A HEART OF A CHAMPION!!! He will learn from this experience and properly pace himself in the next ironman championship. The guy literally SMASHED the cycling segment and first came out of the water. Unfortunately, it gave too much too early and had nothing left in the end, which was costly. We all make these mistakes earlier in our days when the adrenaline was pumping, but with this much experience under his belt, he will come back even stronger. Don't be surprise we can be looking at a future multiple ironman champion here in the making.
He defeated himself with his own ego and arrogance. The only lesson he will take from this is that he needs to get a different doctor and come up with a better doping strategy for next time.
He was racing to win and he knew he didn’t have the best running legs. He could’ve raced conservatively and comfortably came 5th but that’s not who he is. So he went to the front and smashed. And it worked until his guts failed him and he started to over heat. I don’t think it was a pacing or fitness issue (mind you not over heating is part of pacing). It made for an exciting race. I have never seen an Ironman with a 20man chase pack and 2 guys dangling off the front like that. I have a ton of respect for what he did and I think if you asked him he wouldn’t change anything
Sam you are a complete warrior and gave everything you possibly could. You are a complete inspiration to never give up. We truly hope you are ok and believe in you x
Nice to know I follow the same method as the former World Champ. Overbike and pay for it on the run! 😂 Kudos to Sam for finishing! Problem is he'll have to wait 2 years to get back to kona!
This reminds of Pauli Kairu in Kona lots of years ago. It's inspiring when these elite guys n girls aren't afraid to have a result on their resume that could so easily have been a dnf but they battle on regardless. Much respect and admiration. Same for Wendy Ingraham and Sian Welch.
Very opposite story on Yohan Diniz in IAAF WC Doha 2019. It was a 50 km race walking. Fell behind a new leader, tried to catch up, did catch up, then fell back and eventually DNF after only 20 km.
I don't think he would have let himself DNF - his bike course record wouldn't count if he did. Probably would have crawled to a 17 hour finish if he had to, to keep the bike record lol
I think a big motivation was to be the first man to stay under 4 hours on the bike, and that would not have counted, had he dropped out. An amazing effort, but just a little to much effort on the bike for the marathon.
Imagine pulling a bike race record, then you started to slow down knowing you had pushed too much, called to "Box, box" to 🤮🤮 & 💩💩 with 24 km to go and still managed to finish P18. Most of us wouldn't even make it through.
I mean he’s a world champion I think he’s allowed to have a big ego. Everyone has bad days. Dude was racing to win. He could’ve raced conservatively and road for 5th but he was pretty clear in the press conference that he was there to win and he wasn’t going to outrun Patrick and the guys like that. So he went to the front and road hard and paid for it. Gutsy move. I generally don’t like him mostly related the way he acted towards Sam long a few years back but I respect the way he raced it. No one remembers 5 or 8 or what ever. People will remember this
Intelligence beats valour. This is not healthy and he should have pulled out to fight another day. Imagine how concerned you would be if this is your husband or child. I would not respect Sam any less if he had done so.
Eww. Dope boy crosses the finish line after defeating himself with his own ego and arrogance. Nothing inspirational about it. You at Ironman should be ashamed for allowing him to race.
@@dsd6538I said no to wheel chair after collapsing at a race. Only after I fell down a second time and someone scooped me did I kind of get forced into one. It’s the athlete ego. We think we’re indestructible.
All my respects for finishing it!
True ironman spirit. Finish what you have started.

What a warrior. He could easily of dnf at 18k. A true sportsman and got the job done 🎉🎉🎉
His bike record wouldnt have counted
What a warrior, it takes more courage not to quit than to come 1st...that has my full respect.
To go another 15 miles after he could have called it easy is impressive af. Nicely done Laidlow!
Insane that he still finished in 8:02!
The true spirit of being an IronMan!!!!
Great job Sam
Warrior! ❤

Completed even when totally overcooked and became incapable, not everyone can do that. Respect.
Congratulation Sam Laidlow 🏊♀️🚴♂️🏃♂️👍🔥🔥🔥🏅🏅🏅
Real fighter
An inspiration.. thank you man

Why 2 years??
@@tonialbaladejo1999 back to Nice for 2025 for the men. Then Kona in 2026.
@@rych7852 ahh ok, so he will compete in Nice

Un vrai guerrier Sam🙏
Sometimes it is ok to give up. Sometimes it is even good for you and your health to give up. Full respect for laidlow he went crazy fast on the bike
Amazing athlete!
Big up to Sam for finishing despite having a torrid time.

Huge respect ❤
His start on the swim and bike was epic
Ironman!!!
That's what I call a massive bonk..what an Ironman 💪
My respect.
Respect 😮😢👍👍👍👍
Un champion ❤
still, superbe time. And what a (cycling) show !!!
Warrior spirit to push yourself to the limit. Go big or go home - gave it his best (all in) on the bike and appeared to pay the price on the run.
Warrior
Off to sick bay with new bike record…
Sam Raced For His Whole Support Team that's Why He Finished.
Epic racing
Eu tb já cheguei assim....so que pra 11h 😂

In North America a whistle is a good thing. Like clapping or cheering. It’s a positive. It’s the opposite of Europe.

What’s with the ramp????
He looks really terrible😢 glad he is safe
✊🏻
Biked UNDER 4 hrs !
Tough images
His mother coming to him, of course. Finally his ego got smashed a little. For sure he has a big ego.

コースレコード、3時間57分😊
日本人には、出来ないな😅
The lack of medical observation of his state during race and at finish is very very average 👎

Needed to finish to get the bike course record
Over biked it

Putting on a show🤣.
To say that you must never have done any Triathlon yourself... so disrespectful
Yeah that's why he declined the wheelchair 😉🤦
toi tu es une grosse pompe à vélo.....
