    I noticed that at 8:00, where his phone is shown, although his mothers phone number is saved as Paula, he has a picture, presumably of himself and his mother on his nightstand. For me, this indicates that he is torn between refusing to acknowledge Paula as her Mother and wishing her to be the mother she is supposed to be. For me, this shot shows that deeply, he wishes for his mothers love but he himself is suppressing his wish. I would really like to hear what others think about this thought

      Yeah, I've noticed the same... It's a psychological mechanism : pretending to himself that he doesn't need the love of her Mother and that he doesn't love her, so he can't feel the pain of being rejected. What is so true about the scene with his mother is that : it's only when he allows his pain to be expressed that he reconnects with what he really feels for his mother - not only love, but also the anger of being rejected by the only person who was supposed to love him, that's why he's angry "To whom mom ?" (i.e you were never there for me, so I couldn't listen to you) - which in turn allows also her mother to realized her own feelings...

    I'm a 22 year old guy, and I've been a disconnected dreamer since I was a little boy. I don't just shy away from connecting with people in real life, I hardly ever leave comments on the internet, and I've gotten rid of social media as well. Frankly, I feel as though I died at 18, and I often wrestle with thoughts of completing that process completely. I just can't see a way out.

      I feel you brother. Rediscover your creativity and write your story all the way through to the end and then a new beginning will continue on. Only you can make the choices and take the actions to feel life fully again. The pain is apart of life just as much as the joy. We know one because of the other. Reconnect with what ignites your soul and allow it to illuminate the darkness you hide in so that you can perceive your life in a new light expanding your views so that you see the world outside you is of the world inside you.

    This is the only analysis of Moonlight ever! I want to cry. Broken down perfectly. Made me see some things in myself that were relevant to the subject at hand. The only thing I disagree with is that this movie is at all about race. I think for white audiences it's about race because white people are not the central focus. It's not about race when it's only one race dealing with it's own internal bullshit. Black people have issues all to our own and white people are not the cause of all of them. His issues had nothing to do with race but African-American cultural values which favor masculinity and toughness.

    • @AndresDeMoya
      @AndresDeMoya 6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      It's not only cultural is also educational. I live in latin-america, and here the education treshold is really shallow. So people are less propense to open their minds and see the world in a different way as how it has been shown to them by their ancestors. Masculinity and toughness is really a must here if you want to survive. That's why our culture is so violent, it even permiated into the maternal way of thinking. If your child isn't the macho archetype most mothers would hate their children. As a man who grew in a fatherless family and with a loveless relation with my mother I understand this movie really deeply. And I had never noticed that detail about the name of his mother in the phone but it hit me hard when I saw it in this video because I have my mothers full name on the phone as her ID. That was really deep and interesting. Also you said is not about race but imagine changing the skin tone of the protagonist to white, latino or any other... It wouldn't change that much the story, would it?

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      It wouldn't change the story so much but it IS refreshing to see this story being told with black people because it's typical to show homosexual stories with white people. In Europe this film was also interpreted as something racial but generally no one is really accepting towards homosexuality, everyone says they're okay with it but when it comes down to it they don't want their own children to be different because they know it will give them problems in the future. Luckily things are changing slowly and perhaps in 10-20 years we won't care so much about these things anymore :)

    • @MaureenMurphy_
      @MaureenMurphy_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Judy Apelsin Idk I think it has something to do with race bc usually, there are people who are like “Black men aren’t gays! It’s something that the Jews or white people have implanted into our black men’s heads, they’re not truly like that!” Or something like that.

      Thank you so much for these videos! I love the breakdown of the King Warrior Magician Lover Motifs. I will say, that unlike the King and Magician videos, by focusing on one film, the full range of the Lover archetype was lost and it became more about Moonlight than it was about the Lover. I also think, if we are talking about the Lover in moonlight, we have to begin with Juan, who acted as both a Lover and Magician in spite of the oppressive setting. It is too simplistic to say that Chiron simply replicated the behaviors of a drug dealer when referencing Juan. That relationship was both foundational and atypical. Thanks for these videos. They are lovely.

      @Like Stories of Old.
      It makes sense that you would use a gay man to make an unbiased look at the Lover archetype. Given that men who look at the spiritual side of things, tend to worship women, using a hetero sexual pairing would inevitably mean demonizing the male in order to uplift the female aspect of love.

You have given the name to what I lived more than a third of my life with, the Flatten Effect (which I had called the cursed emotion). Finally finishing KWML and this video series has been a really huge deal for me. I've never been much of a reader. It's hard for me to focus on books unless they *really* enrapture me. I first watched your video essay on the King last year and it inspired me to buy the book. I've only just finished the book (after owning it for about a year) and I can positively say that you've helped me get back into reading, especially nonfiction philosophy and psychology. Thank you SO much. I have and will continue to recommend your channel to every one of my friends because you're just that wonderful as a content creator. Every one of your videos, without fail, brings me to tears of joy and hope. NEVER give up this passion of yours. I can tell it means a lot to you and it means a lot to many people. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

    These videos have really helped me. I think I've cried a good 8-10 times watching them. I first watched these for characters I'm writing in books, but they've helped me see so much into myself as well. Thankyou for making these.

    Hey new sub here. I have to tell you man. You are not a critic of movies. You are a channeler . You are expressing the true human emotion found in film, which is another form of channeling. You do it so well. Your speech is great and so fluent. Your words alone reach our souls. And everyone who watches your "channel" knows what I am speaking about. Up until 2 years ago I would have over looked the real meaning in most films. Part of the awakening in all of us. You my friend are assisting others in finding the deep part inside us all we are so desperately trying to remember.

    One of the best books of all time; the lover is the last form to master in my opinion
    If people become obsessed with their inner magician, then warrior, then king/queen, it becomes a lot easier to fulfill the lover archetype

    I've been waiting to watch this video for a few weeks now. The title was enough to make me go get the movie and watch it before diving into this one. I watched the movie last night, slept on it, and then watched your analysis this morning with some coffee. Thank you for your work! Now it's time to go do mine.

    Still find myself returning to this, this is probably the only time an analysis of anything has made me feel something, if only that it's very hard not to relate from where I'm from. If I'm honest to myself, there are feelings of resentment related to every aspect of my life that I bottle up inwards and let out in private. I don't feel at home in the gender role I'm in, but it's so hard to branch out when everyone is policing each other.

      Have you considered distancing yourself from the toxicity in your life and start over? I did something like that and it vastly improved my quality of life. I don't know your situation or your age of course, but if you someday get the opportunity to start over and start finding people who accept you for who you are, I highly recommend it. It might even help mend some toxic older relationships if you put some distance between you and them? I hope you find your way through this patch ❤
