    I just took the MSF and, thankfully, passed. I somehow made a 100 on the riding test despite never having driven a motorcycle or used any manual transmission before, but I definitely don't feel prepared to be on the road.
    We were on little bikes (I actually rode a Spade like yours), so it was probably a lot easier than being on a big ol' Harley. But I don't think the MSF is very beginner-friendly, in spite of what others say. They go pretty fast through all of the activities it can be daunting when everyone seems to be getting it due to years of experience while you're lagging behind.

    Don't confuse knowledge with the ability to teach. A great instructor doesn't shut down questions.

    • @SaintsPurgatory
      @SaintsPurgatory 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct on that. Many of these 'instructors' at MSF should not be teaching anyone at all. They don't have the skills to teach or the ability to understand that they are inviting new riders to take these courses when the 'instructors' do not have the patience to teach them the basics. The videos I have seen and input from new riders is they are cramming it all into a short amount of time and over loading the students. That is NOT how you teach anyone.

    This was my experience as well. As a brand new newbie, having never driven a motorcycle or dirt bike and never driven a stick shift vehicle, this path was not the best for me. I got to Day 3 and realized that I was still struggling with the friction zone while not being completely comfortable on the bike. My instructors were awesome and patient but they still had to keep at their schedule. I will still pursue my motorcycle license but definitely down another path.

      Same experience for me. I just bowed out after 3 hrs, day one. I couldn’t get comfortable and it was starting to become not fun. I wanted to stick around but I was falling far behind and slowing everyone down. I’m ok with my decision. Riding a motorcycle is not easy for riding virgins. A lot easier if you’ve had some practice.

    MSF is a huge ask for new riders. It's either hot or cold, its a ton of hours, its a blitz of information. I passed the test with 100% due to prior experience but a lot of the other people had a lot of trouble.
    Also I totally get your anxiety. I actually also had a ton of anxiety and the only bathroom was a porta-potty which sucked. After all that I have already wrecked my first bike after only a few weeks. Me and the bike are ok I just have to replace my turn signal. Just make sure you practice a lot and take everything slow. No reason to try and get low in corners too fast like my dumb ass.

    800+ dollars, and 2 weekends gone too shit all cause of how bullshit their testing system is. Failed the class twice, first time was understandable, but the second time I did it I only hit one cone on one of the “tasks” and it caused me to fail. An instructor in training took the class that has rode for 30+ years and failed, in fact I did better than him lmfao. Completely bs would not recommend taking from Harley Davidson.

    I took the MSF course. Having never been on a motorcycle or scooter in my life, I can tell you it was a terrible experience. I felt exactly the way you did. Did not help that some people were just breezing through the course while I was struggling. Failed the course, but I am still determined to get my endorsement. Going to purchase a small bike and practice on my own. While I can’t say I did not learn anything, I would never suggest anyone take one of these courses if you’ve never been on a bike or scooter. These courses are for refinement. Not beginners. Don’t be fooled.

      Actually, the MSF course is for the person who wouldn't know a motorcycle from a crock pot. They've even dumb ed down the course so much so that when you pass it, you'll need to spend many more hours in a parking lot on a little 125cc bike before ever venturing out in traffic lest you get your self killed. If you failed this easy little course the best thing to do is get a bicycle and practice all the exercises you did in the course until you can do them with ease. Then, get a private lesson from one of the MSF instructors on the smallest 125cc bike they have,( msf not at a Harley dealer) if after 8 hours or so of one on one training if you still can't ''get it'', find another hobby. 2 wheels aren't for everyone. And don't expect the instructor to be a physiologist. If you have ''anxiety problems'' like the above person, see the physiologist for help before taking a course.

    I can relate to your experience. I am 4'11 and weigh about 100lbs and didn't have the best experience while taking a MSF skills course in New Jersey this weekend. Passed my written test, but didn't make it into day 3 of the course. On day 2, the bike they gave me to ride was a Yahama star cruiser. The bike didn't turn on unless it was on neutral ( I was the only one in the class to get a bike with a problem) and the instructors had to continue coming by me everytime I stalled (5x+) to help me put the bike back on neutral by constantly jamming on the gear shifter. Its was 80+ degrees out, my anxiety and nerves were out of wack, and plus I had to deal with a malfunctioning bike. They ended up switching me to a Honda Grom... but by that time I had already dropped the Yahama on the ground twice. The transition from the Yahama to the Honda Grom was a big one... cruiser to sports bike. I made a bad turn on the Honda and stomped too hard on the breaks, where on the Yamaha I had to stomp hard to actually break... and I was asked to sign a paper and seek possibly one on one private lessons. It was a horrible experience overall. So if you pass the written test through a riding course, you are able to go get your permit at the dmv? What documents would I need to provide because the coaches just had me sign that paper and didn't provide me with anything else...

    • @JazzWolfe
      @JazzWolfe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for sharing you experience. I'm so sorry that they counseled you out after not switching you to the grom in the first place. The grom definitely has a very stiff front brake and it's very easy to apply too much pressure especially after riding a cruiser. I didn't take the written test at my actual MSF course, but I went down to the DMV and took it there. Your state may differ on what items you need to bring. In NC, all I needed was to take the written test there and provide my drivers license to get my permit.

    • @drivesaferidesmarter902
      @drivesaferidesmarter902 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow according to most states that does the msf. If you are counselled out that mean you weren't able to complete all riding exercises. So you can't continue with the classroom portion so you can't take the written test at the course and would have to do it at the DMV. only way to get a permit from the course is to do all exercises and all classroom. Even if you fail the skills test, but you pass the knowledge you get the permit.
      So sorry you had a bad experience.you should be able to file a complaint about the bike poor maintenance and giving you a bike without giving you time to adjust to it.

I also dropped the bike 4 times. I also have chronic anxiety and he kept telling me to calm down. To me....it was just me being NORMAL. Like you mentioned. But he didn't get that. I ended up quitting. My 19 year old daughter kept going and I thought she was doing great. Next thing I know...she and another woman who was 4'11 were "counseled out" :( All 3 women in the course did not pass the 1st day. We were told: "The bike is too big for you. Take the course at the college." I also had a hard time figuring out the directions of the course and did not think we had enough practice on each skill. My daughter and the other lady couldn't do the weaving in and out. I feel like the instructors KNOW from the first 5 minutes who will pass and who won't. :( My Harley dream is OVER. I, like you, think I would be better off practicing alone. Thanks for the permit idea! I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for this video. You've made me feel better. We have a different course and system in Quebec; you have to do a closed-course test at the SAAQ (our DMV) to get a provisional learner's permit. But I had similar problems in that they kept moving me to bigger bikes when I was comfortable on the smaller displacement machines. And it did not help that my riding experience with 50cc scooters did not help with a manual transmission. Suffice it to say that I stayed with twist-n-goes from then on...though every so often something like the Royal Enfield INT 650 makes me go "oh, hey..."
    I failed the closed-course test the first time, too. The stubborn bugger in me had me pay for range time until I passed a month or so later. :)

    Jazz - I hope you continue. Riding is a blast and you have to start somewhere. Maybe when the weather gets cooler - it is common during the summer to lose students to the heat. As an MSF instructor and one who does HDRA, let me add that the weight of those bikes gets to smaller folks - adding in heat makes it worse. Had a 95 lb lady about your height in a class drop it 4 times, and then realize it was a bit heavy for her to learn on. Non-HD MSF classes use lighter 250 cc bikes, and they may be better for you at the community college. HD Street 500 bikes have a speed restrictor on 1st and 2nd gear. The bike still makes power (so it is still 500 cc) - you just cant go over about 26 MPH.
    As far as the path of travel, there are times that it definitely is confusing for new riders- as long as you are not the first one doing the exercise and you watch the demo, you should be ok. Instructors are used to a few common mistakes there. It is nice that the instructor showed you the path of travel at the breaks. More that most do. Realize that "TMI" can be a student overload factor just as much as too little info. You have all types. Maybe next time just trust that you have enough to go on and the rest will fall into place. Your test - well the instructor certainly wanted to pass if he gave you 2 shots at evaluation 1. But as you know, a drop in the evaluation portion like the u-turn in 2 is an automatic failure. No "wiggle room" there. You'll be ok next time as you sound like you did learn a lot - you'll be with the more experienced students! Best of luck.

    I got kicked out to and i really want to ride and own a motorcycle but, anyway got kicked out , because first I dropped the bike because I accidentally letted go of the clutch and I wasn't breaked, and then I had trouble turning because I kept putting my foot down because I have trouble with focusing on the clutch and throttle at the same time, like i didn't know if I was supposed to throttle first then slowly release the clutch or the other way around but anyway after I got sent home because they didn't feel comfortable with me doing the next exricesises, but it was my first time ever being on a bike

    I had a similar experience; however I have continuously driven a manual car since I was 16, now 63. Can't seem to let the manuals go for some reason :). Having failed the evaluation, looking back, if I had to find a single skill that caused my failure, it would be my inability to master the friction zone. Of course I could find the point where the clutch engages, but to control speed and absolutely be able to control speed by feathering the clutch was a fail for me. On the bike I was given, a GZ250, the clutch did not engage until almost fully open. I would say it was a few millimeters before reaching being fully open, so there was not much of a friction zone to begin with. For two days I struggled with it. I've had my learners permit for a while now, but have never used it. I have a new Royal Enfield Himalayan that is not registered yet. I think I will ride it to the DMV, avoiding the highway, get it registered, and hone my skills in the parking lot and go do the riding test at DMV. From there I'll practice the MotoJitsu course on my own until I master this slow riding skill for once and for all. Thanks for your story. I can definitely relate.

    Early in your narrative you mentioned the motorcycle was restricted. This is true, but not in the way you said. The bikes are 500 cc and always stay 500cc. That is their cylinder displacement It doesn't change. The bike is probably restricted to not be able to go faster than 20 mph in 1st gear. This is a computer controlled fuel injected engine. Might want to understand how the motorcycle operates via youtube, etc.

    If you feel the MSF I would recommend going to Harley Davison the instructors there are very patient and have a laid-back attitude. They want you to pass!

      Not all of them Re good instructors. And for the amount of money you pay harley should make sure every rider receives great instruction. I had a great experience but my wife's instructors were lacking in the instruction department. Quite upset with her instructors.

      I instruct, I don’t care if they pass, the goal is to learn and hopefully pass. Sounds like a bad instructor

    I am in BC and wow it is so much harder and expensive to get a mc license here. My course in May is $800 cdn, 😳 then I have to pass the skills test AND a road test. I bought a Rebel 250 last summer knowing full well that I would soon outgrow it, but it is exactly what I needed to start on. I would have been way too intimidated as a short rider on a larger bike.

    The issue I have with the Harley courses is that they have split allegiances. You are there paying to learn something, and what they are really doing is trying to sell you a bike. In your case, one way too big for you to be comfortable on. Harleys are big bikes so they need to force a big bike on you to get the sale at the end. Your pass or fail is secondary to them selling that big bike.
    Other places you take a class, they only have one job, make you a good motorcycle rider. The bikes are generally chosen because they are the best to learn on. And some places will send you around the course on a bicycle if that's what it takes to get you one more step closer to the end goal.

      I couldn't agree more with this and I really think more people should know this especially smaller riders when thinking of taking a MSF course at HD

    I think that the practice of putting brand new riders with zero experience on a 500 Lb. bike is ridiculous. My MSF course used mostly 250cc bikes. Waaaaay better for brand new riders.

      Try to find a Community College. I’ve most people recommend them over any dealership, but there are trade offs to both

    My son and I took this course and had great instructors. Our experience was amazing. My wife just took the course and it was the total opposite. She was very disappointed in the instruction she received. Out of ten riders 3 dropped out 3 failed and the 4 that passed just passed. So that is a total of 40 percent success rate. And for 289 dollars it was a waste of money. I'm sorry you didn't pass after paying that much money. But I don't believe it was you I believe you didn't have the correct instruction.

    Reading these comments are making me feel like I messed up by signing up with HD. Signed up yesterday since the dealership is 7 minutes away from where I live as opposed to the community college classes which were 1hr 40min at best. Classes are next weekend so I guess I’ll hope for the best.
