My father used to relax TVs, back when they had vacuum tubes and you could actually take off the back to service them! 😅
He called the soldering implement with the trigger, a "soldering gun," and the one that is just a simple stick shape, a "soldering pencil."
Dad is long gone, but I am happy to pass on a little bit of his knowledge to someone who may care.
    I love your channel!

Is Weller any good? My Weller pen style works fine for me.

This raises a question: Why is coil wrapped around the pole-pieces better than coil wrapped around plastic? Does it affect the tone?

Wht about using a magnetic tip screwdriver do u think it's strong enough to mess things up

For many years I've been lowering the gauze of my pickup magnets on brand new pickups. Why? I once owned a 1976 Stratocaster and a 1971 Telecaster (previously owned by the same person) and I absolutely loved the tone of those pickups. They had a very low resistance reading between 4.5 and 5.5 (depending on the pickup) and I also noticed the pole pieces had absolutely NO magnetic pull whatsoever. But their tone was so beautiful. I did many experiments trying to figure out how to get brand new pickups to lose the harsh top en spatkle. I choose low output pickups always. And then I de-gauze the magnets. I'm not going to say how because l don't want curious readers to ruin their pickups by trying this even though I've never ruined a pickup in over 20 years that I've been doing this. My pickups have a very old worn out tone like many old guitars from the 50s and 60s but without the microphonics usually associated with vintage pickups. The result is a warm sounding pickup with a slightly compressed attack and a very long and strong decaying sustain. Also noticed less 60 cycle hum.
Luthiers all tell me I'm crazy. You will probably tell me the same thinģ. I don't care. 😊 My Fenders sound the way I want them to sound without having to own a vintage guitar or vintage pickups.
I also don't use shielding but that's another story.

Thanks for the videos man. Love how you cover the basics AND the deep stuff. I'm working on an old gibson tarback. The wire is shorting right where it comes out of the epoxy(?). How do I get to part of the wire under the epoxy to attach new leads without using heat etc? Cheers man!!

So is ceramic magnets better in durability?

Great video, too bad my guitar guy that did my pickup swap used that same type of soldering iron then handed me my old pickups in a plastic bad. How can I verify that my pickups are still good or have been demagnetized? Keep up the great work as I am learning a lot from you👍🏼

I seen a guy use a soldering iron to move pole pieces on a single coil pickup by heating up the pole piece and the wax and pushing down he didn't keep the heat on for too long wht do u think about that

  • @Crazy_Dave
    @Crazy_Dave 8 ปีที่แล้ว

You're referring to instant heat solder irons, they can also get extremely hot. IMO not a good tool to use for anything other than heavy cable when you're in a hurry. Great video BTW.

@DylanTalksTone I'm trying to get something done that I can't seem to find anything on the web for. I have an HHH configuration and would like to install a switch to change all of them into Parallel. A two position switch with Series (std) / Parallel would do. How could I go about this?

  • @lumberlikwidator8863

I’ve installed scores of pickups with a Weller 100/140 Watt gun and I don’t think I’ve ever harmed one. I feel like I robbed a bank and they sent me a check for interest!
Guess it’s time for a proper soldering iron.

I purchased new pickups the other day and when I got them I took them out of the box and the neck and middle pickup magnets stuck together by accident will that effect the pickup?

ValueOfNothing the tone curcuit does a great job of that. What exactly are you looking to change?

@@DylanTalksTone I like low power pickups that are responsive and dynamic, and all around people are selling high power pickups
Tone controls? Those are all passive and subtract tone. I want to get rid of all my pots as well.

Well that sounds like a fun project, let us know how we can help. We have some great low output stuff

@@DylanTalksTone do you have something that has the same specifications as -- say -- a 60s Fender vintage pickup? Of course there's a lot of variation but if you were to sort of randomly pick up one from that time period, do you have something that would roughly match the magnetic strength, the number of turns of wire and the wire gauge?
Then at least I would know what I'm aiming for.

If a person did demagnetize a pickup what would it act like i mean i may have done that, cked it with meter for dc resistance ,no reading at all, wandering how to ck it, to c what happened to it , ok well duh ,,jus tryed n theres almost no magnetic pull at all . Guess thats that. Im 1 thats lucked out 4 long tym, always used a gun, wont any more. Crap, can they b charged or whatever to get em goin again ? Iv been lookin at ur tele size p90s may just do that. Ok thx.

12:00 You telling that is possible to tap asian pickup. I suppose the ceramic bar will be destroyed.
There is no way except cut metal poles )
I would say it is not a problem to turn pickup upside down.
Why would someone tap the pickup? What a sick person would be to do such things.
For soldering. It is good idea to have adjustable soldering iron. They just about 20$
    Thank you for the video.
