As someone who despises touchscreen interfaces in cars, this one is a no-brainer for me. Even if the Audi cursed at me in German every 100 miles, I'd go for the SQ5. Even though the Velar is gorgeous, I just can't live with having to touch the same screen to use every function.
Im sold with the design of the velar. It's just gorgeous as all the range rovers vehicles nowadays. However it's just a bit too expensive, and overall technology is still a bit behind the sq5, and also reliability is a thing to care about.
Not sure I have a 2017 Porsche Cayenne and 2018 Land Rover discovery, so far the discovery has been drastically more reliable. The Porsche has gotten me stuck on the road three times, makes a terrible grinding sound and halts to a stop. Porsche claims it’s not the transmission and keeps changing various other parts but so far still a nightmare. The Porsche has less miles on it even though it’s 7 months older because it keeps spending weeks at the dealer. Yet some how Porsche was rated one of the most reliable luxury brands. The Rover has a much nicer interior, great air suspension, much more tech features from adaptive cruise and steering to smoother more refined transmission and ride. So my experience has been the exact opposite. Probably going to replace my wife’s cayenne with the velar this year, just working on making Porsche take back the car under lemon law since it’s been in three times for the same repair and it’s broken again.
I chose the SQ5 in Oct after a horrible experience at the rover/jag dealer. I was trying to discuss the differences with them and they told me if I wanted an Audi that a Jag or Rover was not right for me anyway. They did not care about performance, customer service or anything other than status. I love the way the Velar and the F-pace look but you also miss out on Android auto/carplay and the reliability is a non-starter.
Love my 2018 SQ5. Prefer it over my 2018 S3 with almost 385 hp and 380 ft lbs of torque thanks to APR Stage II. The SQ5 is just really nice to drive. Cannot wait to get an APR flash on this motor, 400 plus hp will transform this vehicle.
While the points raised about the SQ5 are very valid, I think the style and overall capabilities of the Velar are well worth the price difference which for me is a win for Range Rover.
Not quite. Velar P380 has 380 horsepower (as name suggests). SQ5 has 354 horsepower. They have almost identical curb weight and 8-speed transmission from ZF. Yet, according to official figures, the P380 does 0-100 kph to 5.7s while SQ5 does 0-100 kph in 5.4s. In fact a lot of media test the Velar and all get something around 6.2/6.3s. I don't get how JLR manage to make a powerful car slow.
Mike Wang actually the Velar P380 has been clocked at 5.3 seconds to 60 and the SQ5 down at 5.1 seconds... Not to mention, the Velar weighs a few hundred pounds more than the Audi.
people who pick audis (in general) don't care for drama or flamboyant aesthetics. they want things done well and done reliably without making a fuss or drawing attention. they just need to look presentable and professional - efficiently stylish.
I like Audi's, but that Velar looks like a class above. The interior on the SQ5 looks so drab and bland, whereas the Velar interior looks stunning. Same story with the exterior really. Not at all surprised the Range Rover is more expensive.
chocolatewheelchair Velar top spec about €100k in Ireland and SQ5 about €85k (to keep it just under the Macan S at €95k). Germany would be slightly less and Netherlands would be more
Just a heads up.. the Range Rover Evoque Black Edition is typically compared to the $60k Q5. The Velar at $90k is almost twice the price of the Volkswagen/Audi Q5 suv. The top Q7 I would compare to the Velar. I own the black edition Evoque and it’s considered above any Q5. 100% fact.
Great video HOWEVER, one critique I have is PLEASE stop clearly showing who the winner is straight from the thumbnail. I technically didn’t even have to watch the video because I knew straight off the bat before watching the video that the SQ5 won this comparison.
The Audi Q5's and the SQ5 over here are beautiful SUV's. But compared to the Velar they pale in comparison. The Velar is just the most striking creation in the SUV world.
Oh, so you think Audi is so much better at reliability? Google audi 2.0T oil consumption issue. Or research how many law suites against Audi forcing thrm to extend warranties, replace engines, install redesigned pistons, etc. LR had an issue with its new 5.0 V8 and had a recall to install redesigned timing tensioner+timing chains+timing guides. Nothing like crap load of law suits against Audi. But again, both LRs and Audis are awesome cars but if you think Audis service department is empty and mechanics got nothing to do and LR service department is overloaded with work, you are wrong. They are both overloaded :)0
I would buy the Audi and lease the velar, but the velar is in another class imo. Long term the Audi will last you 10x longer than the velar and all those moving parts like the screen and door handles in the Velar are bound to break.
I agree. Who would have thought that Rover would make major changes to their interior design - relying more on electrical components. It's gorgeous, but how can you spring for a rig you can't trust to keep on the road? And I tend to buy and keep. Owning one of these vehicles without warranty protection is a nightmare waiting to happen.
Everything on jaguar/Land Rover have expensive repairs. My mom bought a 2011 Jaguar XJL 3 years ago. It's been a great car but you reaaally have to keep up with everything. Only things wrong with it currently is the sunroof shade motor is not functioning, she has a blown out speaker that costs $300+ to replace, and a cracked starter button. Along with someone hitting her rear end in a parking lot and causing her parking sensor to fall out of place and costing over $3k to replace. So... everything in these cars, you need a loan to fix if you don't keep up with them.
Incorrect. Volkswagen/Audi have had a lot of issues dating back to the 1980s. Reality and fact is both vehicles will last the same time but we should be comparing Oranges to oranges. The Q5 VS Evoque Dynamic Black Edition.
For similar comparisons. Between the jaguar f-pace s and the Audi sq5. I chose the Audi hands down. The engine and platform on the Jag felt unrefined, noisy, and drove like my 2006 fx35.
2 years ago I almost pulled the trigger on the SQ5, so pretty and practical for me as a new dad but we went in a different direction. Still, that Audi is outstanding!
It wasn't better in everything , I'm not sure if you watched the whole video or not , sq5 is more comfortable ,more sporty , more composed , reliable materials than the velar. The velar has nicer interior , good off-road e.t.c
Land Rover Discovery Sport would be size wise match but there is no V6 for that thing. I guess the whole idea of the video is to match something from LR to SQ5, Velar is smallest LR available with V6, no Evoque nor Discovery Sport have V6/I6 available, unfortunately.
I understand the Audi wins for value for money and on-road capabilities, but no one able to afford the premium price of the Velar would ever go for the SQ5. Great quality interior? Maybe, but the design of the Velar's makes the SQ5 cabin look boring, outdated and cheaper. Plus, the Velar is also posh and more styled on the outside, it's more capable offroad, more customizable and more powerful. Seems like its only flaw is its price: well, there must be a reason why it's that higher. If I could afford the Range Rover, I wouldn't even bother considering the Audi.
I can afford either but chose the 18 audi sq5 for me its better then the velar in and out have you heard the engine on the sq5 im a man and performance is key rover lacks that
lol. SQ5 edges out on top for me. it's a smaller sporty suv. the velar is a luxury suv boat. To each their own. For me, can't beat what you're getting with the SQ5 for the money. It also comes with a large aftermarket scene thanks to it's siblings the S4 and S5.
People who can ACTUALLY AFFORD these cars (I'm talking about people who make over $250k a year+ and over $1million in assets, not people who spend ALL THEIR INCOME on a car) don't care about the depreciation. Many lease under a business as well, so they don't care about depreciation, either, just the monthly payment and down payment.
In 2 years they will worth half their price. First of all, it's in a good category, Luxury CUV. Second, SQ5 is a desirable car and the market has always been good on their resale value. You can still find 2014 SQ5 with over 30k asking price. The base model is around 60 back in 2014. If you said it was a BMW 3 series or Mercedes C class, then that's different.
Velar a better looking vehicle but those HANDLES are a dealbreaker for me...u KNOW they're going to break RIGHT AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. No thanks. Also, can do without all of the screens inside. Looks flashy but asking for trouble longer term..
Well, the Velar might have a more prestigious image, but once you drive them back to back, the Audi is light years ahead in enjoyment even in auto mode. Dynamic mode brings it to non-compete territory against the Velar. It becomes one with the road and the steering goes exactly where you aim.
I don't think this guy took the Velar's design into account at all. The Audi just looks like any other Tonka Toy German 4x4 whereas the RR looks like nothing else. It LOOKS 10 grand more than the SQ, and I'm talking £ not $. I have a R-Dynamic HSE V6, but the diesel version which you don't get in the States. It's nearly as fast as the P380, has a lot more torque, and I average 34mpg on a very busy 25 mile commute out and in to London. Never had an SUV, never wanted one until now. Emotion emptied my wallet - as it does for a lot of folk. Mr Tester should remember that.
There is an annoying issue with F-Pace and Velar that no reviewer mentions: there are huge humps on both sides of center console that are very intrusive and hit your foot all the time. And X3 M40i is faster, more efficient, and nicer inside than both.
Great review but the wrong conclusion - the Audi's alloy wheels and interior are the high points , but does not diminish the fact the styling is bland , bordering on ugly - what would you rather look at sitting in your driveway, the totally gorgeous and mesmerising Velar or the Q5 , which is a lazy safe, choice . I've driven 3 ALFA'S on lease from new and when l changed my mind from a LEXUS 220d , they pointed out ALFA's poor reliability issues. As it had 3 year warranty l went with the beautiful 159 TI - The deal breaker , what would l rather look at everyday in my driveway [as well as drive] - yep u guessed it , the 159TI. l've just ordered the Velar R Dynamic with 22inch first edition alloys from JLR in Belfast , can't wait....
If you want to drive your car on the road - get the SQ5. If you don’t mind your car being in the repair shop... get a Range Rover. It wont be long before those door handles stick in - especially if they get dirty i.e. off road.
Lol, you compared Audi to Range Rover Velar... maybe Evoque? Or the Disco Sport. The difference in level, quality, design is worlds apart, before we discuss uniqueness, exclusivity and curve side appeal. If you are basing any decisions of this level on money. You simply cannot afford one. None of these vehicles are necessities so if you're going into an SQ5 or a Velar P380 HSE R Dynamic with a budget lol, what are we doing?
I don't understand why people would spend so much on a velar when you can get a sport for almost the same price. I never get basic loaded cars I usually get them moderatly spec out. A velar would cost $75k and a sport $81k. I think the velar is over priced.
Audi looks too dated badly needs an update, the only Audi worth a look now is the Q8. Audi needs to give all its cars a similar interior to the Q8 and an exterior refresh.
Boring to drive? HUH? Also, you shouldn't be jamming on that air suspension back and forth every few miles... WTF? Choose a dang mode and drive the car.... you want a huge button in the center like Volvo has? Stupid... you don't change modes all that often.
"The Velar is a striking design with an achingly gorgeous interior" Sorry, no. The Velar is ugly from any angle you look at. Interior won't save it. The SQ5 is more attractive and the design is smooth. Audi knows how to make actual cars, Range Rover doesn't. SQ5 is the more drivable car anytime, every time.
Yeah, The velar looks like it has, dare I say, "Kim K's Rear end." By that I mean, it looks awkward on the Range Rover, just like it does on Kim. And I'm a Butt man myself lol
This Reviewer is a corporate shill. He spends over double the time talking about Range Rover features and starts the Audi review with a negative. TILTED REVIEW.
id buy the velar as its got a way better interior plus it looks miles better than the sq5 .. i dont know where this bad reliabilty of land rover vehicles comes from as they all seem to be just as reliable here n uk as the german vehicles, maybe you yanks just dont drive them properly on ya wide open roads that we just dont get here in uk .. maybe
As someone who despises touchscreen interfaces in cars, this one is a no-brainer for me. Even if the Audi cursed at me in German every 100 miles, I'd go for the SQ5. Even though the Velar is gorgeous, I just can't live with having to touch the same screen to use every function.

Personally I would lease the rover.
Vehicle Virals only a maniac would buy it. They’re meant to be leased
Agreed
Yes! Brits should stick with making tea and doctor who shows.
chocolatewheelchair Why not buy it brand new?
I wanna know your personal reasons

Want to go expensive ? Wait for October when the Velar SVR launches
J024🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Peter that’s the thing, it’s looks like it but when comparing both tech and power, Audi rules supreme over the Range Rover.
Evoque is real competitor to Q5
I remember decades ago when car manufacturers would try to have the biggest engine possible. Now its all about who has the biggest grille.
The Velar's grille is proportional and is required for engine cooling
I just wish the SQ5 front end could be cleaned up or at least differentiate it more from the Q5.
How much would a down payment be needed for the velar base model
Simply amazing how cheap these cars are in the US compared to Germany or the Netherlands
How so?
chocolatewheelchair Velar top spec about €100k in Ireland and SQ5 about €85k (to keep it just under the Macan S at €95k). Germany would be slightly less and Netherlands would be more

Yeah keep talking, I'm from India. 167K Euros for Velar.
Definitely the range rover

The RANGE VELAR look more beautiful, sleek and stylish than the AUDI Q5
So the velar was better at everything but the Audi wins because it's cheaper?😅
You can always get a better car adding 15 grands to the price, so yeah - no wonder Range Rover loses, still being an awesome car

Alexander Damberg What makes you think he couldn’t? Chill out bro.
I have a 2020 SQ5 and the quality and drive is superb. The Velar might look good but Range Rover and the Velar have massive reliability issues.
Range Rover is best
The Audi Q series just look like copy paste version of each other
Gundeep Virdi das güd right?
SQ5 is nicer. I love Audi. I can't wait to replace my 2018 Prestige Q7 for a SQ7 TDi when it hits America 😍❤🙋♀️
ok - although there was a lot of nit picking he did come to the correct conclusion.
$90,000 for a CUV???? Really??? Nah bruh, rather by some property with equity. These cars in 2 years won't be worth half their asking price.

casualsuede thats true. You still have a market for people who don't have that, will still spend income on a car. Just my opinion
Velar will be worth more than the Audi
when I saw the velar concept I thought it will have a V10 twin turbo
V10! Do you even understand cars or wher velar fits in the rover family ?
Velar is more powerful than the competition
too bad..the current gen audi looks too bland
The Volkswagen/Audi Q5 is plain Jane and I wouldn’t spend a dime on Volkswagen ever again.
Velar a better looking vehicle but those HANDLES are a dealbreaker for me...u KNOW they're going to break RIGHT AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES. No thanks. Also, can do without all of the screens inside. Looks flashy but asking for trouble longer term..

The rover is nice but too overwhelming. Even though the Audi interior is a tad boring, I like it better plainly due to simplicity.

Range Rover is better. End of discussion
100% correct.
Yes end of discussion
TTMM - Taz The Melon Muncher no it’s not
It makes the Audi look flipping ugly doesn’t it ? Quite an achievement .
Range Rover is much better
Wait Reliability? Reliability and Range Rover in the same sentence?
SQ5 all the way.
Velar is best then audi Q5 I think you should do comparison with Q8
range rover and quality don't last longtime and it is exspensive to repair
Range rover is best car ever
Compare a specced out SQ7 with the rover. SQ7 is way nicer than both of these SUVs

I'm a Velar owner and have no idea what you're talking about. Maybe that's why they aren't mentioning it.
I wish the VELAR can have the AUDI Q5 QUATTRO drive

Velar.... period!
please I choose the awesome AUDI 😱
Grandmother given temple dmvut northeast timing committee almost actual one test rely.
Why did they compare it to the sq5 the sq5 is smaller, it should be compared to the q7 or q8
It easy to see that you prefer range Rover ... I don't understand why I will need to see this video ...
Velar vs Q8 will better comparison
Evoque vs Q5, and Evoque is better and more expensive
Almost every car manufacturer, except Land Rover, failed to design front side including bumper ..
Lol, you compared Audi to Range Rover Velar... maybe Evoque? Or the Disco Sport.
The difference in level, quality, design is worlds apart, before we discuss uniqueness, exclusivity and curve side appeal. If you are basing any decisions of this level on money. Audi looks too dated badly needs an update, the only Audi worth a look now is the Q8. Audi needs to give all its cars a similar interior to the Q8 and an exterior refresh.

Velar rocks
I’ll have the Range Rover any day
X3 M40i for the win. Lease the Velar for its stricking design.
Velar looks sexy, but Audi has more durability....
Boring to drive? HUH? Also, you shouldn't be jamming on that air suspension back and forth every few miles... WTF? Choose a dang mode and drive the car.... you want a huge button in the center like Volvo has? Stupid... you don't change modes all that often.
Stupid review... So boring Audi's design. How can you choose a Q5 over a Velar 🤦♂️?!
The Audi's just don't look as good as Land Rover vehicles.
This Reviewer is a corporate shill. He spends over double the time talking about Range Rover features and starts the Audi review with a negative. TILTED REVIEW.
In this day and age, gas mileage on these vehicles is terrible!
id buy the velar as its got a way better interior plus it looks miles better than the sq5 .. i dont know where this bad reliabilty of land rover vehicles comes from as they all seem to be just as reliable here n uk as the german vehicles, maybe you yanks just dont drive them properly on ya wide open roads that we just dont get here in uk .. maybe
The same old boring Audi (it looks like a sink/washbasin)...I would definitely go for the Velar.
Ops...I did 😂
JLR reliability and quality are horrendous.
Audi sq5 isn’t that nice compared to the velar. Velar looks much better
Check individual diversity latter rule sound mark desire.
Choice shows auto guides personality. Boring
How can you even compare that boring ugly looking Audi with the beautiful Velar? Theres no competition.
Its the union flag.
Audi every day.
