  • Viola Davis is one of most decorated actors of the 21st century, from the Broadway stage to Emmy- and Academy Award-winning performances in TV and film. Her memoir, "Finding Me," topped the best sellers list earlier this year, and she has a brand-new film-the historical epic, The Woman King-now playing exclusively in theaters. But how is she with spicy food? Find out as the living legend gives a master class on everything from developing characters like Annalise Keating, to nailing auditions and understanding the meaning of life.

As a 40 year old man, I have heard a lot of "chase your dream" speeches in my life, and they have hit me with varying levels of inspiration. Viola's has me suiting up in armor and getting ready to chase my dreams and slay dragons despite being a middle-aged knight. That would have been an incredible speech even without thousands of scovilles lighting her up.

I'm tearing up and honestly letting tears fall. Every word she preached spoke nothing but volumes to me, especially at the end, when she spoke about our life's journey is about finding our ideal selves. As someone who struggled with doing everything for everyone else and not having a balance of what I want and need, versus what others need and want from me. The mental health, the self-esteem issues... they hit me every day. It's hard to believe that things get better. But I did notice that I've been more positive these last few days of 2022, and here I am, listening to her wisdom within the first hour of the new years of 2023. I want to believe that things will be better for me, and that I have the strength of doing just that. Discovering who I really am, finding/rediscovering my true passions, and finding a happiness that will make me want to keep going in life. And I sincerely hope everyone else who is going through things really runs into this new year with their heads held high, and to keep getting up no matter how many times you fall.

There were a few no-noes too. Actors shouldn't always "take risks" or "make bold choices" in their portrayals. Good acting is about self-control, the results of which should be effortlessly immersive, the audience shouldn't have to do the work to believe in the character. Also, arguing with your director and writers over details of back story is very bad policy, no-one cares about the actor's method, you might get away with it if you're a Hollywood star, if not you'll probably lose work.

@@BoojayDeeth it may be an industry no-no but I still think she is exactly right. She is absolutely making the characters better and more dynamic by taking those risks and critiquing the writers and directors. And I’m sure she knows they are no-noes too the way she prefaced them by saying “I think” and “in my opinion” because even though she knows that’s the best way to get a good character, obviously it’s not always going to be welcomed. But it is so refreshing to a Black person and a woman be able to speak into those industries and ask for what she needs and be given the tools to make award winning work. I truly think if more actors afforded that opportunity, the caliber of movies and tv would be a lot better, but unfortunately it’s mostly about the bottom line and just churning out content no matter how garbage the role or portrayal is these days.

Wow, I am blown away. This just instantly became one of my favorite Hot Ones interviews of all time (right up there with Paul Rudd). Viola's answers are so fluid, she answers Sean's questions so naturally and so casually, but without being cavalier. I was glued to my screen the whole time because her answers were just so genuine, and genuinely interesting. I thought I was a good communicator, but I just witnessed what real communication looks like. She offers so many important details in each of her responses and she does it just so effortlessly, it was immensely satisfying to watch. And her answer for Sean's last question was just so amazing and perfect. I loved hearing her thoughts and opinions on the entertainment industry, and also how things operate behind the scenes. But most importantly I really feel like I truly learned something from her last answer. I'm going to have to remind myself to periodically check back at 22:13, especially when life gets heavy, to remind myself about the journey.
