There $40 knives cant expect much my rat1 is the same way im thinking add an extra bronze washer to just one side to center it

Nice video, thanks! I had the same blade centering issue. I was able to improve it somewhat by doing two things. First, ensuring that the washers and pivot assembly were held together very tight while putting everything back together; and then adjusting the scale screws while applying pressure to the *open* blade. Adjusting the pivot screw didn’t help much on my particular knife. Anyway, thanks again, looking forward to checking out your other videos!

Others have had this problem also it doesn't make sense, you did everything right. I just ordered the Rat2 D2 desert tan with the black blade, with plans of putting copper scales on it, this video is really having me second-guess taking it apart.

Yes it’s quite strange eh? I was a bit confused too, might be that the scales are not perfectly flat?

The pivot is keyed in. Can you give it a 180?

R2s were all made this way. The ball joint on the liner is pressing the blade up towards the opposite liner. Open and close the blade with the ball joint in view and you'll see where Ontario could've made adjustments but I think they made these just right.

They probably tried the idea of 2 ball joints on each of the liners compensating for the reveal and the centering of the blade. I'm thinking the possibility of its functionality took a hit also when it comes to manufacturing such detail and checking each run would be costly along with possible more materials needed to assemble be it the width (length of screws.. not too much but still) I would think that the price of the Rat 2 would be much higher in this case. Also the Rat 1.

Yeah probably being cost effective remains a priority, and it’s understandable at this price point, still managing to come up with a pretty solid one

I'd go back and watch a few videos on how to center a knife. You worked backwards when trying to center it. However, you do end up with some knives that can't be centered, like my Spyderco Cat. Out of the 30 knives I have, it's the only one that I can't center.

I hope my suggestion won't come across as talking to you as if you should know better. I work in the maintenance world where screw tightening has a chief principle of being tightened in a specific way in order to ensure the most even pressure across the object. If you dont do this then the object gets torqued in weird ways and causes imbalance and off centering, sometimes making it too tough to get all the screws in. By tightening screws in a line all the pressure is put on the first screw going down the row you tightening them in,, putting a lot of torque and angle on the final screw and possibly the blade. Might I suggest choosing to work on opposite ends of the screws in a balanced order? Work furthest away from the pivot first, screw the screw in 90% of the way, then go to the screw closest to the pivot, screw that in 90% of the way. Go back to the other end where you first started but now on the next innermost hole from the outside, do the same 90% thing. Rinse and repeat, back and forth from one end to the other and back again until all screws and mostly in. Then, when you're almost all done, slowly adjust them by finally tightening the rest of the 10%, one screw at a time working from the innermost screw going outward in alternating holes, keeping the same pressure sequence in mind. I wonder if maybe this will center the blade since tensions we're even distributed. Hopefully this is of some help!

Hey thanks for the suggestion! I tried that and also the paper trick, but couldn’t get the blade to be centered..

What sort of tray are you using in this video? I need something like this as I've lost quite a few small parts. Thanks
