The Truth Behind Your Reading Slump: Exposing Book Community Pressures & Goodreads Goals 📚💫

  • Reading slumps have been on my mind this week as I slowly realized I'm experiencing a much needed break. But I did notice the book community goes HARD when you can't seem to pick up and finish a book. Why?
I really encourage you to rest if your mind and body are calling for it, and to make sure you still have joy in your hobbies! There's plenty in life to worry about without adding stress. :)
    Enjoy!

I've been enjoying not caring about a reading goal this year. I've given time to other things and it's great.

Oh dear god I am so happy you mentioned the "click bait" issue! Im not a goals/stats person, so I haven't had that pressure. BUT I have ONE MILLION PERCENT felt like Im not good enough for booktube because I don't read 30 books a month. I've gotten better where I maybe read 5 books a month, but sometimes that even feels to much, but as a content creator you feel obligated to continuously read....which then makes me not want to do it.
I feel like that is a common issue for book content creators, because our hobby becomes a "job", it can become tiring and you crave something different to do. Something that has nothing to do with books.
    Also.....love the edit girl

Hahaha yeah! Things we notice now as content creators- I had to include it. Not reading enough is an honest fear for booktubers tbh so I dont blame you at all. And 5 books a month is still a lot!
      Thanks girlfriend! 😘

This is so encouraging! As much as I love the book community it does sometimes feel like it has this standard you have to meet to be apart of it. As someone who’s always loved reading but has never been more than 30 books a year, I’ve never felt like an avid reader because so many people read more than me and faster than me. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies and just because my numbers are not as high as others shouldn’t make me less of a reader! I love stories and the way they make me feel so even if I read 1 book a year, that doesn’t make me less of a reader than anyone else. Loved this video ❤

Oh your comment makes me so happy! I'm so glad you came across this video and felt encouraged. 30 books is honestly SO MANY. But no matter the number, you ARE a reader. Thank you for taking the time to comment lovely! 🥰

100% agree! Especially with what you said about a reading slump being an indicator that you need to take a break. I made a similar video at the beginning of the year talking about my gripes with the goodreads reading challenge!
I’m also team I have other hobbies so I can’t read 8 million books a month 🙃 but I love watching channels that combine their hobbies with books! The video you made with your coach is a perfect example

Yeah, I haven’t read so much in 2024 yet because I’m in my final semester of college before I graduate with my Bachelor’s degree. So, I’ve been more focused on that and have only been able to read about 1-3 books per month while juggling homework, classes, my job, and other social stuff. I’m excited to get back into reading once I graduate in May because I genuinely miss reading it’s just I’ve been so busy. But I don’t feel shame about it, I’m a busy woman!

    • @xo_jo
      @xo_jo  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

i personally like to set goals for myself because a goal for the end of the year inspires me to keep reading all year round. my current goal is 50 books at the end of the year but im also a semi fast reader. but i also have a friend who recently got back into reading and she is pretty slow (having not read aside for school in years + dyslexia) and when she compared my read books to her (31 vs 5) i just told her that an average person in our country reads 5 books a year. so at this point of the year she has already passed the average person and i think some other people might need to hear this as well. an average person will not read 20 or even 10 books a year and the fact that youre reading at all is already fantastic ^^ so if you just read a page a day, its already a page more than if you hadnt. and if you dont find joy from reading taking a break and reflecting on yourself and why it isnt fun anymore is actually more helpful than trying to brute force yourself through a slump in my opinion
this ended up being longer than i expected but i hope everyone understands what im saying haha :]

Some people really like stats and numbers, I.. am not this person 😂 Also the pressure to read all the hyped up books too, I think that takes the enjoyment out of reading. I have so many other interests too, I cant imagine reading being the only interest I have. Comparison too, can suck. I agree, book slumps are normal, sometimes your brain just needs a break. This was very informative Joanna 💗

Moving definitely made me realize that I personally over consume (especially books). Having a kindle has helped me with this but I think you're right, when I first wanted to participate in booktube/etc I thought I wasn't going to be able to "read enough" and that I was too slow of a reader haha this video reminds me that some of this is very niche like you said and isn't necessary!

I try to remember that for a lot of booktubers their literal job is to read books and make content around books. They are basically out of a job if they aren’t reading constantly. For most people reading is just a hobby so we can’t spend all day reading and can’t be buying a bunch of books because we have something else for a job or we are a student. Hope this helps you have a better perspective and not feel so inadequate because you aren’t. Just having an interest in reading and reading some books each year is fantastic!
