Eating Spaghetti Ice Cream in Germany

  • You don’t need a fork to eat this plate of spaghetti. Just a spoon will do. And that’s because it’s not actually spaghetti. It’s Spaghettieis-vanilla ice cream noodles topped with strawberry sauce and white chocolate shavings. Dario Fontanella, the inventor of spaghetti ice cream, invites us into his dessert shop in Mannheim, Germany to sample this ice cold treat. Did we mention it’s served on a bed of whipped cream?

The best thing about Spaghetti Ice Cream is that the whipped cream freezes, where it touches the ice cream so that you have frozen whipped cream mixed with ice cream, which melts in your mouth and it's absolutely delicious!

We always had euros in a jar by the front door so when we heard the song, we’d run out like kids do in the summertime here in the US. It's visually different, it has a different melting behaviour, it has a greater surface to come in contact with oxygen, aromaticswise and the whipped cream doesn't get between the ice and sauce and your tastebuds due to being placed under the icecream thus later giving its additional boost ‐ which all in all is quite genius.

I remember being on holiday in Germany with my dad as a kid. It was a really hot, sunny day and we were out walking around and exploring this big forest/natural park area. After a couple hours of exploring we came out of the park and saw an ice cream parlor, and decided we should have some. On the wall I saw the menu, which had all the usual flavors and spaghetti ice cream. I was intrigued, so my dad got the spaghetti ice cream for me. It was delicious after walking around on a hot day.
