Exactly right, Dave's going for 'real' over 'correct', this offends people who put a ton of their energy into correctness because they are ultimately frustrated trying to achieve that. Yeah, and that first redit was odd, because all of what I've seen from you is almost ALL sharing your knowledge you have for free. I am ready to admit fault here for my comments made, and frankly I don't have enough info on your work to really be making any assessments on you. My apologies. Massive revelation on delaying one side of a stereo guitar channel by 0.3 ms…my goodness the sound got sooooo much warmer I couldn’t believe it.
You can go longer on the delay. With headphones sub Ms is audible and with speakers 5 to 10 feet apart low delay times below 5 Ms work. But for gigs with the speaker 20 feet or more apart, 10 to 30 Ms are times to give a listen to.

I spend more time in the studio, but from time to time I mix live for some bands I worked with in the studio. Since the beginning of your blog and before many of the current social networks became popular, your interest in teaching the experiences lived in the first level of the world of professional audio was always noticed, no matter who they were or how big or small were the gigs of those who followed you and consulted. I always took away something useful from each of your blog entries at a time when obtaining information about our profession was much more difficult. It is not necessary for me to tell you, but as soon as you are interested and want to do it, keep doing that great work in parallel that you have been doing with teaching, with the generosity and desire that characterize you that many people from all over the world respect you and care what you have to say. I think its very brave and fearless of you to do these Reddit videos and to do it with such good humour is admirable. I've been a professional FoH engineer since 1980 and have issues with confronting criticism, even if it is objective, critical and I can learn from it. I couldn’t agree more that this industry needs to be a fun one and is not medical science. However, there are many in this industry that don’t see it that way and probably wouldn’t hold down a job anywhere else for that matter.

OMFG! This is going to be shared with my students as we cover 'audio disinformation' in the courses I teach. Last time I mixed outdoors for a few thousand people, I was capped at 85dBA at 20 metres from FOH. At the mix position, I was measuring around 95. Nobody would be there if it were even averaging 120dB!! We have sound caps in bigger venues in Toronto, Canada of less than 100dBA. 130dB? Maybe, if you were to glue your head to a speaker. My two cents worth. Cheers!
Dave mixed RHCP at Arco Arena a famously awful sounding venue, went when I was in high school expecting bad sound. Not even much of a RHCP fan, went for the Mars Volta and Hella at the time, and the show sounded phenomenal. It blew me away and I enjoyed RHCP more than I thought I would. Come to find that memorable show was mixed by Dave only recently. Would love to hear the critics mix in Arco Arena (RIP).
Their current sound engineer is okay, but I was very far from being blown away by the sound, at least last summer when they performed at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA, with Thundercat and The Strokes. The audio rig itself seemed good. It consisted of 20-some per hang d&b Audiotechnik GSL for main and side fills with 3 sets of 12-ish KSL delay hangs and some sl-sub subwoofers, a line of 6 or so on the ground and 10 per side flown. Front fills looked like d&b V7p. This equipment came from eighth day sound, based on the badges stuck to the speakers. On stage, monitors were d&b V and M series for Thundercat and The strokes, but RHCP switched to Clair Global Cohesion series for some reason. The FOH system was quite good in the high frequencies, and very clear, but bass was nonexistent, making it sound harsh/boring in some cases. I almost never have this issue with d&b systems, in fact, those are some of my favorite live sound subs! Also, since we had floor seating, there was the problem of sound echoing off the stands in behind us, but that’s basically unavoidable in a baseball stadium.

Absolutely agree!! Dave has given insight into a lot of common issues faced by engineers. If you don't like his methods, you're at least thinking about them and how you can do even better. For me, one of these pieces of gold was doing a stereo mix for subs. What a game changer!! We all need to keep thinking, experimenting and evolving like Dave! :)
Dave the fact that you share your knowledge is appreciated here. The fact that you have a members area seems to bother some because it would cost them something. Seems this has a side of jealousy not criticism. I have done FOH for lots of gigs inside and out. I have audience's leaving venue say great sound could have been a bit louder and the individual behind him said good sound just a bit too loud. You can never achieve 100% delighted but we try! Opinions: everybody has one. On the side. I've listened to your videos. And they have taught me a whole lot. I've been doing sound since the late 80's. A fellow engineer once said. "The day that you don't learn something. Is a wasted day." And I continue in that stride.
And how many mega watts would it take to 130db at red rock ? I think you may be more hopeful about the abilities many to want to grow and learn . Experimentation must be done to broaden the knowledge base . I have found knowing why some thing does not work is as important as knowing what does. For me learning how to improve the wheel is more productive than reinventing it.
7:32 While sound system engineers do their best, they also can make mistakes. I recently worked on a system with 2 critical flaws. #1, it's an LCR rig with a dual 18" sub for each cluster. Some people were complaining about how there was no bottom end. I turned off the L/R subs and the mix came to life. The engineer wasn't thinking about cancellation due to time differences. I now have a mono subgroup feeding the center sub only and the response is much more even across the venue as a result. The other flaw was one of the installers wired one of the drivers backwards so it was actually sucking some of the midrange out of the mix.. Correcting that mistake then made the existing DSP programming completely inappropriate. The DSPs are very old and the data port on one isn't working, while an output from another didn't work at all so I need to replace them. A mistake that was made literally 20 years ago wouldn't have been discovered if I hadn't run pink noise through the system while wandering around the room listening to it. Correcting it caused a snowball affect that changed EVERYTHING!
Dave Rat you are the best. Even though you're not Dave "Rat" ahhaha...just learned it today when you explained it in the video. But I often think of this "rat" metaphore and what it stands for...rats are known for their adaptability to the most extreme conditions. I find this as quite a strong metaphore and also a very cool name because of that for an audio company where you always have to adapt to all sorts of things (weather, different people...). Love it! Thank you and hey, I made 5 videos sharing info based on the reddit comments, so for me it was kind of fun and hopefully interesting and helpful to others.
regardless of the 130dB thing bein real or not, I personally dislike it if the sound's loud enough for me to need hearing protection... and that's at around 90-95dB(A) and at 100dB(A) everyone would HAVE TO use hearing protection because it'll damage your hearing within 15-20 minutes. If it's at FOH that loud, I can't imagine how loud it's at front of the stage. Hearing protection alters the sound hugely, so there's an issue of firstly making amazing mix, then playing it so loud everyone has to wear hearing protection and ruin the mix. "But just listen to it without, it's your choice!" sure, freedoms are great, but stupidity isn't. To ask for an audience to either ruin their hearing or screw up the sound isn't very nice so I would avoid that personally... I do get it in a way, but I'd use more delay lines so I wouldn't have to throw the sound far away and have disproportionate level of sound at near the source and just before the next delay line but it would be more even. We don't have spare ears, let's enjoy them as long as we can and let's try to consider everyone else's hearing as well.
A lot of relevant perspectives. One could also apply that to driving fast or roller coasters being dangerous or too much of an adrenaline rush or whatever. Conversely there are the aspects of skiers knees and tennis players elbow skateboarders entire body musician's ears boxers noses and so on. Wherein a % of people are willing to or desire to take risks and accept the consequences. I know for me personally that my ears have taken a beating over the years maybe not unlike the body of a race car driver, And that was a price I was gladly willing to pay in order to reach the levels of success and happiness and adventure that I was able to attain. No pain no gain and there's nothing wrong with being super safe and cautious and also that might not be exciting enough for significant percentage of the population I accept and respect those that are cautious and they play an important role in life and living and friends as well as I accept and respect those that push things to the limits beyond anything I would do myself as those are also important people with aspects beneficial to life and living on this planet. And you and I fall somewhere in the middle in different places. The rock shows and drag races and air shows, loud sounds are kind of part of the experience to be expected and often desired by attendees

I did some work on signal processing (beamforming, source direction determination and blind source separation). Audio is the most complex signal there is to work with. No other signal have 120dB amplitude and 20 to 20K range. I'm serious about sound and that's why I love your videos!

They can’t know venue limitations, electrical limitations or any of the engineering and thought that went Into a show. They only think they know how something should sound because they herd it that way in thier car or crappy Bose Bluetooth speaker. The guy knocking you and a high-end L'Acoustics rig 'cuz he was, in fact, slamming the venue limiters....LOL! Also great to hear you mention about the "ole' school mid-air overheads" thing, tbh I stole it from Dave Jerden but used tight underheads ever since and the results have been great. The old school guy comment gave me a solid chuckle. If there has been one person on this platform who is actively testing gear and learning and maybe more importantly, showing how you can do that too. It has been you. That's what got me hooked on this channel in the first place.
Love your tone throughout these videos. Very relaxed and non confrontational. I just feel like you could be a lot more specific and technical when responding. For example the comment knocking the old rat trap boxes. I was expecting you to say something like, " my old systems were far from perfect but it was a learning process for me. I was trying to make the best system possible with the knowledge and resources I had at the time. Each generation improved on the last and while they certainly pale in comparison to the gear I have now they were fine for the time and places that I used them. " I mean it's an absurd criticism. I've gone to venues that have old peavy and community sound systems and those sound awful too. I doubt your old stuff sounds worse than those. I mean this guy is talking about 20+ year old speakers. I remember my old tr series jbls from that era. They sound nothing like the srx stuff I use now. They did the job though and they were better than the other cheaper stuff of the day.
Thank you! Yeah, that did not come to mind but I did post a link to the evolution of the rat trap, so in a way yes, I agree with and like that response. At the time, the rat trap was what I believe to be, the absolute loudest, highest density full range pa available with amazing control. Subs on an aux, tweeters on an aux 2x15, 2x10,2", 1" in a 9.5 cu ft box. Unheard of density and they were designed to form line arrays before line arrays were a thing We still use the subs that I designed in 1988 and pearl jam still uses the sidefill version of the rat trap. I like to share info of use and to be honest, whether the rat traps were ahead of their time or just another home made box won't be determined in a post. Thank you djsparky!
The 130db reading may have come from a phone app if it was in the right era for that to have been a thing. Many SPL phone apps must be calibrated before they give a somewhat correct reading. I have been loving all of your videos you have been posting over the last few years because it feels like the aricles I used to read in live sound magazine 20 years ago.

I love people who use their shitty cellphone microphones with an app to give authoritative opinions on SPL. Calibrated SPL meters cost big money for a reason, Einstein! Real sound guys understand that you will never know everything and that you can learn something from anyone with experience in the industry.

Especially at mix. Let's do the math, if it's 130 db atmix position and mix is 100 feet away from the PA, then 1/2 the distance should be 6 db louder. 50ft 136 25ft 142 12.5ft 148 6.25 ft 154 3.125 ft (1 meter) 160 db So, we need to start with a pa that can continuously output 160db. Oh my
The job of making the band sound good is a impossible job. There are so many ways to do this and there are even more ways people think it should be done. No one’s perfect. People who criticize others “ think” they are better then someone else however if you are a good mixer you wouldn’t criticize others because your next show might run into problems that might lead to negative reviews. Dave is making theses videos for educational purposes. This is his way of doing things. If you don’t like what he says and does things why do you watch. This is Dave’s perspective that he has learned though the years and is showing what he thinks is right. To the ones that give negative reviews, where are your videos, would love to see how things are supposed to be done. You don’t spend over 20 years with a top touring and not know what you are doing. I my case I get a lot of information out of these videos. I might not agree with everything Dave says but I do learn from Dave’s teaching and that’s what it’s all about. It’s only one man’s opinion and if you can take away some good points, perfect. Thanks Dave.

I find it fascinating that people are commenting that they don’t understand your ideas. As a monitor engineer I strive to understand the meaning behind the words that are said. I’ve tried the panning of the two kick mics and the Bass DI and bass mic. It was very effective at the show I did it at. You have to listen and think when people talk.
You must be getting good if that many become jealous! Whatever all of this, what I get from Maestro Dave is he’s sharing knowledge positively and seems to care about the outcome in music. The music. Music is not symmetrical. Paintings are not all square. Mixers are musicians, or should become.

Back in 1983 when I was providing sound for a tent with a laser show at the US Festival, and chatting with Steve Wozniak, one of the founders of Apple, he told me the exact same thing. That if we kept the name rat we'd never be successful. 40 years later I have 25 full-time employees I provide sound systems for some of the largest rock bands in the world, provide all the sound for Coachella festival and many other huge festivals, have done a few dozen laps around the planet Earth and been on every continent except for one and have a lifestyle where I surf on a daily basis hang out with friends and run a sound company, get invited to speak at AES, Namm and more high level events than I can remember and all the while sharing knowledge I wish others had shared with me on TH-cam I think I'm perfectly happy and I'll keep the rat name and accept that respect will never come my way Oh, and Rat stands for reliable audio technogy 😃😃😃😃

Side note: FINALLY got a virtual soundcheck set up at home and am playing around with the x32. Massive revelation on delaying one side of a stereo guitar channel by 0.3 ms…my goodness the sound got sooooo much warmer I couldn’t believe it.
You can go longer on the delay. With headphones sub Ms is audible and with speakers 5 to 10 feet apart low delay times below 5 Ms work. But for gigs with the speaker 20 feet or more apart, 10 to 30 Ms are times to give a listen to.

I am remiss to catgorize an entire latform based on the actions of a few. And perhaps the venting of opinions may seem frivolous but also look at the bigger picture of 10s of thousands of people reading their comments and the responses, may be a net positive.

I spend more time in the studio, but from time to time I mix live for some bands I worked with in the studio. Since the beginning of your blog and before many of the current social networks became popular, your interest in teaching the experiences lived in the first level of the world of professional audio was always noticed, no matter who they were or how big or small were the gigs of those who followed you and consulted. I always took away something useful from each of your blog entries at a time when obtaining information about our profession was much more difficult. It is not necessary for me to tell you, but as soon as you are interested and want to do it, keep doing that great work in parallel that you have been doing with teaching, with the generosity and desire that characterize you that many people from all over the world respect you and care what you have to say. OMFG! This is going to be shared with my students as we cover 'audio disinformation' in the courses I teach. Last time I mixed outdoors for a few thousand people, I was capped at 85dBA at 20 metres from FOH. At the mix position, I was measuring around 95. Nobody would be there if it were even averaging 120dB!! We have sound caps in bigger venues in Toronto, Canada of less than 100dBA. 130dB? Maybe, if you were to glue your head to a speaker. My two cents worth. Cheers!

Dave mixed RHCP at Arco Arena a famously awful sounding venue, went when I was in high school expecting bad sound. Not even much of a RHCP fan, went for the Mars Volta and Hella at the time, and the show sounded phenomenal. It blew me away and I enjoyed RHCP more than I thought I would. Come to find that memorable show was mixed by Dave only recently. Would love to hear the critics mix in Arco Arena (RIP).

They do care about their sound
Their current sound engineer is okay, but I was very far from being blown away by the sound, at least last summer when they performed at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA, with Thundercat and The Strokes. The audio rig itself seemed good. It consisted of 20-some per hang d&b Audiotechnik GSL for main and side fills with 3 sets of 12-ish KSL delay hangs and some sl-sub subwoofers, a line of 6 or so on the ground and 10 per side flown. Front fills looked like d&b V7p. This equipment came from eighth day sound, based on the badges stuck to the speakers. On stage, monitors were d&b V and M series for Thundercat and The strokes, but RHCP switched to Clair Global Cohesion series for some reason. The FOH system was quite good in the high frequencies, and very clear, but bass was nonexistent, making it sound harsh/boring in some cases. I almost never have this issue with d&b systems, in fact, those are some of my favorite live sound subs! Also, since we had floor seating, there was the problem of sound echoing off the stands in behind us, but that’s basically unavoidable in a baseball stadium.

And how many mega watts would it take to 130db at red rock ? I think you may be more hopeful about the abilities many to want to grow and learn . Experimentation must be done to broaden the knowledge base . I have found knowing why some thing does not work is as important as knowing what does. For me learning how to improve the wheel is more productive than reinventing it.

7:32 While sound system engineers do their best, they also can make mistakes. I recently worked on a system with 2 critical flaws. #1, it's an LCR rig with a dual 18" sub for each cluster. Some people were complaining about how there was no bottom end. I turned off the L/R subs and the mix came to life. The engineer wasn't thinking about cancellation due to time differences. I now have a mono subgroup feeding the center sub only and the response is much more even across the venue as a result. The other flaw was one of the installers wired one of the drivers backwards so it was actually sucking some of the midrange out of the mix.. Correcting that mistake then made the existing DSP programming completely inappropriate. The DSPs are very old and the data port on one isn't working, while an output from another didn't work at all so I need to replace them.
A mistake that was made literally 20 years ago wouldn't have been discovered if I hadn't run pink noise through the system while wandering around the room listening to it. Correcting it caused a snowball affect that changed EVERYTHING!

But I often think of this "rat" metaphore and what it stands for...rats are known for their adaptability to the most extreme conditions. I find this as quite a strong metaphore and also a very cool name because of that for an audio company where you always have to adapt to all sorts of things (weather, different people...). Love it!

Thank you and hey, I made 5 videos sharing info based on the reddit comments, so for me it was kind of fun and hopefully interesting and helpful to others.
regardless of the 130dB thing bein real or not, I personally dislike it if the sound's loud enough for me to need hearing protection... and that's at around 90-95dB(A) and at 100dB(A) everyone would HAVE TO use hearing protection because it'll damage your hearing within 15-20 minutes. If it's at FOH that loud, I can't imagine how loud it's at front of the stage.
Hearing protection alters the sound hugely, so there's an issue of firstly making amazing mix, then playing it so loud everyone has to wear hearing protection and ruin the mix.
"But just listen to it without, it's your choice!" sure, freedoms are great, but stupidity isn't. To ask for an audience to either ruin their hearing or screw up the sound isn't very nice so I would avoid that personally...
I do get it in a way, but I'd use more delay lines so I wouldn't have to throw the sound far away and have disproportionate level of sound at near the source and just before the next delay line but it would be more even.
We don't have spare ears, let's enjoy them as long as we can and let's try to consider everyone else's hearing as well.
A lot of relevant perspectives. One could also apply that to driving fast or roller coasters being dangerous or too much of an adrenaline rush or whatever.
Conversely there are the aspects of skiers knees and tennis players elbow skateboarders entire body musician's ears boxers noses and so on. Wherein a % of people are willing to or desire to take risks and accept the consequences.
I know for me personally that my ears have taken a beating over the years maybe not unlike the body of a race car driver, And that was a price I was gladly willing to pay in order to reach the levels of success and happiness and adventure that I was able to attain.
No pain no gain and there's nothing wrong with being super safe and cautious and also that might not be exciting enough for significant percentage of the population
I accept and respect those that are cautious and they play an important role in life and living and friends as well as I accept and respect those that push things to the limits beyond anything I would do myself as those are also important people with aspects beneficial to life and living on this planet.
And you and I fall somewhere in the middle in different places.
The rock shows and drag races and air shows, loud sounds are kind of part of the experience to be expected and often desired by attendees

I did some work on signal processing (beamforming, source direction determination and blind source separation). Audio is the most complex signal there is to work with. No other signal have 120dB amplitude and 20 to 20K range. I'm serious about sound and that's why I love your videos!

For example the comment knocking the old rat trap boxes. I was expecting you to say something like, " my old systems were far from perfect but it was a learning process for me. I was trying to make the best system possible with the knowledge and resources I had at the time. Each generation improved on the last and while they certainly pale in comparison to the gear I have now they were fine for the time and places that I used them. "
I mean it's an absurd criticism. I've gone to venues that have old peavy and community sound systems and those sound awful too. I doubt your old stuff sounds worse than those.

At the time, the rat trap was what I believe to be, the absolute loudest, highest density full range pa available with amazing control. Subs on an aux, tweeters on an aux
2x15, 2x10,2", 1" in a 9.5 cu ft box.
Unheard of density and they were designed to form line arrays before line arrays were a thing
We still use the subs that I designed in 1988 and pearl jam still uses the sidefill version of the rat trap.
I like to share info of use and to be honest, whether the rat traps were ahead of their time or just another home made box won't be determined in a post.

The 130db reading may have come from a phone app if it was in the right era for that to have been a thing. Many SPL phone apps must be calibrated before they give a somewhat correct reading. I have been loving all of your videos you have been posting over the last few years because it feels like the aricles I used to read in live sound magazine 20 years ago.
It always cracks me up when someone whips out their phone and just declares the 125dB reading factual without any self doubt.

I mixed loud for a long time…. And that was 110-115 max…for metal bands….I don’t no anybody who has or can mix at 130 db…
Especially at mix.
Let's do the math, if it's 130 db atmix position and mix is 100 feet away from the PA, then 1/2 the distance should be 6 db louder.

So, we need to start with a pa that can continuously output 160db. Oh my
The job of making the band sound good is a impossible job. There are so many ways to do this and there are even more ways people think it should be done. No one’s perfect. People who criticize others “ think” they are better then someone else however if you are a good mixer you wouldn’t criticize others because your next show might run into problems that might lead to negative reviews. Dave is making theses videos for educational purposes. This is his way of doing things. If you don’t like what he says and does things why do you watch. This is Dave’s perspective that he has learned though the years and is showing what he thinks is right. To the ones that give negative reviews, where are your videos, would love to see how things are supposed to be done. You don’t spend over 20 years with a top touring and not know what you are doing. I my case I get a lot of information out of these videos. I might not agree with everything Dave says but I do learn from Dave’s teaching and that’s what it’s all about. It’s only one man’s opinion and if you can take away some good points, perfect. Thanks Dave.

So with the complaining about trump being a reddit positive for me and do support complaints about dishonest and self serving people that treat others poorly for personally gain, I prefer people take action.

As a monitor engineer I strive to understand the meaning behind the words that are said.
I’ve tried the panning of the two kick mics and the Bass DI and bass mic. It was very effective at the show I did it at.

Ha! Funny story. Back in 1983 when I was providing sound for a tent with a laser show at the US Festival, and chatting with Steve Wozniak, one of the founders of Apple, he told me the exact same thing. That if we kept the name rat we'd never be successful.
40 years later I have 25 full-time employees I provide sound systems for some of the largest rock bands in the world, provide all the sound for Coachella festival and many other huge festivals, have done a few dozen laps around the planet Earth and been on every continent except for one and have a lifestyle where I surf on a daily basis hang out with friends and run a sound company, get invited to speak at AES, Namm and more high level events than I can remember and all the while sharing knowledge I wish others had shared with me on TH-cam
I think I'm perfectly happy and I'll keep the rat name and accept that respect will never come my way
