Oh I am learning so much about the American psyche through these old B&W Movies. Nothing seems to change, just to complicate.

83% Americans have Englands psyche but the rest come in all shapes and sizes and psyches and Hollywood collected them all

Sheila Terry was contracted with Warner Bros.; Monogram managed to get her loaned for Phil Rosen.
She was only 23 when she co-starred in The Sphinx, and got to work with a few rising stars of the era,
such as John Wayne in 3 of his pre-code westerns: Haunted Gold (1932); 'Neath the Arizona Skies and
The Lawless Frontier (both released in 1934). But, although she could've gone far, Sheila didn't.
Her final role was in I Demand Payment (1938); and the year before it was released, Terry had decided
to retire from acting, in part because of the death of her husband. She was unable to find any more
    work after that.
Born on March 5th, 1910 -- as Kay Clark -- she committed suicide in January 19th, 1957; less than two
months before she would've turned 46.

I didn't realize until I looked up the cast credits that "Werner" was Paul Fix, who played the town marshal on THE RIFLEMAN tv series. And this is the third US film from the 1930s that I've watched on YT in the past six months that had the same piece of deadly jewelry!

I understand that actors in these programmers weren't as obsessed with preparing for a role and truly getting into character as say, Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull but Lionel doesn't even TRY to fake hand signing. At least pretend and look like you know what you're doing instead of looking like you're clueless and miscast.

    • @stevenhamilton5342
      @stevenhamilton5342 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I take back what I just said.
He DID just try faking hand signing and he looked even MORE clueless and miscast.
He signs like he's never even HEARD of signing, let alone SEEN it before.
I know it's just a cheap programmer, but I would think the actor would prepare a LITTLE for the role.
This was the laziest performance I've ever seen. Even Bernie in Weekend with Bernie gave a livelier performance.
They might as well have used a mannequin.

Lionel Atwill had SERIOUS presence! I could almost see Mads Mikkelsen playing him in a movie of Atwill's sex scandal. It's no consolation, but Atwill could have been a SERIOUS horror force in the '40s and '50s!

classic murder plot with no cursing is wonderful for "young viewers" we're in post code era where strippers like in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and 'The Wiz' get a G rating. drinking and smoking? that's G rating every time obviously. and on screen violence including blade and gun murders get a PG rating.
no cursing so we're good. 😂

I finally figured out why I loved this movie, NO FUCKIN MUSIC IN YOUR FACE. So many movies are ruined cause of a thousand violins. Like in that movie with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins where his Indian wife got shot by a stray bullet during the other failed war against alcohol.

The smart-aleck newspaper men in these old films are insufferable. I wonder what sociological role they played for audiences then. This is another one that should be thrown into the bay and taken out with the tide.
