    A lot of work and professionalism gone into this video, as always Thomas. Many thanks. EV, silence and Cabrio combination is great, especially on country lanes! Cute car, like a fun golf buggy you can drive on the street - but very expensive. You're so correct about the "extras" pricing policy. Choose a bike? Not if unable/disabled. Or don't want to get run over by a truck. Many thanks Thomas and Team.

    Thomas your message about sustainability, veganism, and the use of animal hides is a welcome message. For many of us, our cultures are awash in messages that encourage a gluttony of meat consumption and a use of animal hides without consideration of the full impact on society.
    Please continue the message you share. It all starts with awareness followed by a REDUCTION of meat consumption. Over time you realize you can do with much less meat consumption. Less meat consumption globally by all would dramatically change the calculus for the animal industry.
    Appreciated the Audi e-tron video as well as this one. All-the-Best

    • @autogefuehl
      @autogefuehl  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really means a lot. You know that when you do something which is not considered "normal" (since normal just means what the majority of the society does at this very moment), you also face severe headwind. But I think you should stick to compassion and always think of how you would like to be treated yourself. And if people appreciate the respect towards all other humans and animals, that's what keeps me going.

    • @anthonycbrown1952
      @anthonycbrown1952 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you already know this but it warrants repeating 'You Are On The Right Side of History' and I believe within our lifetimes the majority of society will look back and ask 'what were we thinking in regards in a culture awash in meat consumption and the cruel treatment of animals'?
      Have a great weekend.

    Thomas don't ever stop talking about Veganism when it comes to automotive seating and interiors. You are the one car channel that actually cares about these things and you should never stop. The Autogefuhl team tells it like it is. and when it comes to leather, its obsolete. and we can do better.

      And definitely no to leather steering wheel, I hate the fact that even though you my current car, a Twingo 90 tce Dynamique & my new car a Fiesta titanium ecoboost both have fabric seats but they still have a leather steering wheel. I do like heated seats, even with fabric. I even chose a Thomas blue (chrome blue) for the fiesta. Keep up the good work & best wishes from the UK

    Great video Thomas, especially for me being a native Copenhagener. Smart ForTwo is a great concept but extremely overpriced in DK. As urban eve if it could cost say 6-7,000 euro it would gain popularity. Today people just buy one of the cheap mini bamboo cars. Mind you Prince Henrik was never King but ‘only’ consort to the queen. Sadly he recently passed away an old man. Keep up the good work in Autogefuhel.

    I somehow like the idea of the car, but it's way too expensive. You can get a full electric Renault Zoe with Bose sound package etc. for less! The Smart SHOULD cost about 14k. 15kWh/100Km is also very much for such a small car. It should be around 9-10kWh/100Km. Nice video, though - as always. ;)

    Mine will be the coupe in white with black. 22kw charging and prime trim level (they only do prime trim in the U.K. unfortunately). I wish that wasn’t the case because I want it to be sustainable and I really like the fabric seats in the Zoe.
    I also don’t entirely agree about the infotainment system. It’s virtually the same as the Renault R Link I’ve used for the past 2 years. The difference is that in the Zoe you have a shortcut to change the media source behind the wheel which makes it easier than on the Smart. And I don’t find the GPS that hard to use. Although I will probably be using Android Auto (I have an iPhone 6 but will buy a cheap android phone just for playing media and so on). Pretty annoying they haven’t supported Apple CarPlay but the Zoe I have doesn’t support either so it’s at least better to have one than not at all.

    A lot of people here in the US seem to go for a Fiat instead. Not sure why but a Fiat 500 seems to be a little more roomy on the inside and built a little better. If you want more room then maybe go check out a VW Golf or one of their hatches. Even a Polo has a good amount of room.

    I have a petrol smart car 2017 ( I drive into local town for work across country) I have a leather steering wheel and what the sales guy was saying leather seats when I checked manual and online advertising I realised seats actually made of fake leather . Has similar properties to real leather and isn’t shiny like some plastic leathers . Anyway it’s now 2024 and if you use a damp soft cloth to clean it looks as good as day it was brand new. Seats I find are very comfortable. The quantity of leather used in steering wheel is minimal and if you eat meat I have to say it but it is a byproduct . Anyway I would love an electric car and wondered if getting a low mileage electric smart would be a good idea. Was wondering how much a brand new battery would cost in 2024 including installation. I have seen cars online that have an ev battery you simply roll into house of garage/ shed and charge up taking away some of the problem of charging .
    I have sports package in my smart with bigger wheels ( not brabus) but find ride more comfortable in 2017 gen than previous 2 smart cars I have owned. I have driven other small cars but have found them rather cheap feeling and tinny and when I got back into my 2017 smart I feel relaxed and at home. You can park them anywhere. I have even parked in large motorcycle type bays ( I did check that was legit)
    Anyway they fun well built and reliable

      If you want to know more about the leather topic: I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
      You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at th-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/w-d-xo.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable.
      A good example for high-end luxury with ventilated animal free seats is the BMW X7 with Sensafin: th-cam.com/video/1pRNkW9nrrw/w-d-xo.html
      And the Kia EV9 with plant-based oil share: th-cam.com/video/6vXePQi_MAk/w-d-xo.html
      New leatherette materials can be superior in every aspect, even for cleaning: th-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/w-d-xo.html
      More and more natural materials are rising: th-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/w-d-xo.html
      Also check out what the animal skin leather industry tried to with our channel: th-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/w-d-xo.html
      For seeing how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: th-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/w-d-xo.html
      Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
      Also a group of researchers and German journalists from public media could recent directly trace the connection between car animal leather production and illegal burning down Amazon rain forest:
      www.daserste.de/information/reportage-dokumentation/ard-story/videos/illegales-leder-video-100.html
      In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. Mind experiment: You are getting slain down on the street; would it matter to you if it was for your smartphone or for your purse? Remember that animal skin leather is no different to fur, fur is just leather where the hair is still on. And fur is widely not accepted for clothing anymore, and of course not for cars.
      We cannot change what we have bought in the past, but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.
      For a great insight into sustainability in the automotive industry, you can also check out our extensive documentary:

    This was a nice episode. It made sustainability look interesting. The only problem I still have is the weight and charging times for batteries. We simply need something better. There must be something with the energy density of petrol or diesel that is more compact and lighter than batteries. Current batteries annoy me with their weight, slow charging times, sensitivity to temperatures and other factors. You don't have to fill a fuel tank to 80% for fear of wearing it out if you fill to 100%. You can completely deplete it and then just fill up in a few minutes and go on. Heating doesn't affect it. Infrastructure doesn't affect it. We NEED something better.

      @christill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Eason Murphree It’s not actually slow, and it’s not actually that expensive once you factor in the total cost of ownership. The range isn’t great but I’ve done 1400 mile road trips in my Renault Zoe and that had the same 22kw charging speed. So you can do longer trips. Maybe not quite as long as the Zoe because of the smaller range, but it can do it. I wouldn’t recommend buying it without the 22kw option though. Because at some point you’ll want to do a 100 mile or more round trip somewhere and it’ll be annoying if you can’t charge in about 40 mins.

  • @Hvitserk67
    @Hvitserk67 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice review, but I don't think Smart Fortwo make any signifikant changes in the EV marked (not even as a city car). BMW i3 is definitely more practical and is now available with a 94Ah (33 KWh) battery and even VW e-Up! has a 50Ah (18,7 KWh) battery. Anyway "Hvordan går det?" :)

  • @christill
    @christill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think if battery production is going to be discussed, then the production of other types of vehicles should be as well. But the industry is so used to never asking questions about that. Like you mentioned with the i3 being the exception to the rule.
    A lot of people tend to forget about or ignore all the great aspects and focus on myths about battery production, which actually uses very little rare earth metals and that amount is coming down all the time and the co2 emissions are offset quickly after manufacture, depending on battery size. ICE cars only ever continue to generate more emissions over their life. EVs eliminate air pollution (which kills us), especially in urban and suburban areas, in traffic jams, in indoor car parks etc. Charge it with renewable energy and it’s great, but even without, it will still be massively cleaner than ICE vehicles. And still with the benefits for air pollution where most people are living. And this is before you even consider the opportunities for reuse and recycling of EV batteries.
    In well to wheel emissions, even CNG isn’t better than an EV even on grid electricity according to a US Energy Department graph I found. Let alone renewable energy. And I think that’s an old graph when there was less renewable energy.

      EV co2 emission offsets are not simple - and not all electricity is from renewables. And wind-power is inefficient and unethical... Solar better, I guess? An EV is better in a city, if you can plug it in at home. On a long cross country journey bypassing urban areas, a modern diesel with SCR and start/stop (eg a Golf/Focus) isn't too bad, energy use-wise! We've just changed our Zoe for a E-NV200 Combi - love it!

    Where do you live? In my country if you need a charger, you install a charger, end of story.
    In the worst case, you have to pay for an additional electricity meter and really expensive install fee, and you only get a 25A/240V Schuko, but they get it done fast.... and also, charging at 6kW AC is not too bad. You can "fill up" a 60kWh battery in ~10 hours...

      Our mayor passed a local law recently, which enables important projects to go forward. For many years, old concrete apartment buildings couldn't get thermal insulation because of 1-2 cheapskate tenants, who didn't want to pay their share nor to sign the friggin' documents.
      Now only a "majority vote" is needed to do all kinds of things like renovations, water pipe replacements ...etc. and also for additional electric circuits. If you get 50% +1 of the tenants to sign off, you can have your EV plug in your garage or parking spot.
      Even if you don't get the necessary votes, you can fill out a form at the mayor's office, and he usually takes care of it. He's very pro EV. Our city started buying electric buses this year... many other mayors are following his lead ...

    @JustReadable 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I drive a Zoe 40 but I would feel cheated on with the same butter-and-bread system in the Smart. The lack of modern thermal management (like in the Hyundai Ioniq or Kona electric) really hurts with a smaller battery in Winter. What I really dislike is that Renault switches off the heating while charging. This should be even more annoying in a Cabrio.
    The infotainment system is pretty bad and outdated. You dont see charging stations on the map and the search function is not usable as you have no control about what it shows you (filter on charging network, charging speed) and the names are like "RWE blablabal" and then the location is cut off due to space limitations.
    So there are some potential issues that can make this "fun car" annoying. IMO Mercedes did a bad decision to use the interior and thermal management from Renault.
