    Every street photographer needs a lens like this, which is an affordable zoom lens. You might think having the most expensive fast prime lens is the way to go. Well, there's more to it than that. Before choosing your perfect street photography camera and lens combination, we need to find the right street photography focal length for our specific needs.

    Wow, this price comparison between Fuji/Sony and MFT made me realise how much I'm saving with Olympus.
    Regarding the topic, when I just got the camera I tried to force myself to use only a single focal length on Lumix G 12-32mm. But soon I found that it requires too much mental effort to restrain myself from changing it. I was constantly tempted to try either shorter or longer focal length just to see how the scene works in these settings. It's a great lens though. My super compact lightweight travel kit is this lens + Lumix 20mm F1.7.

      I think af speed of Lumix 20 mm 1.7 is a bit criticized, but still it's in my list for my Olympus e-m10m3

      @@MusabTahaTarik Yes, AF is the worst of this lens: it's slow and noisy. I wish Panasonic released a new version of this lens with internal focus system or at least a more quiet one. Mine is the first version, but from what I heard the updated version has zero improvements in AF performance.

    That makes a lot of sense. I use my 24-70 for 99% of my shots, so I stand by a zoom lens 🔥 Great video again bro!

    This is what I tell people think of a zoom lens like a bunch of primes and only zoom when you really need to. I shoot weddings and I will pic a focal range I want or zoom just depending what place or the wedding I'm at in the day. Sometimes I'm in a small room with the bride getting ready so I can go a wide if I really need to but if I'm outside that's when I really start thinking of my zooms more like primes.
    Yes there will be times when I just zoom and don't think about it. At weddings things happen so fast trying to get candids.
    My go to lens are Olympus 12-40mm f2.8 and Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8.

    I've always been a 28mm girl, even in my days with film. My back up focal length was 50mm. Nowadays, I'm taking a liking to 35, but in general it's the 28mm that I feel the most comfortable with - perhaps because of the reasons you mention. I like to get more into my scene and that wider FOV also renders the subject in a way like no other focal length. Very well done, George!

      I'ts fun seeing the different focal lengths people are into. I shot almost exclusively with a 50 mm for 2 years and liked it a lot. I'd use a wide angle for woodland photography and that was about it. I am exploring documentary photography now and still go with the 50 mm ( I am usually a one lens person) but I am finding I get in tight spots especially inside and need a wider lens, I have a 30 mm equivalent for my lumix. Interesting because not as wide as a 28 but not quite a 35. I like it but find it difficult as a walk around, I live in small town a 50 mm allows me to take candids without getting in their face :-). I think with street you can use whatever you like as it's complete artistic freedom, with documentary I feel I need back up to tell the story sometimes.

    Thank you for this video George.
    I have my primes. Recently purchased a Panasonic GX9 with the kit 12-60mm lens. Plan A was to sell this lens to help pay for the body. After all, I own the PL 12-60mm lens. I started using the Pany kit lens and was surprised how much I like it.
    I understand the exercise you are advocating. I now split the difference. I frequently take two bodies with me for my street work. The GX9 has the zoom and the GX85 mostly the PL15 or the P25. The best of both worlds. My camera bag is for carrying water, spare batteries &memory cards, plus a tiny notebook not lenses.
    I have never learned to see in one focal length. Perhaps because I don’t focus on using one focal length all the time.

    Well... never really occurred to me to do that, but it sounds like a fun idea. I'll find it challenging because 95% of what i shoot depends (for me) on getting the framing right, and the difference between primes and zooms is the amount of walking i have to do. Good video making a good argument - Lkd&Subd. All the best from New Zealand.

    Nice concept, I tried it with my Sony a6000. Now I have 7 Prime Lenses for 3 Sensor formats ... not what you intended 😂 Now I'm using zooms full out or full in because everything in betweene I have covered with primes 🙈 ... and the only ones I'm using are the 85mm-ish FOV primes 😂 God dam'n it, it is so much fun being inconsistent with the purchase of equipment 🤓 Greetings from Westphalia!

    I am still using Sony A6000 pairing with Sigma 30mm f2.8. Already 7-8 years old combo. 45mm f/4.2 full frame equivalent ( the aperture also changes once we multiple with crop factor) however feels relaxed. Neither too close nor too far.

    People can easily establish their personal ' focal length '. Every photographer has one . Just have a look at the Exif data of your favourite photographs in LR or similar editing software. You will see the range. Those are the focal lengths you need in prime. My preferences for using primes against zooms are based on size and fast apertures. I find zooms bulky, expensive and heavy. This is from experience. I have three versions of Nikon 80~200 F2.8 . Now you know what I mean.

    Recently bought a Nikon Z5 with a 40mm muffin lens. Yea, between a pancake and cucumber sized lens, we have the muffin. 🤔 That works out fine. Actually, when I add my other cameras, I have all those other lengths, which in their own way, render the goodness. Only problem is keeping in mind what is in hand. This 40mm is pretty natural, as in when I see something to photograph I am not surprised by what is in the frame when doing a quick shot. It is boooom -- got it! The 50mm is still an easiest to use lens for not showing distortions and errors in leveling the camera -- less drama, and easy composition. But the 40mm and even 35mm is not too far off of that and offers that extra width --- all three work, if the camera operator works 🤭 I think it a good exercise, now and then, to take out the tighter lenses to simply see and provide that perspective view. If I was to use but one lens, I am thinking 40mm or even my old-time fav the 50mm. I do have a Leica 15mm on my GX-9 for wide shots, and a Lumix 14mm -- both for MFT cameras. The wide shots of building, and trains work great with that 28mm / 30mm field of view, and you can get very close to subjects, all the while praying you held the camera correctly at the time, and did not get too close or too far to the edge with the subjects. With 28mm to 35mm one need be reminded that distortions happen. The 40mm and 50mm is pretty forgiving. Thanks for the video, Loren

    My new-to-me GX7 came with the 14-42mm. On a photo walk, I deliberately shot a subject at each of these focal lengths to see what I liked best. I saw the benefits of each depending on the subject. So, what's best focal length? Like a lawyer's advice, "it depends". So, I now have 7.5, 14, 20, and 42.5 primes for my GX7.😊

    Surely when one refers to a particular focal length one also needs to mention what system they are using (i.e. FF, APS-C, MFT) so that people can relate to what is seen in the shot (how much of the scene is captured). This is a genuine query as focal lengths of cameras can be confusing if only partial info is given. What are your thoughts George?

    It would be great that zoom lenses could fix the most common focal lengths (28mm, 35mm, 50mm and 80mm) and that you couldn't change from one to another without unlocking the lens.

  • @luyangche8278

    I did the same trick of using the kit zoom to test out focal lengths to find out focal lengths I like, before investing in prime lenses, and now I only own primes. So this is really solid advice.
    40mm was a focal length I didn't used to like, but over time it has replaced 50mm as my main focal length, and I use it for probably more than 90% of the time now. It's about as "normal" as a normal focal length gets, so it lacks any of the special sauce people like about about ultra-wides, wide angles and longer lenses. But I think it is extremely valuable to have a lens like this as my main focal length, and it has forced me to not use longer focal lengths as a crutch (like I used to with 50mm and 85mm). I like to photograph more of the mundane things around me, so having a focal length people like to consider "boring" and "mundane" definitely suits my shooting style, lol. Plus it is an extremely versatile do-it-all focal length. And paraphrasing the "Why 40mm" article I read before, it asks the question that if someone says 40mm is bad because it is an extremely boring focal length, is that actually a problem of the focal length, or the photographer's inability to make interesting photographs without resorting to more extreme focal lengths?

    U had on crop factor 2x 25mm and showed several crop factor 1.5x lenses with 50mm. Wouldn't that be around 80mm in comparison? Hones question as I am forever confused with the lenses and thought for a long time, that my 50mm Nikkor lens is best suited for street photography until I learned that *those* 50mm are meant for full frame, thus I only had a 80mm lens.

    • @drdj2626
      @drdj2626 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      LensCompression-wise, a 50mm is a 50mm, regardless of the sensor it is attached to. the difference between the image you'll see from a cropped sensor camera and a full frame one is just that the former is...cropped. I believe the idea of "a 50mm lens is best suited for street photography" comes more from lens compression than from how much info you can put inside the frame.

    • @lelandfitz1762
      @lelandfitz1762 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@drdj2626 Thanks for this info. People online are just always comparing it to the full frame times of analogue photography. I always wondered why there hasn't been a consensus of manufacturers to make it comparable. But they way you explain it, they do. I think I have to invest more time to fully understand that lol
