  • In today’s episode I will review the Sengled Smart Window and Door Sensor. This sensor works out of the box with SmartThings, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The Sengled door sensors are directly compatible with SmartThings without the need for a custom device handler.
    The sensors use the ZigBee protocol. Devices using the ZigBee protocol are very easy to install. The protocol supports a large number of nodes and it is also power efficient, which results in longer battery life.
    The sensor receives its power from a single CR1632 battery, and the sensor is rated for 12 to 24 months of operation, depending on the level of activity in your home.
    The sensors are unobtrusive, being smaller then most other contact sensors. They measure .89 inches wide by 1.93 inches high. The sensors are also economical. I purchased the two pack option at a cost of about $15 per sensor.

    Great video. This reminds me of a "how-to" something from the 90's!

    Hi Bud thank you for the video. do the door sensors work with echo direct without the smarthings hubs. Do you know which sensors work directly with Echo 4th gen.

      According to Amazon the Sengled Zigbee Door and Window sensors are compatible with Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, Echo 4th, Echo Plus, Echo Show 10, Wink, Hubitat, Apple HomeKit, Sir

    Correction for Alexa. When trying to pair it directly to Alexa, it works if you choose the "Other" category at the bottom of the list. (Of course you need an Echo 4th gen with zigbee) . The reaction time is still very slow when opening/closing.

    Do you ever have issues with Zigby devices falling off the network? For the last few years I’ve only been buying Z wave devices because of this issue although I do still have some original Zigby‘s that continue to work well. But for me if a door sensor stops working because it fell off the net work, that’s a big problem and it usually continues to happen with that device, in my experience.

      Hey Remy. Thanks for your question. I recommend that you try repairing your Z-Wave Network with the utility available in the SmartThings App. Find it by watching my video here: th-cam.com/video/mv1yqujYADc/w-d-xo.html Start at the 7:00 minute mark. For more details about how the the Z-Wave repair utility works watch my video here: th-cam.com/video/1dA9fKUEzgo/w-d-xo.html

    I'm having trouble finding door contact sensors that I compared directly to Alexa and her zigbee hub. The only one I found is ecolink but they seem to be very slow and the magnets too strong. Are there any others that you know of?

    • @BudsSmartHome

      Hi Casey. Thanks for your question.
      Let me start by saying that you really should invest in a SmartThings capable smart hub like the Aeotec Hub: amzn.to/3EWsXYn You will find that as you try to expand your home you'll begin to see slower response times because you will overwhelm your wireless network. You will also limit your choices on the number of compatible smart devices you can reliably add to your home and you will limit your ability to have these devices work together in your automations.
      The Aeotec Hub will enable your many devices to work together locally, so that you are not relying in the internet, (the cloud) to execute your commands. This means faster and more reliable response times.
      As for your question, Third Reality makes a inexpensive contact sensor that works great with Zigbee capable Echo Devices such as Echo (4th Gen), Echo Plus (1st Gen and 2nd Gen), Echo Show 10 (2nd Gen and 3rd Gen), Echo Studio. It is currently on sale for only $14.99 Here is a link: amzn.to/3EAHF69
      Hope this helps? 😀

      A ZigBee Hub is required. The Amazon site states that the sensor is compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings, Echo 4th, Echo Show 10, Echo Plus

    I've several of these over a year paired with smartthings. They continually fall offline. I think they're going to into a deepsleep cycle or something. But if not used maybe every 12 hours they fall offline and don't "wake up" until they open or close. But they don't send that signal back to the hub. I have to open the door, close it again, then open it to get them to trigger the light routine. Completely useless a trigger for a light within a room when opening the door. Anyone else had this issue?

    • @BudsSmartHome
      @BudsSmartHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had someone else post a similar comment. I have not experienced that issue.

      Have this same issue. Sengled has no phone support and email support not responding (over 1 week now). Going to return all my open close Sengled sensors. Do not purchase if you are planning to connect directly to Smarthings. These go offline after 1 day and are then useless until opened next time. You will not receive an OPEN alert. Only a close alert. This is a huge security and design flaw.

    When I did exactly like you, it never went out of the setup process, but it was showing in the app when I restarted it (ST APP) ! Weird. Never could setup on Alexa directly ! Range is poor. Even Wyze sensors which were the worst I had so far, do better than this one. Althought, very limited functions. Overall, I am not impressed by this sensor.

    Hi Bud. Any idea as to why these sensors often (almost onca a day) get offline fron st hub ?

    • @BudsSmartHome
      @BudsSmartHome  ปีที่แล้ว

      What is happening is that the sensor goes to deep sleep after a certain period of inactivity and does not ping/poll status until it detects some activity. And the controller, SmartThings, thinks that the sensor is no longer online.
      Are using the Driver: 'Zigbee Contact' from the SmartThings Drivers (Beta) Channel?

    • @philipperostin
      @philipperostin ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BudsSmartHome yes thats the driver I use. And on top of it I have a zb third reality motion sensor not even 4 feet from it, thus I expect zb meshing.
