I smoked marijauna almost everyday for nearly 20 years. After deciding to convert to Holy Orthodoxy i gave it up with the help of the Jesus Prayer. It was one of the best things i could have done. I found it to inhibit my prayers. Ultimately I had to ask myself, if Christ were to return right now and find me stoned, what would he say?

I could cry pure joy right now. You said plainly "a marriage is not made valid with children". Your goal is "to get each other to heaven". My husband and I got married and then immediately he got reproductive cancer. He's 100% unable to have children and I am very unsafe to carry with hormone sensitive seizures.
This is the first public statement I have seen from The Church (I know this is no Council of Nicea but still) that says marriage matters outside children. I spent 10 years of literal blood sweat and tears trying to subvert God's order for our lives. Clearly He said no children in the [Last Name] home and I took too many stubborn fights with dad to learn to live wit it. I understand why now but it still hurts like hell randomly.
Being denied children was never something I saw. From basically birth I expected to have 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. I have the home now but still no plans for children. I volunteer with foster kids but we will never actively adopt. I had that miscarriage back during 2020 and never again.
Thank you so much for staying you are whole without children. I undoubtedly would be a useless ack of hormonal goo without my husband's guidance and strength. We absolutely had to be married to have the level of influence over each other we do. Your marriage is complete without children.

One should avoid every dependency because dependency is slavery and a slave cannot be free. However, no one is completely free of every influence while they are alive in this fallen world; the best we can hope for is to minimize the influences of the world and maximize our dependence on the Lord. Putting yourself under the influence of an earthly substance is like adding weight to your burden. Be as free as you can be and thank the Lord.

Having lived through youth being around weed and using it, I’d say in hindsight that it’s not good for young people whose brains are developing, unless they have specific maladies that THC, CBD etc. might help. But old folks can use it to good effect, because it’s the least harmful and cheapest relief for chronic pain. Wait until you get old and encounter the burden of physical pain that can rob you of sleep at night and all joy in the day. A mild soporific with few side effects (for olds) is definitely a Godsend.

I volunteered in my church with the youth for 6 months and had to stop seeing new generations being so loud, talkative, and not listening when we (the leaders/volunteers) would ask them to be silent during the prayer or singing. Some of these boys belong to the well-known solid men of God in the church, and for my sanity, i had to pause or even quit (still debating with myself) because i cannot understand that someone won't stop talking even when you tell them 5 times and you are right there standing or sitting behind them, and should you tell their parents or not. But kudos to you :D

I’ve been in a vicious cycle of weed and porn. This is due to being overwhelmed with feelings of anxiety/unhappiness. I’ve asked Jesus Christ to lighten the load a little bit in my head, and ive asked this during stretches of quitting it and trying to repent for a couple of months. I’m tired of this cycle. It’s boring and unsatisfying, and I’ve been praying about this for too long

Hey Jacob, I know how it is, I'm battling anxiety and depression and some physical illness too, and it's not easy. God does wants to see us show some effort, like you mentioned giving up porn and weed. And also our personal prayer is important and if it is emotional and deep it's stronger and more powerful then. But I do think that in addition to personal prayer and the effort you are showing, something else might help you, you do need to be patient and read it every day, it's the Akathist to the Guardian Angel. It helped me a lot with my anxiety, but you have to be persistent and read it every day. Also The Book of Psalms helps, I read one or two kathisma(chapter) before going to bed. And after I finish the whole book (20 chapters in total), I just start again, and I try my best to never let a day go by without reading at least one chapter. God bless you Jacob, I hope Jesus will give you strength to carry on and win all those battles. ☦️

    • @Si_Mondo
      @Si_Mondo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

He said that it ages the brain! There's no science that says that these days. That comes from the *long* debunked study that was paid for by the Nixon administration, where they augmented gas masks to be able to pump smoke into them, put the masks on chimps and proceeded to pump 50 joints worth of smoke, over a 4 hour period, daily. Chimps were dying because they weren't getting enough oxygen to the brain. The methodology was awful but it wasn't exposed for like 2 decades.
I commented that I have CTE (punchdrunk) from a car accident, and that the plague that builds up around the damaged part of the brain which causes the symptoms is cleared by THC.
Waking up every morning feeling like you've drank a bottle of whiskey the night before, even though you hadn't, is not a nice experience. I don't have that experience if I've smoked the night before, and I can actually get to work on time.
Spyridon should have stuck to the spiritual arguments. I know a fair amount (for a layman) about the recent science regarding cannabis, and he showed he knew very little in that regard.

Ganja(Sanskrit for weed) in Hinduism is associated with shiva.
For you all dears let me describe who shive is, according to the sanskrit scriptures.
    - an eternally fallen angel of light(Tallingam bhagavan shambhur Jyotir rupa sanatana)
-the source of false ego (ahankaratmakam vishvam tasmad etad vyajayata)
-the giver of boons to demons(like ravana)
-the avatar of material ignorance (tamo guna avatara)
-the one who leads the world into destruction (bs 5.45)
-an incarnation of anger (canto 3 chapter 12 bhagavatam)
-the lord of ghastly spirits (also canto 3 bhagavatam)
Devils Lettuce is really not too inaccurate a thing to say, dear ones.
I smoked a lot of weed in my life and knew a lot of people who smoked a lot. Basically all of them including me always tried to stop and said they wanted to in passing. But I’ve met almost nobody who’s ever been able to stop smoking weed. It blankets your emotions and dulls your mind, and without it everything seems not worth it. Although it’s not physically dangerous or life threatening, in my own experience at the very least, completely; it is extremely spiritually destructive. After all it is the plant associated with the avatar of the material mode of ignorance of Hinduism. 🙏🏼☦️

Pot can be a problem for me at times and I'll quit if I feel I'm abusing it. For my 73 year old mother it works miracles compared to the pharmaceutical gargabe her doctors got her addicted to when I was younger and spent 4 years getting her off. (opiates) One plant has done for her what they had about 16 drugs plus 3 different opiates doing for her about 7 years ago. she's only on 3 now plus pot. I'd say its up to the individual to weight the impact it has on their life and those around them when they use it and go from there with praying for guidance at the same time.

I hear most customers at legal dispensaries are over 60, for the reason you cite. That the devil’s lettuce is still a schedule 1 substance federally is straightup evil, a burden on suffering people. My wife told me a story of a deacon in Georgia (the country) who had bad health and used weed (indigenous to the Caucasus) to improve his condition. He was arrested and imprisoned according to their evil Soviet-era drug laws.

As an occasional smoker, Fr. Theophan's stance on marijuana makes a lot of sense to me, especially regarding the "end goal" to its usage. Spiritually, I believe the biggest danger with substances like alcohol and weed are that they have high potential to make you weaker against the temptation to sin. Alcohol frequently weakens one against lust (at least for me), and for some people against wrath, greed, and pride. Marijuana can weaken one's resistance to sloth and gluttony (while for others, I have seen it make them more productive and all-around better humans). So, while taking these substances is not inherently and directly sinful, they can easily be indirectly sinful by weakening your resistance to temptation, and therefore causing you to fall to sin.

I appreciate the nuanced view on ‘the devil’s lettuce’. Being a person of a certain age, the question of personal marijuana usage differs from my use of it presently than did for me as a young person. Statistics of usage show that most people buying legal weed are over 60, for good reasons. It’s the least expensive, least debilitating soporific for the aches and pains of an aging body. My own usage is vanishingly slight, and when I do use it I’m very sparing with it, to achieve a microdose of THC and CDB to numb a specific pain or cure nausea. Thank God I’m in excellent general health but the weed is an excellent pain reliever that doesn’t harm liver or kidneys and is far cheaper than any other medications.

From the experience of my youth & found weed completly demotivated me to do anything much, I lost all my drive which I naturally have a lot of. These days weed seems to be far stronger. It is mind-altering in a strong way. I can't square its use within Christianity as being in any way a good thing. I think most people know that within themselves.

The term diacones was present in didascalia Apostolorum and the Apostolic constitutions, with age limits, and a strict requirement of monasticism. The first Ecumenical council rubrics used the Didascalia and the Apostolic Constitutions as it's template, and it replaced the term deacones with the term καλόγρια (nun/female monk). So the Orthodox church had deaconeses, now known as καλόγρια and anything that they do liturgically is limited to functioning in the monastary.

I am back in full swing, I did go too hard. I burned the scholasticism out of me. Am trying harder to find a Church out here in Appalachia to become apart of and find this community, after a few years I am realizing my husband and I deeply need this sense of community. It's all coming back around making more sense.

For those who may argue that there was a female diaconate in The Early Church, it was created in order to help/assist in the baptism of many adult women who were coming into the Orthodox Faith. In those days, people were baptized without clothing, just like babies.

    • @PhoebeK
      @PhoebeK 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

Female deacons also had other duties around women who were sick and care for the poor. But the cannons and tradition are clear that the woman deacon was subordinate to the male deacon and assisted the bishop and male deacon in the care of women within the the church.
There is also a clear theological distinction between the role of the diaconate as the assistant of the bishop and the presbyters who are the bishop's representatives in the parish and counselors.

The Ordination question is more complicated, there are many writers more qualified than I who have written on the subject and it is still debated based on the liturgical evidence. The service for the creation of a deaconess looks smells and acts like the one for a deacon not one for the making of a subdeacon or reader, or that of the creation of a monastic. I would suggest you look into all the literature on the subject and there is much written by faithful Orthodox scholars before proclaiming a view in such a certain way. It is also worth asking the many sainted deaconesses themselves as they will answer such questions.

By the grace of God, Christ called me home in my darkest moments. It's been put on me that I should probably seek communion. The one thing that holds me from Orthodoxy is that the LORD put a revelation on me that I have not been able to shake as of yet. I wish for it to be tested. Proverbs 31: 6-7 It is not for kings, Lemuel- it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more.
Psalm 104: 14-15 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart.

Eastern Catholic here. Many of us in the Byzantine Rite consider ourselves Orthodox in communion with Rome. Often to the dismay of both Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox alike. But we have icons instead of statues, Divine Liturgy instead of Mass, everything is sung or chanted instead of spoken (mumbled), our priests can marry, concelebrate, ad orientem, we say the actual Nicene Creed without the filioque, and you’re likely to see a chotki and not a rosary. Many of the Eastern Catholic Churches were Eastern Orthodox after the Schism and have come back into communion with Rome over the centuries. Out of curiosity, are the Orthodox Churches seeing a rise in new converts given the crisis the current Pope is inflicting upon The Church? The Eastern Catholic Churches are certainly seeing an uptick from the people seeking refuge in sacred tradition. Anyway, just wanted to say that as a Byzantine Catholic, we love our Orthodox brothers and sisters. God Bless

As a Catechumen, I watched this video and felt that it excused my cannabis habit (just smoking a little every night). So, likewise, in Christ, it keeps one trapped in the mental functioning/psychic realm.
about coffee, James, i live in Kona. Hawai'i and see how much Round-up/Honcho weed killer and commercial fertilizers are use and even heard about a scam "organic" producer. and so tell you from bu-koo experience: organic yerba mate is a way better source of caffeine and fun in the ritual of it's traditional preparation for me using a wooden cup (vs. metal, ceramic, etc.) The way to do it is mix 10-40% of trad/smoked/non-100% smokeless yerba mate with a 100% smoke-free yerba mate, intrested? gotta order from Argentina mostly, but ask if u r all-intrested and ready to go , and i will share the info on which brands, etc.

@@br.myou mean out of the only Apostolic Church extant in XV c. Germany, and into his own deracinated cult, sophomore! If you knew Luther from jack s. you wouldn’t defend his apostasy. He was infamous for his hatred of workers, urging rebellious ones to be liquidated with vehemence. He was a nasty, hateful man who invented a false god from his perverted imagination fed by a guilty conscience and gloomy outlook on life. Luther lived inside the worst distortion of dark medieval northern Catholic culture and fell through its bottom.

The Eastern Rite having Married Priests isn't an argument really in favor of Rome. Because it's not because Rome thinks Married Clerics are ok, it's because Eastern Catholicism is built on a false pretense of unity.
