Yes, he did. Bruce has no magical ancestors in his lineage. Because of that, he could not do what Constantine and Zatanna do, as in the magic that has no bad sides to it. The title Justice League Dark was referring to a team called "Justice League Dark". Basically, they are Justice League but they deal with the dark sides of magic and supernatural. So that's why we're not focusing on the Justice League we know of.
Superman comes to the smallest disturbance. He even rescued a boy from his abusive father after he was locked in the basement and prevented someone from taking their life by jumping from a building.
DC's long-standing answer to which religion/folklore is true has basically been "why not all of them?" 😅 Odin has popped up from time to time, the Roman and Greek pantheons both exist as separate beings, some Aztec gods are still around, and countless other mythologies will show up in various comics. Plus it's a common fan theory that the Abrahamic God resides on the other side of the Source Wall.
Marvel has the same idea. Their answer to which religion is true was just a simple "Yes." Also, some fans theorize that the Marvel multiverse is on the other side of the Source Wall.
Its kinda lazy but still pretty cool, they're basically going with the Abrahamic belief of one true god of creation and a bunch of powerful beings wrongfully worshipped as gods by humanity

Fun Fact: Batman during his training journey tried to learn magic, but was stopped by Giovanni Zatanna (Zatanna's Dad) due to the downsides learning Magic would have for Bruce. Magic in DC always comes with a sacrifice. And someone so full of Pain like Bruce would be too dangerous to teach. For both others and himself. It's in Batman: The Knight #7 by Chip Zdarsky, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascencia, and Pat Brosseau,
The DCAU is probably the most underrated thing in entertainment today. It's movies like this that prove my point. I just hope that James Gunn can do the live action scene justice.
@@J__T I think the most important things that all of the animated DC properties do regardless of which timeline they're in is something that the MCU did for the first couple of movies and then just completely dropped. That is that the movies can be watched and enjoyed whether or not you have seen the movies before. You can go into Flashpoint, JL Dark, JL vs The Teen Titans, The Judas Contract, JL: Doom, and so on without having watched the movies before. I would say this is true in the MCU for every movie until Ironman 3.
something to note with Constantine and Zatanna is that Zatanna can be considered more powerful in magic because she uses it more. However, Constantine is more experienced with the darker side of magic and demons compared to Zatanna which is ultimately what the JL needs, an expert on dark magic and demons. Also Constantine is regarded by Dr. Fate as having the potential to be the most powerful magic user, but he doesn't actually put much focus into practicing magic compared to someone like Zatanna and normally relies on his charisma and manipulation to achieve his goals.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that “Magic” the the most OP ability to have in the world of DC movies or media 😐 it’s really insane to have that much power and deal with supernatural stuff.
It really is, but there's only a handful people in the world who that these levels of magical power and one of them spent centuries developing it. Human's aren't naturally compatible with magic, so to break through a certain threshold, you need mutant bloodlines, contracts, or inhuman transplants. Fun fact, pretty much all of Constantine's impressive latent magic is consumed by his ridiculous bloodline passive ability, so to do things he does here, when not relying on magic objects, he sold his soul to a large amount of different demons, in exchange for their blood, such that if any ever try to collect, they'll start a turf war in hell.
@@TheArcSet that seem a bold move for Constantine to do that, but hey he is a bold man and willing to do whatever it take to be fair on the magic field or dark side of DC comics

I know it's such a small moment, but Batman trying to talk the mother down and get her help (he obviously didn't know what was going on and assumed she was having a mental health crisis) and then when he saves the baby he tells the baby he's sorry. THAT'S THE BATMAN I WANT TO SEE MORE OF There is a real element of compassion with Batman that we don't really get in the live action movies. Batman doesn't just beat up criminals left right and center he legitimately wants to help people who need it. I personally like the quote "If you've written Batman and you can't picture him comforting a small child, you have not written Batman" I am hard pressed to think of live action examples that passed that test.
You mean like Batfleck saving the Wally(the security guy for the Wayne Building) and hugging the little girl in the beginning of BvS or Battinson at the end of The Batman

@@Jay-gq1mo I actually don't have an issue with Batman killing people, as long as the project treats the concept with respect. Why Batman kills is infinitely more interesting than if he kills, and Snyder's response to the criticism told me everything I needed to know about where his head was at when it was thought up. And yes, I know it's implied that the Joker killed Robin and that's the reason. All well and good. I just don't like how the movie actually handled it and for me the violence throughout it almost negates Bruce's compassionate moment from the beginning. To give a contrasting example, the Batman in the Dark Knight Returns animated movie is pretty much Batfleck. I don't recall if he explicitly killed anyone but with some of the injuries, realistically he probably did. I can still see that version comforting a small child even with how violent he is Had the rest of BvS balanced out Batman's violence with his compassionate side or more interestingly if it treated Batman killing people as a character study I probably would like it a lot more and actually count it as a great example
True, Matt is the prime Constantine actor, however I'm of the opinion that Keanu's Constantine is good enough of a character and world building to have its own series and definitely his own iconic name.
Alec Holland was once a scientist that got into a chemical accident which turned him into a plant/humaniod like creature ( kinda like groot except he was born that way ) and it granted him the ability to connect his roots into the entire earth and gain control over all plant life and granting him the most access to The Green. He's basically Immortal too he can regenerate easily as long as theirs plant life around dont matter how small it could be a little bush, messed up roots, even a piece of Tobacco and he's back to normal he's incredibly OP. He doesnt get involved with the Justice League unless it extremely necessary like a serious threat to The Green or Planet, and he doesn't like helping humans either much due to them being the ones mostly destroying plant life with their toxic chemicals and nuclear warfare.
The fact that Constantine's voice actor also plays his live action version in the tv series is just crazy, and I honestly want him in the movies but ngl its hard to choose between his version and Keanu Reeves' version of the Hellblazer. Also, rip to my man Swamp Thing, one of the many characters that got nerf to shit in this movie franchise.
You guys really need to binge the Batman the Animated series, Superman the Animated series, and Justice League/Unlimited - it'll give you all the context you need.
one of the coolest things about comics, supes and their adaptations is that it’s just a medium not a genre. so you can have superhero stories that are medieval, futuristic, spy thriller, cosmic, multiversal, romance, comedy, horror, blends of these and more and they all work. especially DC and Marvel both have a very rich and expansive magical/supernatural lore
20:44 Etrigan the Demon is half brother of Merlin, in JLU there is an old character that became DC through acquisition named Shinning Knight. He was a knight if the round table and served King Arthur. There is also the Roman Pantheon in DC, The Amazon's are part of that. Hermes is the first Speedster, Diana's mother is Hyppolita.
The premise to this one was just the best idea. Get all the magic and supernatural based heroes from DC and have Batman in charge of them for a night time adventure. It just makes sense and it just works.
12:00 funny enough batman doesn't need magic to beat up ghosts lol he does it on the regular. He fights a character called gentleman ghost who's a old like Victorian English ghost lol. He tried to learn magic but was told by Zatanna's dad not too because someone of his past would only attract dark spirits and demons nothing good would come of it.
So, Constantine's deal is that he's the very round about heir to a ridiculously OP magic, that's best described as either the best evil blessing, or a terrible curse. He passively manipulates fate, by stealing good fortune from everyone around him. Being near him is like second hand smoke, but most of his stats can be considered "irrelevant level". The only law of a Hellraiser story is, Constantine has to end up worse off at the end.
Zatanna is my favourite DC character. I REALLY wished she got more love. The fact that she only got ONE episode in BOTH Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League Unlimited really says a lot about how underrated she is. Although I'm very happy to see her shine more in DC Super Hero Girls. I do hope you watch the 2005 Constantine movie. This shows how much of a comic book noob I am, but it was my introduction to the character of John Constantine. It wasn't until I watched the special features on the 2-disc DVD set that I learned about him and who he's really supposed to be.

Definitely one of the better DCAMU movies, and I love the deep dive into the magical/horror side of DC comics since there are so many characters that tap into that world of DC Comics like Constantine, Zatanna, Dr Fate, Swamp Thing, Raven, Deadman, Jason Blood/Etrigan, Enchantress, Detective Chimp, Shazam, Wonder Woman etc... Speaking of Zatanna, she is actually one of my favourite female DC characters and is an underrated character, and I like how Zatanna speaks backwards to conjure spells and use magic. That scene where she shows how OP she truly is with her magic is so DOPE! Her dynamic relationship with Constantine is also entertaining as Constantine is a bastard and knows it. Matt Ryan, as John Constantine, is such perfect casting that he plays the character in live-action CW DC shows. I wish more DC projects would dive into the magical side of the universe.
Constatine is essentially the Batman of the Magic side of the DC Universe, only not rich, not a ninja, and is british. But ultimately John is just a guy ( who tricks demons and knows spell) with a screwed up backstory and brings pain many who get to know him. The one thing about constatine stories is that they rearely have happy endings.
Interesting thing stated in the movie. The shrouds deliver souls to help and they were interested in Batman saying he evaded them many times. Why would they be interested in him unless bats was to be sent to hell?
Batman doesn't use magic because he was introduced in the comics long before magic users entered DC and it would betray the point of Batman to be magical or a chosen one archetype. All other reasons are superfluous by writers closing a plothole due to the fact if humans could get superpowers naturally just by studying a subject Batman should be a master of it.
Fun fact: In several comics, Batman gains the use of a Green Lantern ring. Imagine the power of a Green Lantern in BATMAN'S HANDS! THAT is terrifying. The man with an absolutely shielded mind, capable of using his imagination to exact justice. Yeah... GL Batman is something I wanna see in one of these Justice League movies.
Thing about Constantine? He does save the world. He just damns every friend who helps him on the way. He is a selfish con man, a man who hates himself for caring about others even a little bit, an unrepentant womanizer and the guy who hangs around demons for fun. Despite all that he tries to help, but methods he chooses are not heroic and that always ends up badly. He saves a life of ex-girlfriend but turns her into vampire. He defeats a demon, but a girl's soul gets captured and dragged into hell. He achieves mission objectives, it is never a happy ending.
Just a thought, but would you guys be interested in reacting to Death Battle? They take characters who wouldn't normally crossover otherwise, analyze them, and have them fight. It's very good and the only thing is I would recommend matchups where you are at least familiarized enough with both characters
The part where they tell Constantine that his ass is grass and we’re the lawnmower my mom and my step dad said that too me when ever I did something wrong as a warning and my grandparents also used to say it to me all the time as well

Zatanna is SO powerfull. She's a Homo Magi, a race of humans with the ability to do magic. Her father John Zatara, is a Homo Magi and one of the most powerfull sorcerers in DC aswell as her mother Sindella, a sorceress from another dimension. Her spells alter reality by speaking backwards and can make annything happend from turning a ghost to Stone to time travel. She's just as powerfull as the Scarlet Witch. And both of them are badass women who had a goth phase/version, and that's why i love them. Zatanna is also a descendant from leonardo Da Vinci
Yeah dude!! The DC and Marvel universes are probably the most in depth fictional universes ever created. Every mythology or legend exists within the confines of both universes. Thor actually appeared in DC before Marvel. Morgan Le Fay, King Arthur’s evil sister is a major Justice League and Avengers villain. It’s mind blowing the amount of lore that exists in DC and Marvel. The movies and shows don’t even scratch the surface and they water all the characters down. Bruce Wayne’s ancestor was the dark knight of Camelot.
Batman's stance on this always weirded me out because this takes place after *Teen Titans vs. the Justice League*, a movie filled with magic and demons. Heck, Damian went to a hell dimension. Then again, he did take himself out early on in the movie to avoid possession, but he surely would have read up on the reports and seen the film of everything that happened. Then again, it's kind of like that in the comics too. Especially in certain eras, he was staunchly a non-believer in magic, got sent to a fairy world, interacted with the Celtic god of fairies, roped Wonder Woman into it because of her tie-in with the Greek gods, yada yada yada, and came out of it still claiming there's no such thing as magic-all while helping prepare a spell. It's more like a coping mechanism stemming from a lack of control. Maintaining a rational framework in situations where logic and reason seem insufficient, but how it's portrayed is still a bit silly to me sometimes.

Since the reason Batman doesn't use magic in the main timeline. Is because the way magic works in the DC universe and feeds on your energy, Bruce no matter how well intentioned. Would eventually go dark.
He already gave himself multiple personality disorder that could act as a back up in case he was ever compromised. And that version of him managed to take control and put himself in the mind of a robot Bruce had designed to take himself out of he ever killed someone.
Now imagine what he would have done if he could do magic? I'm never gonna get a chance to write an elseworlds story, so I hope one day that someone figures out a way to tell the story of the magic using Batman.
Batman’s not allowed to have magic. He’d start a multiversal event
Even without magic, he basically started a multiversal event.
There's gotta be some comics in a parallel universe in which he does get/use magic more consistently. One path things go just fine, if not better, and the other is utter chaos cuz of how capable he is even before it.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 Batman is willing to sacrifice to much and has a lot to sacrifice basically he can’t use magic because he’d become a second Constantine and the universe hates having one Constantine
The title Justice League Dark was referring to a team called "Justice League Dark". Basically, they are Justice League but they deal with the dark sides of magic and supernatural. So that's why we're not focusing on the Justice League we know of.
"I send you a costume when you get older" caught me by surprise, well done
Superman comes to the smallest disturbance. He even rescued a boy from his abusive father after he was locked in the basement and prevented someone from taking their life by jumping from a building.
DC's long-standing answer to which religion/folklore is true has basically been "why not all of them?" 😅
Odin has popped up from time to time, the Roman and Greek pantheons both exist as separate beings, some Aztec gods are still around, and countless other mythologies will show up in various comics.
Plus it's a common fan theory that the Abrahamic God resides on the other side of the Source Wall.
Marvel has the same idea. Their answer to which religion is true was just a simple "Yes."
Also, some fans theorize that the Marvel multiverse is on the other side of the Source Wall.
Its kinda lazy but still pretty cool, they're basically going with the Abrahamic belief of one true god of creation and a bunch of powerful beings wrongfully worshipped as gods by humanity
It's the unconscious collective
They very much run on the "if enough people remember" type thing for most gods
The God of War franchise has also canonized this concept of all pantheons existing in the same universe.
12:02 in the comics he was trained by xutara... zatanas father in stage magic for things like escape and disapearing... he was also told how to do a single spell to dispell magic... he didnt trust him to not missuse anything more
He's also a descendent of the Family called the Laughing Magicians which have been know to outwit both Gods and Demons and he also has demon blood inside him which allows him to do magic in the first place

(At 29:44) Like Felix Faust said (despite y'all cut it off on TH-cam), "Zatanna's the only one here, who's REALLY a threat"

Swamp thing is the guardian of the green essentially an earth spirit that was born in the swamp more often then not helps heroes. He's in Louisiana but he can break his body down and grow from the tiniest plant life anywhere on the planet. Or to other planets based on Alan Moore run. I met Matt Ryan at a convention a few years ago and he signed/ autographed my copy of this movie and also took a few selfie pictures with me, he's a cool guy 😎
FUN FACT Etrigan doesn't need to rhyme or anything he just does it to mess with people.
10:00 in old comics his key threats are mobsters, psychos, criminal organizations and the supernatural. even the new batman caped crusadert show got an episode for that when batman first supernatural threat is gentleman ghost.
Fun fact, Constantine is a spin-off character that first appeared in the Swamp Thing comics. My one complaint about this movie is not enough Swamp Thing but he's also my favorite comic book character period.
I love how the subs say"Incanting in another language" for Zatanna when that's definitely not the case, she's just speaking backwards

Magic in DC always comes with a sacrifice. And someone so full of Pain like Bruce would be too dangerous to teach. For both others and himself.

The DCAU is probably the most underrated thing in entertainment today. It's movies like this that prove my point. I just hope that James Gunn can do the live action scene justice.
This is the DCAMU. DCAU is BTAS and Justice League Unlimited and whatnot. Different continuities.
Man the Jack Haley just can not catch a break, bro sees so many of his best acts end in death
something to note with Constantine and Zatanna is that Zatanna can be considered more powerful in magic because she uses it more.
Zatanna is way more powerful but I get your point

Superman definitely takes time to look after smaller crimes too, Lots of comics where he helps out abused children or saves cats from trees lol
The guy at the beginning, when he claims to have seen monsters and tells them to check his shed, reminds me of the Tell-Tale Heart story. I remember reading that when I was younger, and it always stuck with me. The idea of doing that to people, but absolutely believing they're monsters, has always been scary to me.
@@TheArcSet Constantine is pretty much like Zatanna and Destiny here. Homo Magi, an offshoot of human beings, like the metahumans are, and descendants of gods, sorcerers, witches, warlocks, wizards, and wiccans.
He does all of that, because he does not want to do what Zatanna did, and go to magic school, though in her case, she was fully trained by her father.
I can't remember the name but I remember there being a comic that said batman can't learn magic because all his trauma combined with magic would be very bad for the universe
I'm so glad you're reacting to this movie! Matt Ryan, is the voice actor for Constantine. He also played Constantine in the TV series adaptation and in the Arrowverse. He is widely considered as having one of the best portrayals of the character. A lot of people were disappointed to learn that Keanu Reeves was going portray the character again in the up and coming movie and not Matt. You guys' reaction to Batman almost getting pasted is exactly what my reaction was and I was so happy to see it. It's such a tense scene and movie and that brief moment of relief was so needed there.
I know it's such a small moment, but Batman trying to talk the mother down and get her help (he obviously didn't know what was going on and assumed she was having a mental health crisis) and then when he saves the baby he tells the baby he's sorry. THAT'S THE BATMAN I WANT TO SEE MORE OF
There is a real element of compassion with Batman that we don't really get in the live action movies.
@@Jay-gq1mo granted, however with the rest of that movie having him slaughtering people left and right and Zack Snyders temper tantrum where he cussed out fans asking him why batman kills in this movie, I don't know that I can count that on principle alone

@@brianalambert1192 btw don't get me wrong I agree with the sentiment that Bruce's compassion is an element of his character we need more of
@@Jay-gq1mo I actually don't have an issue with Batman killing people, as long as the project treats the concept with respect.
I can still see that version comforting a small child even with how violent he is
Had the rest of BvS balanced out Batman's violence with his compassionate side or more interestingly if it treated Batman killing people as a character study I probably would like it a lot more and actually count it as a great example
constantine is underrated, him and Batman are my fav 🦇🔥
Completely unrelated but I just saw Star Wars the Clone Wars debuted for diamond Billys and I'm shaking with anticipation
I'm so hyped that you got to know John Constantine, who imo is even more badass than Batman
Edit: okay, seems like you know him already xD
Now this is some peak Constantine content, anytime Matt Ryan gets to play him is peak Constantine. Far better than the Keanu version, that’s for sure.
True, Matt is the prime Constantine actor, however I'm of the opinion that Keanu's Constantine is good enough of a character and world building to have its own series and definitely his own iconic name.
At least they acknowledged Keanu version as other variant of JC in the multiverse.
(At 28:05) He changed Etrigan in to Jason blood, by stabbing him with a unicorn horn?
Fun fact: Keanu Reeves has expressed interest in revisiting Constantine as a character
one of the coolest things about comics, supes and their adaptations is that it’s just a medium not a genre. so you can have superhero stories that are medieval, futuristic, spy thriller, cosmic, multiversal, romance, comedy, horror, blends of these and more and they all work. especially DC and Marvel both have a very rich and expansive magical/supernatural lore
12:01 Batman isn’t allowed to use it cause he would be too strong
The fun thing about Zatanna's magic is to cast her spells she speaks her words backwards. Go away = Og yawa
"I don't know who that guy is! They never introduced him!" And they never will.
Fun Fact about Etrigan: Raven is technically his aunt, since her half-brother is Etrigan’s father
Justice League Dark is a branch of the Justice League that deals with magic and supernatural threats
I love just how fed up with magic Batman is in this film 😂😂😂
Also fun fact if you remember the injustice film Nightwing becomes deadman instead
One of my favorite swamp thing issues, his girlfriend gets arrested in Gotham for inter species relations… Batman argues that love is love, but Jim Gordon is like, it just gives me the ick… so in protest, swamp thing makes 12 foot buds of.. um… oxygen sprout through the city
The dream stone is actually one of the most powerful artifacts in Dc Comics. The Stone belongs to the primordial embodiment of dreams and nightmares, Dream/The Sandman/Morpheus. The middle brother of The Endless and is the ruler of his realm the Dreaming. The Netflix show The Sandman and its spinoff series Dead Boy Detectives, are a great watch and adaptation of Neil Gaimans work.
"Just give Batman magic" is what I was saying in the Ra's Al Gul part in Arkham City, that skill tree would be crazy
'F you John' is pretty much Constantine's most heard phrase I feel like. lol Dude will sell someone else's soul just to save himself.
Matt Ryan is a perfect Constantine, and I genuinely dread the day they recast the role.
Matt Ryan is my Constantine. He's played him for years, live action and animated. I've never seen the Keanu Reeves Constantine. But I highly recommend the one season of the Constantine show with Matt Ryan it's awesome
Yeah, you guys need to learn more about Constantine. He's the only person in the DC Multiverse with big enough balls to ask Trigon to light his cigarette.
Fun fact Batman actually does have Magical gauntlets, Nth Metal knuckles, and does know some levels of Magic to help him fight ghosts, super powers beings and other supernatural entities.

That killed me.
3:25 Batmans looking at that baby like

Frailty reference, points, an entire stack of points!

Oh Batman has always known Magic was real, he trained escape artistry under Zatanna’s father, Zatara the magician.
One thing you guys might have missed is that when ever Zatanna is using sorcery she speaks backwards
zatanna is very powerful and a core member of the Justice League Dark, and All of her spells she uses is actually her speaking backwards ^^

Boom's line about the RNC caught me so off guard lol 🤣
