her and the church , but idk how much she goes into it in the book. As someone who’s family was Mormon and has left the church. I just find stories like this interesting.
Jennette mentioned in interviews how she did want there to be humor in the book. Although what she went through was in no way funny, she didn't want the tone of the book to be to heavy.
Totally! The interview she did with Drew Barrymore and on the Good for You Podcast shed a bunch of light on her humor in life and in this book.
