Greetings! Today we compare Edifier S2000 Pro, highest model available from Edifier, with my favourite speaker available for under 300 dollars per pair, JBL LSR305. Edifier is significanlty more expensive (twice as expensive in some places) than JBL is, so it is going to be interesting to hear which one is giving better value for money.
Starting as usual with build quality and features, this is the category where Edifier destroys JBL completly. S2000 Pro is not only much better looking and more premium feeling, but also has a complete host of features (remote control, Bluetooth connectivity, digital inputs, etc.) that JBL is missing. Those features will be useful especially for those that want to use Edifier as a TV speaker. Another important thing to mention here is that Edifier has significantly less hiss coming from the tweeters which is great. Clear win for Edifier here.
Soundwise the roles turn around, and they do more than I expected. Right off the bat JBL sounds clearer and more forward thanks to upper midrange and lower treble that is more forward and better balanced with the rest of the sound spectrum. Edifier has rather mellow and recessed upper midrange that is more pleasing to listen on longer listetnig sessions, but lacks a bit of "zing" at the same time (You can partially fix that that with the use tone controls and EQ settings if You wish). Edifier seem to be focused more on the lower midrange and upper bass, and the bass is where it really shines. S2000 Pro has some serious low bass extension with audible output below 40Hz and ability to play really loud. Unfortunately for Edifier there is also some port noise audible with bass heavy music at higher levels. JBL seem to be a bit tighter and less boosted in the upper ranges of bass, no port noise here as well. Treble is where I like Edifier a bit more, it sounds very smooth and airy, but without loosing any detail, JBL seem a bit less extended and a bit more grainy. They both throw very nice soundstage, but Edifier seem to be slightly more 3D in its presentation, but not by much.
Now is the time to sum this comparison up and I will say again that JBL is one of the best bargains on the market right now, is sounds excellent not only for mixing but for music enjoyment as well (that is how I use them anyway). Edifier can not quite match JBL in terms of sound quality, but it is very close behind, and for someone looking for stylish speaker either for desktop or for TV system it is a great choice IMO. In its own way Edifier is also very good value for money when You consider the build quality and the features You get with it. Good times!
What do You think? Which one sounds better in Your opinion? Let me know in the comments below! Cheers!

How do you think which speakers (S2000 Pro vs LSR305) are more comfortable for long session listening? I had some time ago LSR305 and they looks to me a little bit bright in my room without EQ. Wanna try S2000 Pro instead.

Edifier's were on sale today from Amazon at $319. Aside from the additional features and design, the both systems sound good enough for home studios. I'd say the edge is clearly with Edifier at today's price.

Never draw conclusions for sound quality from youtube compressed videos. I compared personally the two models and in my opinion the Edifiers are superior. The mids and highs are definitely richer and with more detail than the JBLs. The active monitors by JBL are excellent product, but the warm and darker sound of Edifier is superior and also leaves room for further optimization. The S2000 Pro shines also in terms of features like optical input, Bluetooth aptX and so on.

wow. The vocals on Long Drive ( 7:20 )sound really muffled on the Edifier compared to the JBL. Thing is, I just ordered the Edifier a couple of days ago! I was so impressed with the S880DB but wanted a bit more. I was (am) really impressed by the tweeters in the S880DB. but.. listening to that vocal track there with my headphones on, makes me wish I'd gone for the JBL :( I was swayed by the e.q. controls on the edifier though. Do you think with a little boost of the treble dial it could brighten and crisp up the vocals to sound more like the JBLs do?

What kind of microphone/recording equipment was used for this video. That can make a huge difference as many mics don't pick up every frequency evenly. That can make a fair comparison very difficult. Not knowing what was used to record this, I will say listening to this on my highly respected SVS Ultra bookshelf speakers paired with a Bowers & Wilkins 300W 10" sub with all EQ set at flat, the Edifier clearly wins in nearly every comparison and only ties in two genres AFAICT as the lack of mid clarity on the JBL pares with the too-smooth silkiness of the Edifier highs which should be a tad crisper. I'm not sure why everyone here likes the over-enhanced highs and lack of mid clarity of the JBL? There are other powered bookshelves out there to consider at this $399 level but if you ever heard a powered Dynaudio, you'd probably never settle for either of these.

Edifiers sound Muddy and JBL sounds clear. For studio monitoring i cant imagine hearing symbols very clear in those muddy mids. Edifiers sound like they are best suited for the book shelf. At 1:45 there is a trickle like synth going on and when the speaker switches over it gets lost.

  • @absinton

Did you used AUXILIARY RCA input for Edifier ? I suppose treble and bass trimmer where set on middle(neutral). On the remote control you set MONITOR mode ? I bought S2000 Pro, I confirm that it has a very pleasant low round bass. But I like also how the high frequencies sound like listening for ex radioswissjazz in aacp m3u. You can have the heights clarity of JBL 305 if you increase the treble trimmer . Volume of S2000 Pro is very loud for a 5m x 5m room. The entire experience is better than with R1700 BT that I also have.

fist of all - its very stupid to compare such thing by hearing videos on YT. But even if...
Used 2 headphones, Sennheiser HD-25ii and Sony MDR 1a on asus phoebus soundcard. Turned all equalizers, dolby etc "OFF" just clear input.
So my opinion compared to captured sound on YT vid...:
    High: JBL > Edifier
    Mid: Edifier > JBL
    Low: Edifier > JBL
The most important frequencies in this price class are mids, bass and high is easy to tune for regular music, but mids not. So I would prefer Edifier over JBL. On the other hand Edifier is more expensive.
And the question to Digital Stereophony: What would you choose? Coz you are here probably 1 person, who heared them both live :D

What do you guys think? JBL has been making speakers since 1946 and Edifier since 1998, This JBL speakers should steamroll the S2000Pro but it is not. To my ears, S2000pro is more neutral closer to audiophile speakers, JBL is suitable for pop and rock.

Most of the difference comes down to different setup, previous video was recorded in a different room, speakers where much closer together and the mic was closer to speakers as well. Hey guys i have seen you commenting on various digital stereophony videos ( of which i am fan of as well !! ) about edifier speakers and i wanted to ask some questions specifically for the S2000 Pro model if you dont mind since i saw that you have some experience with them. My main listening genre is hard/rock/extreme metal and i was wondering if you have tested theese speakers on lets say a a bit harsh low production recordings to see if they are any forgiving leaning on a Hi-Fi sound or if they shove it to your face leaning on a studio-monitor sound. Also i have heard that their bass can reach pretty low thus not needing a subwoofer but is it any punchy? meaning if you feel it on your chest etc . I am also planning to use them with a turntable ( project debut carbon ) but as far as digital goes i would be using them on my PC for multimedia purposes (gaming/movies/music ) so im kind of looking for a jack of all trades speakers , i dont expect any miracles just a decent sounding system with some bass to feel. I would be really grateful if you could find some time and tell me your opinion because im on the fence about buying them but i still have some doubts since i consider it a big investment ( for my budget ) . Another problem is that i currently live in a very small rat hole room like 10 square feet and i was wondering if that could have a big negative impact on the sound .Thanks !!

Hi again. I got my S2000 Pro today. They sound great. *BUT* Do you not find that they really have to be on Dynamic mode (same with the S880DB), and also have the treble dialled up to 3/4 ? The S880DB was lacking in bass. These are not lacking in bass at all. Bass stays at neutral. but I'm finding it hard not to both have the treble at 3'o'clock (so, +50% I guess), *and* also have the DSP on Dynamic. Otherwise vocals are just missing that crisp clarity/separation that makes them sensational. At least there's no JBL hiss I suppose :-) Try Tracy Chapman's song "Talking' bout a Revolution
    "

      @carlfarrington 6 ปีที่แล้ว

BTW, I am using a USB audio interface (old but trusty roland ua-25ex), and optical toslink/SPDIF to the Edifier speakers, so I have eliminated any dodgy sound card stuff I hope.

S2000Pro can sound a but mellow and polite in the upper ranges, but it is very close to neutral sound. When You come from speakers with hyped treble than You may find them too mellow, but give them some time and I am sure You will start to apreciate this sound signature more

    • @bloodbathory5624
      @bloodbathory5624 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi carl , excuse my interference but i wanted to ask you some questions since you have bought theese speakers yourself and i wanted to buy them since some time as well . So i have heard from other people that they are kind of dark sounding,(bear in mind i currently have the alesis elevate 5 which are as bad or even more as Digital Stereophony mentioned in his videos , quite dark as well ) , but with dynamic mode and 50% treble does that sonic darkness/muffleness go away ? Also is the bass coming from them any boomy or punchy , do you feel it? (im not expecting wonders from 5.5 inch woofers though ! ) . I was also wondering if you have tested any low production songs on them to check if they are any forgiving to that or their monitor character throws the low production to your face ( mainly refering to old Rock/Metal stuff but anyway ).Have you maybe tried them on general PC usage , or on a vinyl turntable? That would be all , i would be really grateful if you could give me any sort of answer as theese speakers are kinda expensive and im thinking about taking the risk , all im looking is a good all rounder speaker with decent performance , nothing too phenomenal. Thanks !!

Hi! Well, I have been away on holiday for a week, and still am. I only had 1 evening with the new speakers, and that was the evening I was supposed to be packing my suitcase. Priorities huh ;-) but.. I can say I was very very impressed with them. I often think nothing is better than good headphones, but, listening to music through those speakers (yes on dynamic DSP - but remember the Edifier DSP effects are very mild anyway, same as the S880DB), well listening through those speakers was sensational. I had them pointing at my ears pretty much though, on the large desk I have. The bass, and general fullness of the sound is quite remarkable. There's a lot more depth than the smaller speakers, and than headphones I think too. The headphones I have that I like, are known for exxagerating the bass, but I have always found them to sound good, definitely my favourite out of what I have tried (Sony MDRXB700), but these speakers gave such a better experience. So I am happy with them. One of the main reasons I have chosen Edifier powered speakers in the first place is because there is some EQ to allow you to adjust to taste, and a lot of monitors don't seem to have that. I wish the S2000 Pro had the USB input that the S880DB have though. Instead I had to use an old USB audio interface, which only really does 48KHz reliably (supposed to do 96KHz but sounds weird, and you have to switch in/out direction too), but, at least it removes the analog uncertainty on the PC side and, and driver FX stuff that the motherboard audio is loaded up with. I sometimes think they make it so that if you turn off all the Dell Audio MAXX_Bass, Maxx-Vocal, bass boost, (there's about 10 filters), then it sounds awful - i.e. rather than it being neutral, they have subtracted normal stuff so that it sounds better with their branded filter crap turned back on. Anyway it's hard to know if you can trust the audio to not be being meddled with on the PC driver, and too many controls at too many different junctions is just too much. Anyway, long story short, yes I'm happy with these speakers. Those JBLs sounded more like my cup of tea, but I would get upset about the hiss, plus they look cheap, have less inputs, no EQ, and maybe also no remote. Plus the S880DBs I previously bought happen to match my white living room carpet and TV cabinet.. so they have found use.

That Long Drive Song seems particularly revealing of their sound signatures. The Edifiers are noticeably warmer and less crystaline, while the JBLs have superior high frequency detail and sparkle. Overall, the JBLs have suprior clarity, at least to my ears listening through a pair of headphones tuned to be as neutral as practically possible.
I think one might be able to setup an excellent surround sound setup for their computer with 2 pairs of JBLs, a subwoofer with excellent sub bass and a surround sound USB sound card (e.g. ASUS Xonar U7 Mk 2) that can support high res audio.
I wonder if anyone has tried such a setup for real and if so, I would love to hear from them.

The Edifier S2000 has more tonal balance and neutrality, voices and mids more natural.. it's a more accurate "audio monitor" than JBL 305. But to just listen to music I personally would not pay the extra cost of Edifier: I could live quietly with the extra brightness of JBL, some recordings would even benefit from this as was the case with Les Toreadors.

The JBLs have more clarity in high frequencies, they have a crispier sound, but the Edifiers sound better on bass. But, tbh, they both seem to sound incorrect for monitoring. The JBLs have clearer highs but their clear highs also make them sound a bit too sibilant, compared to the Edifiers. While the Edifiers' highs are too muffled or too soft. Each of them have their own advantages, but personally, I wouldn't pick any of them if I wanted to make music.
The JBLs seem great for the price, though. Too bad they look like Batman's speakers.

Slight offtopic (cause i haven't found such comparison), just bought a pair of Edifier s2000 MKIII (to replace my Microlab Solo 6c - was too much bass and no clarity) and compared them to jbl 305.
Results are close to this video - JBL has more clarity in upper mid and sounds more pleasent to my taste, it's easier to listen on higher volume levels (less fatigue).
But Edifier has more powerful midbass and some highs seems to be more visible (possibly due to its tweeters). My verdict - JBL is better, but in some setups edifier is more convenient (less cords and Bluetooth) - using it for my Xiaomi Mijia Youth Edition Projector (which has no aptx, unfortunately).
P.S. Used Dynamic and Vocal Presets on Edifier, but it's not like EQ Presets in some Software players - not so aggressive.
P.P.S. Speaking of convenience, JBL (as studio speakers) has sound activation mode (always on/always sleep waiting for input signal to wake up).
This feature makes them good to use with some AI assisted speaker (like yandex station mini).

Yes, woofers do look similar, but Edifier has a woofer made out of aluminum while JBL has a woofer made of plastic..

its not true , people have other preferences. I love Edifiers Because they make speakers that is made of good wood while jbl is made from plastic .

Material of the cone does not automatically mean the driver itself is better or worse. Check out Harbeth 40.1, speaker regarded as one of the absolute bests, that uses plastic cones for the drivers

Edifier just destroys the JBL in bass test. If you want true monitor speakers while in studio, I’d want the front imaginary of the 2000pro. 👍🏼

1.) JBL makes those instrument sparkle and sound like instrument do IRL, Edifier sounded muffled there.
2.) JBL makes the soundstage bigger and more open, Edifier the sound stays a little more muffled and the soundstage stays isn't there.
3.) JBL show us a singer on stage with the band playing like it was great concert for a big singing star. Edifier never really thrills here either and it's clear that this comparrission is doing them no good.
4.) JBL show in the low end spectra a snappy and distinct bas thats belivable, Edifier comes out and show us it goes deeper in this low bas area but instead of the JBL snappy distinct bas the Edifier sadly gives us a boomy swampy sound, JBL makes my feet wanna stomp the floor Edifier newer gets me really going for it.
5.) I guess if you like to listen a lot to music you chose JBL, but i think if we would have seen Edifier doing some movie or gaming comparrission we could have seen that it probably goes louder with those kind of sounds and more oomp in explosions etc, don't think this speakers are tuned to the same kind of users and purposes, guess Edifier sounds good if you compare it against speakers tuned for the same purposes.
But because i'm in the group using speakers mostly to listen to music and many different kinds of music there are clearly the JBL I would chose any day, Edifier for me sounded like you put a blanket over them.
But I hope everyone choses whats best for them personally.

If Bluetooth is is your prio over sundquality then you chose those with that what pleases you, but for me only a small to take with me is the the one with bluetooth or headphones, with bluetooth then comes what version it has and how it affects the music with compression, and that some versions of bluetooth are more prone of loosing contact, it's like with headphones, if you want high res format wifi could be better but generally wired audio sounds better anyway, but for me this sized speakers that needs electricity anyway are more or less stationary so sound quality over mobility.

JBL has better quality in materials used and design. Edifier is a pure Chinese company from R&D to manufacturing.
