I have an EVH Wolfgang Standard that I just disconnected the tone pot from lol it’s been over 3 years so I don’t ever if it really made a difference; plus I took out the Wolfgang pickups and put the Seymour Duncan ‘78s in there (Yes I had to force fit them by grinding away at the wood because the mounting legs on EVH are annoyingly round and SD are square…plus the pickup selector on an EVH Wolfgang is in a spot where you have to have patience to get to for soldering). Pretty much anything early Van Halen, no load or no tone pots work.
I have a no load pot in my tele and its very subtle. I have 250k pots with a .0022 tone cap. I use the no load for my neck pickup a lot. I love the .0022 cap because it gives me useable tone for 10-0. It almost starts to feel like a mids boost as I roll it way back (even though its not boosting anything)

I've also seen one where you talk about Capacitors, so.. my question is, will a 500k tone pot with a .047 capacitor circut be a really broad tone range of adjustment posible? Will if change tone from having different VOLUME pot? 250k vs 500k? Thanks in advance.

I'm considering putting it basically on everything, just awesome! If you have a dark guitar, wouldn't you just go with a 500k pot so you get more range before the bright 'jump' so it stands out less?
A couple of times you use the word pot when I think you mean cap (like 6:40). Other than that, excellent info. I use a Fender no-load pot as a blend pot in a vintage Broadcaster circuit and it makes a tremendous difference in brightness when I hit that detent. Just adds another tonal flavor if I need it. I wire in a very small cap in the "dark" tone switch position and use it to get a decent woman tone too. I can see where someone who likes to ride the tone knob wouldn't like it, but I like having precise, switchable tone options as opposed to the sweep of the knob.
So disconnecting my tone pot altogether will make a difference on my sound? Ive heard many different opinions on this but have always felt no tone pot was the way to go for me. I never use a tone pot n like guitars with just a pickup selector n one volume. Will disconnecting a tone pot on an active circuit make a difference??
I'm wondering if to go no load or TBX....i'm guessing the no load = better for letting all the potential top end coming through? I have a strat with Lace Sensors but the hotter and much darker Red/Silver/Blue and whilst not expecting miracles from these pups for the best sparkling clean tones (they're obviously aiming for fat dirty sounds) i just want to coax a bit more top end from these pups... Hmmm choices choices.
I'm glad you are making these videos about tone controls and capacitors. I bought a used Squier Strat for $60 and it has very little variation in tone. I bought a new set of ceramic pickups, controls and pickguard setup that was on sale from StewMac for about $39 and reinstalled them on the original pickguard, so it would fit without re-drilling the guitar, but the variation in tone hasn't improved much. Do I need more resistance in the pots (500k), and larger capacitors (0.047microFarad) on the tone controls to get a wider frequency range for my tone? Or should I be aiming for less resistance on the pots and smaller capacitors?
I am a layman, very uneducated to electronics. I bought a used Fender USA Nitro Satin Stratocaster. Supposedly no load tone pots unless the previous owner modded it. the upper tone knob goes to 10 just like any regular knob. The lower tone knob feels like it catches just above 9&3/4ths. it's got that catch. The other knob-the neck tone knob does not have that catch. Does this indicate that someone modded the knob and replaced the NO LOAD with a regular one??? Also, if I'm at 9&1/2 on the NO LOAD knob, is that the same as 10 on a regular tone pot??? Help!!!!! I have a serious question that you might know about active pickups EMG's. I put together this Fenderish style guitar with solderless wire set. Now the pickups are badass sounding in every position of the 5 way switch it came with. But the single coil bridge pickup to me is a little bright. So I lowered the pickup further from the strings to try to compensate to remove some of that brightness from it., otherwise I play in position 2, 3,4, and 5 of the switch. The problem with this set is there is no tone control for the bridge pickup the way they created this 50's style RA5 EMG Alnico 5 retro set. So my question is. Is there anything I can do to change this and make it so the bridge can have a tone control as well? This set has little circuit boards, so I am lost on this, or is this just stuck this way?

I'm a little confused sorry. Did you mean 47 nanofarads @ 8.35? Would 47 microfarads be a brighter sound? Thanks

No load tones are the best thing on the planet

2. humbuckers = 500k with .047 microfarads.

Heck! Is there a no-load Volume Pot?? That could work as a tiny booster...
No-load pots cannot possibly work properly when used as a voltage divider (i.e. volume). They work great in rheostats (i.e. tone), though.

I would like to know this as well. I'm thinking 1Mohm pots don't add much over 500kohm pots but I can't be sure.
