I recall an interview during the Olympics one year where a male tennis player won the gold medal, and the interviewer asked, "How does it feel to be the first American to win the gold medal in tennis?" to which he replied, "I'm not the first by any means, haven't Serena and Venus won like four each?"
I think it was Andy Murray who was asked about an American tennisplayer reaching some (semi) final for the first time in ages (can't remember what exactly) and he replied with 'the first MALE player'. He was genuinly annoyed that the women apparently got completely forgotten. It was a pretty cool and classy response!

They've always been cold! The time between prepping and shooting the interview is actually quite long, but I'm surprised they don't keep it on a hot plate to the side or something and have them pulled out a few minutes before shooting.

That's the way I always played. 100% or I might as well go sit on the bench. I was the only one you saw diving for shots and tuck and rolls. I'm guessing that's why I usually had the most people watching me. I miss my youth... it's definitely wasted on the young.

Her ability to recall previous matches, shows she never took any of those matches for granted or believed she was going to steam roll her opponents.
Nah nah nah there were multiple years period where she thought she was going to steamroll every player on the court with her. She even said in the interview “you’re supposed to do that”. Thats like definition of looking past your opponent but as she should! Her and Tiger came out of Cali and simply were too dominant for any human to keep up with.
Serena isn’t the greatest ever female tennis player, that’s Margaret Court who won 64 Grand Slam titles. 24 singles, 19 doubles and 21 mixed doubles grand slams. Serena won 23 singles titles, she didn’t equal or pass Court’s record.
Yet when people then try to then claim ‘oh it was a different era’ so it’s not the same yet male tennis players who played at the same time as Court like Rod Laver is still considered one of the best ever players. So you can’t have it both ways.

I’m not saying that records don’t matter, but if we are comparing two players from different times it’s incredibly difficult to just look at stats. I think the question that ultimately has to be asked is, in their prime who would win the most out of ten? I don’t watch tennis that often so I can’t answer that question. But when they are so many different factors in play it can’t just be chalked up to wins. It happens in other sports as well. People claim Max Verstappen is the best driver without equaling people like Hamilton, Senna, etc records. There’s always a debate between Lebron and MJ. You have debates between Novak and Nadal. Ronaldo and Messi. So it’s not really as simple as you make it out to be

Yeah, that was actually touching to hear. We think of her as this pure winning mindset athlete, but obviously that was a complex moment for them
I found myself wondering if Venus missed that "shot she wouldn't have missed in any other match" on purpose, so her sister could break that "Serena Slam" record. I actually expected that to be the end of the story. Maybe it was, but Venus just never admitted it to her sister.

I remember being a ball girl for her back when the Miami Open was the Sony Ericsson Open. Her and her sister were genuinely some of the nicest players I got to tend to.

If you watch "King Richard," their dad actually tried to leave them at a store and drive off because the kids were all bragging too much about Venus winning so many matches. He ended up not driving too far because their mom made him stay, but afterwards he took them home and had them watch Cinderella. The point was for them to see that she stayed humble even when she was mistreated. Their dad did a lot in terms of building their confidence, while also keeping them humble and down to earth. He wouldn't let them continue playing if they bragged a lot, which I find admirable in a parent!
“I really feel like punching you…lucky for you” 😂 I rarely watch sports but when I have it’s usually Serena in finals of Wimbledon or Australian Open. She made sport exciting to watch for me. In interviews as with this one she is so smart, funny and down to earth and exudes a confidence that is just natural not arrogant. She is one of THE greatest athletes ever regardless of gender and she really shook up the game in such a positive way. Loved this interview ❤

Serena is an absolute legend!! I was lucky enough to see her last ever Wimbledon match in 2022 and although she lost, the crowd still gave her the biggest standing ovation in honour of her greatness!!

Honestly, your questions are always humanizing to your guests. They are much different questions than any other journalist would ask that gets to actually know the guests, rather than using these famous people for clout. This has been my absolute favorite interview. I love her.
I watched this because I wasn't sure how I felt about Serena from what I saw from tennis stuff (a bit serious I guess?) but I had a suspicion that was being in the zone plus for the camera. This show is great because Sean (and the heat) get guests to really be themselves so if you want to see past the image, this is the place.
Conclusion...she's awesome. One of my favourite guests I've seen on here.

This was such a great episode, it’s so sweet of Serena to recount her memory of her first tournament and then to remember her opponent to say her name in full. That’s really sweet because it’s just nice to see a high level of respect amongst competitors at any level. Tennis is such a beautiful sport that those moments are great to remember. I loved that and the grunt 😂 how did I know that was gonna come up.
Sean is such a great interviewer, he somehow manages to have chemistry with every single guest!

Some players breathe out during the process of hitting the ball. Others tend to hold their breath right before their swing and release it after the follow through. I'm the former, but I've never grunted. haha.
It might also be affected by the acoustics of the arena and where you're sitting. It can make the sound delayed to your ears. I've never made it to the French Open, so I couldn't say.
