    1. Consume media in English
    2. Normal Speed + subtitles ( focus on what they are talking about ) - 3 - 4 hrs every single day - move on after udnerstanding videos without subtitles
    3. Watch media without subtitles - after watching a video or episode try to explain to yourself what you’ve just watched in English without translating
    into other languages
    4. Start to read in English - after reading an article try to explain / summarize in your own words / english
    5. Speed up videos to 1.25 / 1.5 -
    6. Do it for a year ( think in English )

    Hi Ruri,
Native English speaker here. Wanted to tell you that your grammar is actually very good in English. You make some mistakes but remember language is a communication tool. If you don’t have perfect grammar but still sound fluid and can be understood then you’re fluent.
Also, like any language, lots of native English speakers make grammar mistakes frequently; and not on purpose.
Late comment but hope you see this and give yourself more credit. 👍

    • @jaye7679
      @jaye7679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

Indeed. There were about 10 or so mistakes in pronunciation and grammar, but I can understand it perfectly, so it is good enough :)

    • @sasino

I too recommend studying grammar as the last step. Learning how the grammar is constructed is actually a very complicated task and it kills motivation. I watched this video out of curiosity, and I found myself agreeing with her study path, and I belive that's the only efficient way to learn languages. Focus on consuming tons of content first, then let your brain do the rest. I'm currently studying Chinese as my 4th language.

    in brief:
In this video, Judy, a first-year medical student from Turkey, shares her experience of learning English by herself without studying it.
She discusses her background, method, and the pros and cons of her technique. Here is a summary of the main points:
    1. Background: Judy learned basic English (A2 level) in elementary and middle school, but she didn't improve her language skills in high school due to focusing on German.
    2. Method: Judy's method involves watching and listening to content in English, using subtitles initially and then removing them.
She also recommends speaking to oneself in English, reading in English, and making English a part of one's daily life.
    3. Pros: Judy's method is fun, cost-effective, and can lead to fluency in English.
    4. Cons: This method may not work for complete beginners, those with academic English requirements, or those who want to improve their grammar.
    It is also not evidence-based.
    5. Upcoming content: Judy plans to upload a series of evidence-based language learning tips from a polyglot, as well as study with me videos and other content on various topics.

And I add the grammar too, so they can be really good in English. That's how I learned and became fluent too. And you're totally right, you cannot use these tips if you don't have any knowledge of the language. But it can be a start too. And don't worry, all of them are based in different methods and approaches.

As a native German speaker myself I found that English was rather easy to learn, I also learned most of what I know today through media consumption. I started my English learning journey at the age of 7 with the help of a dictionary and video games. Back then you had to understand English or you couldn't read the text at all, there also was no voice acting back then so you had to make sense of the letters. English had a "cool" appeal to me right from the start, it felt much more modern than my old fashioned mother tongue. That said, I was always surrounded by English words as most songs that were played in the radio were in English luckily. The grammar in English is much easier but also a bit different from German so I still manage to get it wrong in English sometimes, which will result in some odd looking sentences for a native speaker. Though I guess they are pretty much used to it as English is the language that most foreign people learn in school and use to communicate with someone that doesn't understand their mother tongue...

As a Turkish person from England, I can confidently say that your English accent is very good and you're so fluent. I feel that Turkish people who learn English through school / independently have a thick Turkish accent which is inevitable but you have been able to overcome this! Especially because the grammar in English is hard because it never follows a certain rule, it's sort of a free language where the rules keep changing.
Your advice in this video is very true because I started to consume Spanish media and listen to Spanish songs and although I can't speak it very well, I am able to understand most Spanish words when I didn't even do this on purpose.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Based on your advice, I started using the English subtitles (my native language) on the videos I am watching in other languages. It works very well. I have been watching without subtitles for a long time. Using the subtitles makes me aware of how many words I don't understand, and it helps me learn those words more quickly. Also, talking to yourself in the target language is very helpful. I do it all the time.

My method to learn english pretty quickly and speak like a native person :
    - Watching youtube videos or netflix shows in english with french (my native language) subtitles and then in english if I feel comfortable with it
    - Speaking with a lot of foreigners on discord servers : it helped me sooo much, especially for my pronunciation skills and my accent!
    - Consuming medias in english, it can be on social medias like twitter, instagram etc.
    - Speaking alone by my side (lmao sometimes I feel like schizophrenic but I do rlly enjoy speaking english alone, or reading articles of the New York Times for example on internet for fun, to test my pronunciation skills)
    - I also used to write on the app Notes, some new words/vocabulary
And that's it! Today I have the TOEIC (it's kinda like an international diploma that proves your level in english) with the C1 level. I'm currently trying to learn more about anglo-saxon expressions to rlly understand every conversations haha.
But I would just mention that not speaking like a native/speaking with your accent is totally okay and I think it's even cooler because it makes you special! When you interact with natives (or others) they can notice it and they're intrigued about it haha.
Good luck to anyone who's learning english or any other language!

I'd also like to recommend to study the grammar too if it's a language with a whole other alphabet. For example, Korean and Japanese have different alphabets and phrase structure than English, so If you want to speed up the process a bit try to study the grammar first, then use this method.

But I've heard some say that they don't learn grammar first, they don't learn grammar at all at the beginning, they become fluent first and then think about the grammar.

That just sounds like you're trying to put her down TBH. Like somehow she cheated because she already had a very basic level. Most people can reach A2 within a couple of months if they put in a few hours/day, so there's little difference. And BTW, one can _definitely_ learn the 'natural' way without studying the basics first. Those basics just make the initial stages of jumping into _real_ content a little more comfortable.

You won't learn any except for "no" and "yes". Even in your first language your parents teach you. People like you are annoying because they always act like something offends or puts someone down. But yet nothing that I said wasn't true. Grow up and stop acting like everyone has to talk like you and beat around the bush.

You definitely can do it without learning the basics: you start with something aimed at preschoolers, and you simply try to follow what's being said (ideally with the help of a visual aid) using subs (if it's aTV show) and looking up words. Just because you haven't done it, it doesn't mean it can't be done. There are LOTS of people who've done it.
