Very nice review, thank you. As a current and very happy owner of the much-maligned previous model I have to admit that I didn't like the new shape as much as the old one initially, but it's starting to grow on me... ;-) I think a matte white with white tridion would look pretty cool.
Oh, and just like in the previous model there are very convenient storage slots on either side right in front of the luggage floor for the bar containing the luggage cover. With the vertical soft partition velcroed to the floor, you fold it more or less double to lower the bar to the floor as well and then you slot it in there, and it's COMPLETELY out of the way until the next time you need it, so you would actually never have to leave it at home when you thought you might need the maximum amount of space at your destination.

I'm always partial to red and white color schemes. I have a BMW with a white exterior and red interior. The red and white Smart looks very...smart.
This car seems ideally suited for a battery electric vehicle. I'm very surprised that such a model doesn't exist.

Removing the rails in step 3 is fine. much better option than having to redesign and add bulk. As an owner, I find it perfectly acceptable.

The roof rails are just fine by me. I had an '08 Smart Cabrio in red with a black tridion cell. Currently in my newest Smart, an '09 Brabus edition in silver.
Great review. My only issue is price of vehicle here in the States .
My gf loves this sort of vehicles,personally I would drive with high anxiety as to when some random vehicle would rear end me & I'll end in another continent lol.Outstanding reviews,you are a true professional keep it up.As always liked & thumbs up.

Haha, I quite like smart cars. My grandparents back in 2012 bought a brabus (non convertible) one with everything on possible. They are great little cars, I remember once going around 70 Mph (112 KPH) in one and it would weave slightly left and right. Parking it next to our car made it look tiny and it was quite funny to see how small they were as we have had SUVs for as long as I can remember so having such a small car in the family I found it hilarious. Plus it gets more looks than a Lamborghini ;P

Just for your information, the Denim Blue soft top you mentioned in January is still not available in the UK :-(.
I just sold my existing 2012 Smart 451 Cabriolet and I have ordered a Yellow to Black with Silver tridion and front grill, 90hp Twinamic Cabriolet Prime Sport with Premium Plus package and most options. I have asked my dealer to try to order the Denim Blue soft top but my build date is 9th Oct so I don't think it will be available by then. I particularly wanted the flappy paddles so had to get the Sports pack.

The cabrio is nicer looking than the hardtop. Im liking it way better as a cabrio,you cant get the denim top in the USA. Only Black and Red. Too Bad!! , just saw today Smart decided to stop selling the gas engine in North America. going all electric. Not so Smart especially when the mileage is so lousy on the electric. Someone at the top in Smart is asleep at the wheel. They should focus on getting better mileage for the gas engine

These are toy cars to me, yes, but i thank thomas for reviewing this. A friend of mine owns one (not on my recommendation) but it's good to hear expert knowledge of Thomas! They are a bit too expensive to consider but the convertible should be the go to version.

Shame you didn't cover about folding down the passenger seat, as wanted to see if that went flat like i did on earlier versions of the car.
Somebody said, in one of the reviews I watched, that if Super Mario had a car in real life the Mini would be it. I disagree, the Smart Cabrio would be it and I like it.

I watched your reviews of the Smart cars, including the Brabus version. Which version felt the best for the Highway as far as being controllable and stable?
Smart is not really a highway car ... besides that, at lower speeds you ll be fine with both. Of course the Brabus is stiffer, but also less comfortable

What surprises me is the use of drum brakes in the rear. Has Mercedes replaced the DCT from the previous generation? Previous generation DCT was horrible. Chose the wrong gears constantly, refused to downshift when the accelerator is fully depressed an do on.

well there are soo many prices for that car in every market
We have a 451 Convertible and removing the side rails is really not a big deal. I can do it in under 60 seconds without having to open the doors/windows. But the storage space of the old one was way better than this sketchy half closed deal the new one got going on.

+Cris FanCars yes thats possible. Just the 60 hp one is manual only
these cars drop so fast in resale vaule, plus since MB makes the car do you pay high upkeep and steep repairs after the warranty expires?
Don't purchase the gas version of the 2016 Smartfortwo, wait for the electric version! They are holding the electric version back until they get enough of the gas vehicles sold, as, the gas one has horrible shift issues and mileage is rotten. There are free electric charging stations all over in every city and they are building more.
Of course, you can charge it at home for pennies. But every major city has a Gov. mandate to provide free electric charging stations for the environment.
What kind of transmission problems?
Lol I always find these toy cars funny. What about in the event of a crash? There not much around you to protect you.

Why do the top bars when stowed take up room when the old model they stowed completely in the lid without doing this? This is a retro- grade step.

Downsizing at it's finest. You can get lots of power from small engines, but the fuel consumption is going to rise.
Just look at the 1.2 petrol from Renault. Needs 9 liters at best. Same with this one. It's an even smaller engine, and even if it has to move a lighter car, it needs lots of fuel to do it.

I just put my $1000.00 deposit down on the 2017 Prime cabriolet,and I want the back up camera was told NO! They are not offering the camera or the 7 inch screen in the US ?Do you know anything about this? And can you please tell me can I go with the same size tires all the way around? I do not want to loose the turning radius,but I want the full warranty from the tire and wheel company that I will be purchasing after possession of the car.

+Autogefühl What I mean by the tires is ....I was told the front tires are smaller than the back tires, FRONT is 165/65 R15 where the BACK is 185/60 R15 this is the size that comes on the car stock. I want all four tires to be the same size so that they can be rotated. The tire store said they would not give me a full warranty because the tires cannot be rotated front to back.
