  • G'day guys, today we are reacting to Pentatonix Sound Of Silence live. PTX are always so great live, Matt was so great in this version. The drums surprised me a little.

    I can only think that there is something written into their contract that says they must allow the local drummers on set. With all due respect I can't imagine PTX asking for them. I know when they played with the orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, Scott made some comment about "who would not play the Bowl when invited?". This is slightly different. Don't want to be harsh either, but we want our guys to show what they can do.

      yeah but this was live and outdoors. Sound disperses differently, and I think the beatboxing would have gotten lost. Obviously in the recording you can pump up his mic, but for the live audience this wouldn't have been possible.

    I'm also torn on the drums. I don't think it was their choice. And I'm sort of tired of the fact that whenever they have a TV appearance like this, they are so often either pushed into the background or they just force instruments on them. I mean what is the point of having an a cappella group as a guest then?

    I agree. They have a Hollywood Bowl concert I've seen where they had an orchestra. When ever they have backing like that it loses I love so much about them.
    Also I think we are all I need of a PTX week, including you! Their new original is out and yes I would love to see you do some of the older stuff you haven't. I know I've bugged you with suggestions before so I'll refrain unless you want ideas!

    @lurker1107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You had the same reaction as all other Pentaholics, we never like the extra instruments unless it's Kevin playing the cello. Kevin even had a pad under him, and I'm sure it's to capture his stomping, so I don't understand the drums, except they were there for show. There are other live performances where they start a capella and then a band joins in and I always get mad, lol. Example, Wicked 20th Anniversary, Kennedy Center Honors and American Music Awards performance of Star Wars. Still worth watching, but be prepared to have the same reaction to the instruments. Lol

    I can't help that thinking they didn't look very happy during the performance. I wonder if they were somehow "forced" on the issue of the drums. I doubt any real PTX fans were impressed. One of the most powerful things about them is the fact that they sing a capella!

    Listening to past live performances, sometimes Kevin gets drowned out. This song particularly needs the percussion to be strong.. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking that might be why. They are all superb, but I just can't get over how strong Kirstin's voice is! She's always on point. Matt...what else can you say...he's not human! 😁 Sublime...

    we don't know what that was all about either, maybe the jimmy kimmel show just had a group of drummers in the back and promised them a chance to play but we the pentaholics always hate it when other people try to put instruments behind them! we love kevin we don't like anything that makes him obsolete! they did sound good, also they put out a brand new song yesterday written and lead by Kirstin. i was surprised that you didn't do that one, also home free put out an audio version of a new song as well. that one not so great as their videos are always better!

  • @joebarnhart4460

    Don't sweat the drums. They only began with Kirstin's part so you got to hear up thru Matt with only Kevin's beatboxing. If PTX is gonna be mainstream, you have to get used to them being backed by instruments once in a while. Did you see the Star Wars tribute? They were backed by an entire f-ing ORCHESTRA in that collab. Don't sweat it -- it's just PTX growing up and stretching the boundaries.

  • @vidsorama2

    I don't think that the drums were their idea. That show is a big deal. He has had them on the show several times so if the show's production wanted drums, I can't think of them refusing. They sounded great to me before and with the drums. I was just happy that they were booked on the show. Major exposure.

  • @grazynawikert-unger2122

    Since it was an open air performance I think the drums were there to enhance the effect. In the studio recording, Kevin did these effects with his foot, as well as in indoor performances, but in the open space it might not be enough. It's just my opinion.

    • @supposedly1-2
      @supposedly1-2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      idk you could hear kevin pretty well in the first part, i just wish people would let them do what they do without trying to throw instruments in behind them, making kevin obsolete isn't ok. now on the bbmas performance last night, which is on kelly clarksons ytube page, they had sheila e playing drums so he played cello and sang but he was only doing that so it was good!

    • @grazynawikert-unger2122
      @grazynawikert-unger2122 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@supposedly1-2 You could actually hear Kevin well. But I don't think people are forcing PTX to do anything. This is a Pentatonix show and I think the last sentence is theirs. I also don't like when instruments come into their performance because it spoils the whole effect.

    Same thing sort of happened this last week, when they shared the opening number on the Bill Board music awards show.
    Kelly Clarkson, is a great singer, and she toured with them, but other than a few very quick solos sprinkled through the performance, they became basically backup singers for Kelly, with a band drowning out much of their vocals, and then at the end of the song they brought out someone, (didn't recognize the artist), playing the drums, which frankly I would have preferred to have heard Kevin do his thing instead...
    I know they were doing it remotely, and the producers were trying to put a show together, with no live audience, trying to digitally fake all of them on stage, but although every performer performed very well, it was just a sad mix. It seems some artists get it and just become a highlighted sixth voice in the group, while other artists and producers just can't let go of the perceived need of having a band and backup singers behind them. (Not putting down backup singers, without them, many artists would sound very flat and frankly a bit boring, but you pay big bucks to see the main artists...)

    I really didn't care for addition of the drums. Acapella isn't Acapella when you add instruments. I agree, that covid has really messed 2020 up, but on the other hand, if it wasn't for Covid, I wouldn't have started watching videos on TH-cam. Thanks Pat, for your videos/channel.

    Out door arena, hard to project the sound of the drums without the acoustics? Or maybe Kevin wasn’t well that day? They didn’t try to hide anything ,they very easily could have placed them behind set and no one would have known. I say they probably needed a assist because of the outdoor venue.

    99.9% of the time Pentatonix performs on American TV shows there's a drummer on stage. It's a grave insult to Kevin! I don't believe Pentatonix has any choice in that decision and I blame their label for allowing it to happen. It's infuriating and I get so upset every time I have to watch it. Rarely does a TV show even set the soundboard correctly for acapella. Networks that have experience airing entertainment live like Disney or NBC (who hosted The Sing-Off) usually give us very good sound settings for performances by them, but sometimes NBC puts an entire Orchestra behind them or hides a drummer in the wings.
    Performances on shows themed around excellence in music always have sound engineers with the skill set that allows them to the set the soundboard properly and give the correct microphones to the right members of an acapella group. I really liked their performance when the academy honored the Bee Gees, and when Motown was being honored and they sang with Smokey Robinson. But daytime TV and the late night talk shows shows consistently have the soundboard set horribly for an acapella performance (and possibly the wrong mics given to the members). And we always have that worry, no matter what kind of show it is, that they're going to put a drummer on that stage, drowning out Kevin. I get both excited and cringe when I hear they're going to be on a TV show unless it's a music awards show. Then I hold out some hope. But look at how strong the Rhythm Section was on The Sing-Off which was aired on NBC! There was no problem hearing the bass and percussion. So why is it universally an issue for every show that they perform on? We know it's possible to set the soundboard correctly because we saw it done for years on The Sing-Off. And that was for multiple groups over 4 years. I thought this was going to be an excellent performance and was so shocked when I saw those drums coming out.
