Pinay teen turns heads after wearing traditional Filipiniana gown to prom

- It’s a right of passage for teens across the United States, with high school girls spending hundreds of dollars and countless hours to find the perfect dress to stand out at the prom.
But for Houston high school student Tricia Jane Asuncion, prom was an opportunity to break from American tradition and instead, represent her heritage - with a Filipiniana outfit complete with a Pamaypay.
And she certainly stood out. Classy and Fancy. Very cool.

F.Y.I. Saying something like, “Classy AF”....is NOT classy!
Other countries are frustrated if they see their national dress wear by a non native but we Filipinos are proud whenever we see a foreigner use anything from our country it's just the intentionon how they wear or use it, we don't discriminate them instead we just love spreading our rich culture.
I guess your comment is about the "two" invthis video that says, the Chinese red dress is inappropriate for non-Chinese ?
I think those 2 are "highly indoctrinated " by LEFTISM....
I've been with chinese people , and like us(Filipinos) they are happy to see their cultural heritage from westerners.....
@@studentoflife2484 any native is happy to see that their culture is being spread around the world. The only time it feels wrong is when it is sexualized too much.
And besides, I think there are more non-natives being offended for the natives than the natives themselves.
I met this American Karen in our group chat get mad at me for wearing a Kimono, but the Japanese person in our GC was really happy that it looked good on me.
@@IvanIsYda_ exactly.....the people from which culture the dress or costumes are from, are actually JOYFUL to see their culture......

those chinese dresses (sorry I forget the real name o them) are beautiful and elegant. I watched a video on the last guy in hong kong who makes them by hand tailor made and its very hard to get the dress to fit the female form perfectly. A lot of precision dressmaking skills go into it.
for prom, I feel like it was wrong. Prom is not a cultural event, it feels like she's treating it as a costume
@@mahi93162 Well prom is not a fancy dress thing, so I think you are misinterpreting it. Prom is where you put a lot of thought into wearing something that looks amazing and makes you look amazing. So I think in this case she is definitely not mocking but rather choosing it for its elegance. I think if you were chinese you should feel proud.
But, even if it was a fancy dress situation (which it wasnt) does it mean its mocking? Ive chosen an indian wedding sari to go to a fancy dress night in, I dont think it was mocking and the fact I had to learn how to wear a sari gives me insight into one part of their culture is pretty cool I think.
Im from australia, and if someone wore our national dress of thongs and a cork hat to a fancy dress party Id be like cool, but where did you find that cork hat hahaha. Look people just need to chill.
@@mahi93162 where else would they wear if, would you rather her wear it to an after party where if could be dirtied and disrespected. I actually can see where you're coming from but I think prom would be a great time to wear it to show off how much you appreciate their culture (especially considering the other not as good options I pointed out earlier)
Yes agree, as a Chinese I think it is wonderful to have someone of another race wear the traditional Chinese cheongsam. I have never heard it being criticised in the past and won't be surprised if it is a sick person against it or even a non chinese trying to cause mischief because of the anonymity of the Internet.
As someone who's part Chinese (I'm also part Viet), I find no offense in wearing the cheongsam. The non-Chinese girl didn't sexualize it or mock it. She saw it and thought it was beautiful. That's cultural appreciation, not appropriation, to me.
Very well put, appreciation not appropriation. I'm not even sure what appropriation is since the US has many different cultural influences.

It’s cool seeing kids be proud of their family and culture nowadays. Very refreshing compared to when I was in high school. I graduated in 2006.
So proud looking at here...
Proud Pinay here❤❤❤
Sa totoo lang ang damit ng bansa natin ay napakaganda sa babae.
True! Napaka classy tignan at malinis. Ewan ko basta ako din nagagandahan din ako😂❤
Yeah. Barong is kinda cringe as men's attire ngl. Saying that as a Bisaya. The Eastern changshan-style cut for barong looks a bit better compared to the usual Western dress shirt cut.
So if a certain style dress doesn’t come from your culture, what do you need to know in order to wear it and not get cancelled? Seriously 😭
Maybe just don't wear it. Or have someone from that culture dress you and explain all the meanings, or research all the meanings so you don't feel others are lame for being protective of their culture as if their culture is a thing to be put on and taken off at will. That's the actual, genuine answer to your question.
@@HabitualLover what’s the point? It’s absolutely stupid to prove to people that you are “educated” once you wear it. People would get mad at the girl anyway, it really doesn’t matter.
@@HabitualLover that's dumb. Just do you. Celebrate whatever culture you like. Just don't disrespect! Im Moroccan but was raised in the west. I know nothing about "my culture," but since it's in my blood does that make it okay to wear their clothes? Is it the knowledge you need, or the blood, or both? Its too confusing to make any sense
Just get out of America and that's it
Just ignore the haters and wear it knowing it is beautiful. Spread the love of it and love yourself in the process.
Thats great, that dress is very decent, classy and Filipino.
she is absolutely STUNNING! i love the fact that she’s in touch with her culture at her age!
Love it! Everyone looked ultra stylish. It is wonderful to nod to your heritage and culture.
"Turns head" I thought she's going to spin her head like exorcism😂.
Lmao whatt
@@jiajiey read the title! The wording(turns head) is somewhat confusing, especially for me that don't speak in English that much. I misunderstood it. They could use simple vocab like attract, captivate, or fascinate.
@demon slayer but that's not what the phrase means.
@@demonslayer4951 It's a basic idiom
Honestly, if I see that dress in a store I wouldn't guess that it's a tradtional dress. It looks like a dress we would normally wear to prom
I am happy for you that you want to still be proud of your Filipino-ness, instead of Americanizing! Good job, Kabayan!
Americanizing...that’s a new one
Fellow Proud Filipino here! Well done young lady 😍❤️
Wow ! Huge respect to this girl , she is amazing 👏👏👏
There is always the high school girl who breaks her ankle before prom, Im glad this generation is doing an impact.
Absolutely beautiful, gorgeous, and classy!
I want to see the Cameroonian outfit since I’m Cameroonian
She looked absolutely Stunning!
Very beautiful and eleagent🥰
Go girl!!! Show the world our cultural heritage. You look beautiful. Salamat.
I remember a group of girls at my school did this and they suggested that I participate. They looked absolutely stunning in their sarees and ao dais as I believe they are called. I ended up just wearing a normal prom dress because what was I supposed to wear? Lederhosen? Dirndl? I would have looked like a bar wench lol.
May I ask where you got your dress. I want to get one for the International Festival of my son’s school. Thank you.
Hi Hazel! I am in the Philippines right now. I know someone in here really do well in making Filipiniana. It's even being imported to western countries thiugh. You can send me a personal message for the info.
Cultural wear is timeliness style. Especially when wore by the people of that culture.
She looks great, you can tell she was feeling the energy of her ancestors.
Nice..! Dalagang Pilipina in a foreign land.. Be proud of your cultural heritage guys..! 💚❤💛👍👍😎
Absolutely lovely wearing the Filipiana gown and Barong tagalog..Mabuhay ang Pilipino.
Wow I love it and that's makes u stands out among others..
I feel that the term “cultural appropriation” is another example of “segregation”. For me we are one race: “the human race” and thus, I don’t think that embracing the fashion of a certain culture makes anyone disrespectful. As a matter of fact, I find it very respectful bc one is stating that one is liking and embracing that part of their heritage. For me this is a way to put aside the differences.
For me the ppl that “barks” culture appropriation are unaware that we as a specie are meant to blend.
I get where u are coming from, but cultural appropriation isn’t just wearing another cultures dress embracing the fashion of a culture is culture appreciation which means that the person wearing the dress knows where it came from and knows the background as wears it right. Cultural appropriation is when u wear a cultures fashion simply for its “aesthetic” and u don’t know the background, also if u sexualize it, or mock the culture too. Like the ppl in this video wearing qipao(Chinese traditional dress) that wouldn’t be wrong if they wore it respectfully and knew the background, but in the group photo they took 1:34 u can see that they are all mocking Chinese culture by doing that pose, also the girl(keziah) the slits of her “qipao” was rlly high up, which is kinda offensive since the purpose of the dress is to show modesty. But I’m saying that if u respect the culture and wear the cultures fashion CORRECTLY (also if u don’t go mocking the culture)then that obviously isn’t cultural appropriation.

@@rakcityequine2.0 u literally did not read what I said at all lmao u CAN wear other culture’s clothes just not if ur sexualizing it or mocking the culture and if u RESPECT the culture
Good for you girl., your beautiful with the outfit.
All this does is make me want to learn more about the Filipino culture as I do not know anyone Filipino personally. ❤️❤️❤️
So thank you
How is this not a thing? I mean it would be amazing to see how diverse the United States really is through PROM! 😍
you made me really proud...very nice!
I read it as teen turns her head in a dress and thought there was something up with turning your head in the dress. I dumb y'all 💃💀
Nah, I thought something similar at first. 😅
😂
"I dumb" 💀✋🏾
Congrats and I salute you girl!
The Off-White dress worn by Tricia was exquisite, but I wouldn’t have recognized it as a dress from a specific culture. Regardless of any characteristics of the dress, I can’t imagine that anyone would dislike such an incredibly beautiful & well designed, gown. She looked so fabulous in every photo & designers should take notice of this magnificent dress!
I am happy to see young Filipinos wearing the traditional formal clothes. I hope it catches on more because it really warms my heart with pride.
So pretty...
Love it 😇😇😇
If I like the dress I found at the thrift shop, I will wear it no matter what.. obviously it ended up in a thrift store cause that person didn’t want it anymore... so if you can’t appreciate that... idk what to tell you. Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure 🤩
I didn't get a chance to attend a prom due to Corona Virus. We already practiced when it got cancelled
She looks so pretty and that dress is stunning!
So beautiful!! This is AWESOME. Thank you for doing this.
Amazing dress, beautiful girl.
She so classy
Imagine having a prom 😭 graduating highschool with no prom

Proud of you girl representing our beautiful Filipiniana gown of our dear country Philippines
not only is your Filipiniana stunning, your prom date's Barong is equally as stunning. you guys sourced excellent quality Piña linen with amazing embroidery. Should've thought about this in my senior ball 17 years ago! (the equivalent of "prom" in New Zealand). Would've been great if I rocked a Barong and my date rocked a Chut Thai and we pulled up at the ball in a limo with hot adobo, kare kare, tom yum, and satay on deck instead of lame champagne
