Wow Pitfall Harry in Mayan Adventure is actually an Atari sprite. That's really funny lol.

I had the Atari 5200 version, and it was great IMO. There was two endings, one was just like the 2600 version where you save Quickclaw to finish the game, but there was another way (can't remember what triggers it) where you do something else that creates a whole second game, with a different ending. Kind of like Castlevania SOTN. It blew my mind at the time.

11:00 Omg I love how they have kept Harry as an 8bit sprite, when I thought they would have surely updated his model to match his son xD that's funny!

Pitfall: The lost expedition/big adventure is one of my favorite games. I made a series on youtube just for that, and it was popular. I think (not sure) that I was the first one to complete a playthrough of pitfall the big adventure... Other people started it, but never finished it.

Pitfall: The Big Adventure is widescreen and can be played with the classic controller so it is ultimately is the best version. They should have advertised that it could be played with the classic controller though. I had it for years before knowing this.

It’s sad and ironic that JUMANJI turned into Discount Pitfall, which is so unfair when the iOS Pitfall game disappeared.

Hadn't even heard of the Sega arcade port before! I had to immediately pause the video and try the game out. I ended up playing a good half-hour and having a blast with it! After Namco, Sega is my fav arcade game company so naturally I got pretty worked up upon hearing about a game I hadn't played before, so cheers for that! The video was excellent overall too.

I'm not actually that big of a fan of The Mayan Adventure...mainly because it just felt like Aladdin meets Prince of Persia as opposed to Pitfall. It's a good enough game, but I wish it wouldn't have been a Pitfall game. I like the sheer simplicity of the original (although I don't like the mobile runners genre...so I doubt I'd like the simplicity of the phone game you showed). I had only recently learned about the original sequel and find it to be a true masterpiece...easily deserving of being considered the best Pitfall game...and in my opinion, the best game on the 2600 period.

The box art on the Wii Pitfall game is the stuff of nightmares. A knockoff Mii head with an elongated body, who thought that was a good idea?

    • @SemiJuggaloNumber2
      @SemiJuggaloNumber2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Seriously, they could have just used the original box art from the previous versions. Apparently, they didn't want to pay the original artist, so they hired someone to make some kiddie crap on the cheap. And what's worse, NOTHING about the artwork is appealing, it makes the game look like just another piece of Wii shovelware.

I was young enough to have gotten the SNES updated Pitfall as a birthday present, but old enough to know it was a remake. I ended up finding the Easter egg of the original game and ended up playing the Atari game on my SNES refiner then play the new version.

On a similar note: Lode Runner was another game I got on console in that era.... Both games were good, but the updated version of Lode Runner was better than Pitfall's updated version

the dpc chip has since been used in the homebrew community. stella's stocking (2006) mainly used it as a sound chip using an enhanced sound engine by supercat that supported 4 channels of amiga-quality sound, as did sty frosty 2, a sequel to one of the games in stella's stocking.

Each port of PitFall: The Mayan Adventure has it's strengths and weaknesses:
    - Mega Drive/Genesis: High resolution graphics (320x224) But lower colours (61 colours) and no CD Soundtrack
    - SNES: Distorted graphics (due to low resolution of 256x224) But with high colour (256 colours) but no CD Soundtrack
    - Mega CD/Sega CD: same as Mega Drive/Genesis but with amazing CD soundtrack
But the definitive version is the Windows 95/98 version that has ALL of the Strengths of the other ports: CD Sountrack, 320x240 resolution, 256 colours, AND save states :)
this version of The Mayan Adventure is not only the best in the series but is one of the best platformers I've ever played.

Food for thought: the Atari 2600, Commodore 64, and NES all used the MOS Technologies 6502 CPU. The 2600 didn't have much in graphical support like the other two and you'd spend like 75% of CPU's time drawing directly to the TIA-- hence the simpler graphics. Also the version of the 6502 used on the 2600 had the upper address lines cut to save money limiting the address space to 8k because ROMs were expensive and the cartridge had no write line because RAM prices were astronomical, so you had to deal with 128 bytes built into the TIA. Later designers like Crane got around this with clever bank switching in cartridge. Crane's chip actually did limited coprocessing (as I understand it) which made things like the 3 part harmony possible on Pitfall II.

Great video, although I will be pedantic and say that Super Pitfall wasn't developed by Activision, but rather a Japanese company! Also, you can play Pitfall The Big Adventure on the Wii with a GameCube controller and not have to use the motion controls. Provided you don't have one of the later models of Wii that lacks the GameCube ports, at least

Nice one, as always)) I was so surprised to find the variety that Pitfall 2 had to offer! And the first one is fun, especially when you play it FROM the Mayan Adventure!)) I also like the minigames inside of the mines and the over-the-top powerups like time stop at the waterfall and hot pepper for high jumps.. And you're right, the style is so very Genesis'y, especially all the jungle and rainforest stages)) They definitely benefit from having that "grittiness" to tgem, reminds me of Jurassic Park in that sense..
I remember playing the Genesis version along with mobile Java ports of xbox/ps2 games when they came out and those were quite good as well!! they had to split them into three settings (Jungle, Caves and Glacier) and they all had some neat gameplay differences and fine level design! Weren't as difficult as say Tomb Raider mobile games, but fun nonetheless)) I find myself coming back to those from time to time..)

Excellent overview of this great series Daniel! Though, I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't quickly make note of the differing computer releases. I had such fun with Pitfall II on the C64! That's just my own nostalgia crying out though, as the video flow really well as it is now :).
Hah, Pitfall 3D, back in the day when I heard Bruce Campbell was doing the voice, that was enough reason for me to get it. I was not disappointed, had quite a blast with it! Should check that out some time again, it's been forever since I popped that in.

    • @slopesgameroom
      @slopesgameroom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+HalfBlindGamer yeah i looked into all those different ports, i remember hearing a story how david sat at the end of the table and had a different guy either side of him making a port each of lost caverns for different systems.
1 guy used the original code and the other guy made it from scratch hence the huge difference.
I did wanna go into heavy detail about the extra bits added but sadly it got the chop as the lost caverns section was already getting quite hefty in length lol
Either way... You get all the points for knowing it in the 1st place :D

I didn't realized Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure had Pitfall Harry senior resembling his Atari 2600 design! Really shows how even back in the early 90s, games still had their share of nostalgia. I remember playing The Lost Expedition on the PS2, and dying a lot on the games many traps and crocodiles! Also, for some reason when I play The Mayan Adventure on a SNES emulator, I can't beat the first boss, yet I can beat him just fine on the Mega Drive VC port on Wii.

Just goes to show how a franchise can still live on even when it runs its course without it becoming oversaturated, people might like to bash PS1 for these 2d 3d hybrid titles based on 8-16 bit franchises but there actually decent games, almost reminds of Apocoloypse starring Bruce Willis (lot of good memories playing that one), the GBA once again showing how much of a underrated true successor to the SNES and has so many overlooked hidden gems (a unintended but nevertheless cheap plug for the series of videos from @MetalJesusRocks channel which I'd recommend), you're quality in production, audio, video and just evolution of your channel is wonderful to watch, great work as always Daniel, looking forward to all future Disney videos especially given how unfortunately Disney have taken a step back in game development at this time but have released some of their 16 bit games on Steam, wish it was on consoles especially given custom borders. 👍🏻

That was the version I played the most, and it had an entire 2nd adventure after you find all the objects in the first one. Instead of the niece, the mouse thing, the kangaroo or whatever that thing was, you had to search for a rope, a flute, a basket, and a guy to play the flute.

Normally when you finally collect that animal directly below where you start the game, it's over and you've finished the game. But in the Atari 5200, a blue door appears and Pitfall Harry runs through it, and it's an entirely new and different set of caverns to explore.

I still remember buying the original Pitfall! with my birthday money at Toys R Us with my aunt. heh I actually bought this one based purely on the box art and the advice of my aunt, since she thought it looked good. It was new, at the time, and I hadn't ever heard of it yet. Boy, do I have to still thank her, since it ended up being one of my favorite games for the system. :-) I later played Pitfall II, which blew me away, but that was on the Commodore 64. Such good games. The original is quite hard, though, since it requires so much memorization as to when you should go underground. Going underground was necessary to beating the game in under 20 minutes, since each underground screen equaled three above ground screens. Knowing when to go underground was key.

Dan you forgot the Pitfall mini game in Marvel Ultimate Alliance where a member of your team gets sucked into an arcade machine & you have to play a short Pitfall stage to save Jean Grey.

Super Pitfall on the NES included a reference to Pitfall 2, however when you go down the ladder you end up falling on a pit of spikes and dying at the start of the game.
AVGN said it best, may as well be a floor of lava with Sharks coming up to eat you and Volcanoes and Lazer Beems firing at all ends of the screen just to kill you.

Great vid Daniel. I must admit i stopped checking for Pitfall after The Mayan Adventure on the megadrive but i quite like the look of the ps1 game. Can't go wrong with Bruce Campbell.
It just occurred to me that the Uncharted series has that Pitfall influence, especially the first game. Maybe that would have been the direction David Crane would have gone with had his kickstarter campaign been successful.

DPC is not about adding 2k extra ROM. cart address space of 2600 is 4k. this is the rom size of most games for the system. earliest games were 2k, so obviously they looked worse. 8k(or more) roms required an “extra chip” for bankswitching and was present in quite a few later games from Atari, Activision and other companies. DPC is a device that allows more complex graphics to be drawn and more complex music, but the added capabilities turned out to be somewhat underwhelming, so it wasn’t released as a 32x-like pass-through device and was only used in a single game.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sega's arcade port of Pitfall 2, but the definitive version was the Atari 5200 one. The graphics are enhanced but not completely overhauled like in Sega's, and there's an entirely unique and awesome second quest that's exclusive to the 5200 version! It's arguably the best game ever released for the system. I recommend if you ever revisit Pitfall 2, make the effort to play the 5200 version.

Funny little sidenote, and I'm sorry is I'm repeating something that was already mentioned but didn't seem to be, but I'm the first marvel ultimate alliance on the arcade level there was a challenge one had to complete that I think you had to free two characters that were being held prisoner by arcade, Blade I seem to remember and someone else. But the challenge? Complete the first three or four screens of the classic version of pitfall. You get thru the screens and complete the challenge. Really cool.

  • @Neffers_UK

You could go left in the original 2600 version, and you can actually play it in Mayan adventures. For example, on the Megadrive, 32X and CD press down, then A 26 times on the title screen. For the SNES press A 6 times the hold select and press start. For the PC you head off into a secret area (this also works on the Megadrive version).
I preferred Keystone Kapers on the 2600 to Pitfall. Pitfall was excellent though, no doubts about that.
