I did come from the XT4 as well and went with the XS20. Really impressed by it's form factor and video capabilities. Not a super spec camera but it has everything I need for my type of filmmaking.

Before the XS20 the last Fuji I had was the XT3. I had a ton of lenses but I hated the camera for no IBIS and poor grip and poor battery life. I didn't think I would dislike this issues so much when I first bought it. Anyway, the XS20 is now one of my favorite cameras. Panasonic held that position for quit a while but I am in love with the XS20. Feels very comfortable and the battery life is one of the best of any camera that I've ever used. My pinky dangles a little so I night the small rig cage and blue it's even better. I give this camera a solid 8.5/10.

It's really a great camera, especially considering the price. Paired with the Sigma 18-50 or a prime of your favorite focal length, it's really hard to beat, dollar for dollar.

Don't forget about the flog2 profile that has a dual gain iso that kicks in at iso 3200 and cleans the image making it possible to film great filmic look at iso 5000 and retain lots of details in the shadows to pull down in post plus the internal 4.2.2 10bit compared to the xt4 4.2.0
Having an external recorder like the Atmos ninja or bmassit monitor would allow to record prores raw 12bit 4.2.2 or blackmagic raw 4.2.2 12bit
No recording limit internally like the xt4
In general it's a major upgrade in the video department and can be used professionally if rigged
The grain coming from that sensor is a dream and you can dampen the sharp look with unique lenses or using filters like the promist
Slap a variable ND on that bad boy and you really use that log
Main gripes are less buttons on the body
    No dual card slot
    Micro HDMI
In rest the thing is a beast

That's a nice, straightforward look at the differences. My X-S20 arrives tomorrow and will replace my H1. I have ambivalent feelings about it, but from everything I'm seeing the difference in performance will lesson the sting of letting go the H1. I think Fuji has a big hit on their hands with the S20!

Good to see the camera side by side with an x-t4. I am currently trying to decide whether to do the same and trade my x-t4, based on the lower weight and larger grip of the x-s20. I find the x-t4 isn’t heavy however it feels heavier for me because of the small grip. I don’t hand carry for that reason but use a strap whereas you can use a wrist strap with an x-t30 for example. Glad you like it, it looks a great camera.

Was looking at the X-H2 for my X-T4 replacement, then realized the read-out of the 40mp sensor is slower than the X-S20, resulting in more rolling shutter for vids. + the X-S20 is smaller/lighter/cheaper.

The XS20's viewfinder is so little that I've got the xh2 instead, I couldn't cope with it as it was quite difficult to assess exposure in video mode, which is critical. The XS10/20 has a better grip and fewer pixels is better. So the view finder was the critical point to opt it out, this and the price; I paid a couple of weeks ago exactly the same price for a used in mint condition XH2 than what a new XS20 would have set me back and it has a few more controls and buttons, and a digital zoom for video!

  • @georgelpons

After using Lumix bridge cameras for several years, five years ago I bought an X-E3, along with the 18-55mm, lens primarily for fitting onto a telescope. I began to use the camera more often as was surprised with how good it was. In the Autumn I bought the 70-300mm lens, when combined with the X-E3 it is a light and powerful combination. Even though I don't do much video, I thought that doing video on the X-E3 was cumbersome with no dedicated button the on camera. On looking through the Fujifilm camera range, I thought that the X-S10 would be a good replacement for the X-E3.
When the X-T5 was launched I predicted that the X-S20 would be released and followed Fuji Rumors for news of upcoming cameras. I bought the X-S20 at the end of June and have used it with the 70-300mm lens and 1.4X TC. The body is a bit heavier than I was expecting, but it just feels right in the hand. It is the best camera that I have every used. On photographing birds in the close where I live, the bird tracking was very good and it even worked on a butterfly.
I kept the X-E3 and it allows two cameras to be used with the X-E3 with the 18-55mm and the X-S20 with the 70-300 + 1.4 TC. This is to reduce the probability of getting dust on the sensor.

    • @mikelzsigler

I really wanted an X-E but by the time I got into Fuji cameras they were impossible to find.
I have the Sigma 18-50 and like it. How is the 70-300? My daughter is getting close to 7 and I feel like I'm gonna need a long zoom for soccer/cheerleading/basketball whatever she's into.

    • @catherinegrimes2308
      @catherinegrimes2308 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@mikelzsigler I became interested in the 70-300mm lens when a friend told me that he had bought a zoom lens for his Canon camera and on arriving home I did some web searching to see what Fujifilm had to offer. One of my hobbies is astronomy and was unsure what lens to take to use when photographing the 2024 total eclipse in Texas. I looked on Fujifilm's website and after seeing some reviews, found that the 70-300mm and 100-400mm would be suitable for my needs. Mathieu Gasquet's TH-cam videos inspired me have a go at using a long zoom lens for wildlife photography.
In the camera shop there was a new 70-300mm lens and a used 100-400mm with the later costing a bit more than the 70-300mm. On picking the 100-400mm lens up it didn't seem to be too heavy, but on putting in on the X-E3, I realised that it would be too heavy use for extended periods so I bought the 70--300mm lens. I live about a mile from countryside park that has a wildlife reserve and I can walk there, wander around looking for animals and come back without noticing the weight. From that perspective it is very good. In addition, it isn't very long when set to 70mm and I was able to put in a backpack along with the X-E3 in its camera bag and a pair of binoculars. Because of the maximum aperture of f/5.6 at 300mm, I find that for wildlife photography it is better to use it on sunny days and they are quite rare when living in the UK. It is cloudy now but it could be sunny tomorrow, so I am planning on taking it out then.
On a rare sunny day last week, I managed to get some nice images of a butterfly using that lens along with the 1.4X TC. The only problem was having the wrong aperture set and this reduced the depth of field so only one antennae was in focus, but I did have it on the bird photography settings of f/8, a shutter speed of around 1/1000 and auto ISO. The bird tracking setting on the X-S20 was very good with focusing on the eye of the butterfly.
I have used it for photographing birds and it works a lot better with the X-S20 because of the bird tracking mode, I have found it to be really good. Apart from photographing them in my close, I haven't done very much with it with the X-S20 but being lightweight it is easy to swing the lens around and point it at the bird without noticing with weight. I would imagine that photographing birds would be the closet thing that I do that would be comparable to photographing children playing sports.
A friend went on a birdwatching holiday and used the Sigma 150-600 F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens, he had problems with the weight and in an email he wrote "I have mixed results for wildlife largely on account of the lens being heavy and therefore quite difficult to swing into action". Having a small and compact lens has its benefits.
Using it for astrophotography has not been as successful, because of the longer focal length and maximum aperture of f/5.6 at 300mm, focusing on Jupiter has been problematic and as it is cloudy I don't get much time to practice doing it. The main problem as been using it with the X-E3 that has a non-linear manual focusing that is speed dependent, it seems to be a lot better when using linear focusing on the X-S20. Having said that, I have had some nice handheld photographs of the Moon when using the X-E3. Last week I managed to photograph the crescent Moon that was just above the horizon, it wasn't that clear because of the atmospheric distortion, but it was nice all the same. I live about 60m above sea level and there is a lot of murky atmosphere where I live that limits the quality of astronomical photographs.
It is a lightweight compact useable lens that is very capable and I am very pleased that I bought it. One downside is that it doesn't have a tripod collar, however iShoot make one for the 70-300mm lens, it is the same one that they make for the 55-200mm lens.

I bought the X-S20 yesterday :) but I can't say I'm super impressed with the video AF on the X-S20, I'm looking at the Sony A6700 as well. The Fuji has 6.2k open gate, 2 more stops of IBIS, better webcam with film sims, no overheating in video, better battery, better screen, joystick, fuji colours, some unique great lenses - so that's a lot to love! - but if you're not in focus, what's the point?

I like that Sony have bulletproof autofocus no matter what, making it so easy for filming myself, focus breathing correction (those F2 Fuji primes have terrible focus breathing!), 120fps 4k is cool, water resistance, higher ISO range (better in low light?), the same lenses are normally 20-30% cheaper for Sony. I'm very torn if to keep the X-S20 or to get the Sony! - Any thoughts?

The little girl running around looked pretty good to me. Was It Sony good? Maybe not. But, I looks really close to me. As far was the F2s for video. They weren’t really designed for video. But, I use the 35 F2 for video and I don’t see any issues. You can get most of the same third party lenses for Fuji as you do for Sony. Sony has nothing for sports in an APSC lens. So, you would have to move up to a Full frame lens. More glass you don’t need and lots more money that a Fuji. But, this is a hood problem to have. The competition has got so good it’s hard to decide on a camera. I would like one of each. But, my wife says no.😀

I think the XT5 is probably the better camera if you only care about photography. The XS-20 has tons of video features that the XT-5 lacks, though, such as Open gate 6.2k video.
As far as the XS-20 vs the A6700, they're pretty comparable. I like Fuji's colors, the Sony has better AF and tracking, though Fuji is KINDA starting to catch up a little. Hi, great video. I went from X-T4 to X-S20 myself. One question -have you encountered any firmware bugs in custom modes on your X-S20? I have a strange experience with them. The C1 and C2 are set for photo presets in my case while C3 and C4 custom modes are set for video presets with different resolutions and frame rates. The control is all manual of course -- no aperture/SS/ISO priorities. The front dial is set to changing SS. Here's the thing -- when i set the mode dial to C3 or C4 and then switch the camera on, everything works fine. But if the camera is set to C1 and is switched on, when I turn the dial from C1 to C3 or C4, then the SS number is automatically set to the same number as the mode fps (twice lower then it should be) and the front dial that should change the SS stops working -- no matter how I turn it, the SS remains the same. If I mingle in the menu and then return in shooting mode, the front SS dial starts working again, but if I switch between C-presets, the problem returns -- turns out the SS automaticall sets to AUTO.. I thought it was a bug and updated to the latest 1.11 firmware, but the problem remains. So it got me thinking -- maybe it's not a bug, but I am missing some crucial settings that is buried somewhere in the menu. Min SS in movie mode perhaps. Have you encountered something like that?

it might have something to do with the "Video optimized controls" setting, that does something similar, but I don't know why it's behaving the way it is, I don't think it's supposed to do that.

@@mikelzsigler thanks for the answer. It has nothing to do with video optimized control, because this is the first thing I switched off - this option was sometimes useful on X-T bodies with their dials, but is completely useless on X-S20. I added SS control in quick menu to at least see what is wrong with the shutter. If I switch the preset wheel between any modes and come back to C3 and C4 that are reserved to movies, the SS control icon in Q menu shows “auto”. If I “move” from this auto position, the SS dial starts working again. Also, if i switch off the camera, put it in C3 mode and switch on again the shutter does not go in auto - everything works fine. So I consider this a bug or some kind of hardware problem. Any chance you can test this on your camera?

@@mikelzsigler Thanks in advance - very appreciate it. Get well soon! Also, if the problem can be replicated on your camera, we might have discovered a hole with Fuji software. So the idea is to program at least 2 of the C-modes - one of them should be reserved for video, preferably with all manual control and the front dial set to SS-control. The other C-mode… i guess it doesn’t matter what you set it to. The issue pops when you switch between C-modes and land on one reserved for video. The camera should be switched on camera.

@@mikelzsigler Hey there! I hope you are feeling better. About that shutter speed -- I figured it out. It appears that in logic of Fuji engineers custom modes must import some settings from the main modes. So my C3 and C4 that are set to video always look up to the Main video mode (the one with the video camera icon on the dial) and take some settings from there regardless of what settings I make for them particularly. I didn't bother to set my Main video mode so it was factory set to full auto. And it turned out that the C3 and C4 somehow imported the auto SS settings from there. Once I set Main video mode to full manual, the SS in custom modes started to work correctly. What is puzzling -- why does this problem concern only SS? Diaphragm an ISO work fine -- they appear to be detached from Main video mode settings. I guess nobody at Fujifilm just didn't think about this system quirk. Generally I am happy with switching to XS20 from an XT4, but it appears that in regards of software Fujifilm treats the XS line like "yeah, it kinda exists -- let's code something for it during coffee break'.

If you’re going to spend that kind of money for the dial, weight and faster autofocus, why not buy a sony from the a series? Cheaper, lighter and even better autofocus and not to forget the dial.

No no. Don't make a video on that. Just be happy. If you can, shoot.

I was mostly making the video for people who were trying to decide between the two. Also, since the X-S20 was a cheaper camera new, it cost me next to nothing after selling the XT4. I also pointed out that it's only worth it if you prefer the controls and need the video features. The XT4 is a great camera and if it works for you, just keep it. $1200 buys a lot of lenses or trips or whatever else you want.
