Realistic damage molding that affected your car, real race hazards, pit stops, pace car and full cautions, amazing sound effects, and tight controls....all in 1998. This game was so ahead of its time in the arcades.
Tom E I think if Sega remaster it using today's technology, it might still be a stellar game. Daytona USA 2 offered a great balance between arcade fun and the thrills of a sim racing game.
It blew my mind as a kid all the effects this game had, the way the care shakes/vibrates to give sense of speed, the quality of the smoke, the deformation model, the quality of fire/sparkles when you hit the wall etc... For 1998 was impressive, damn it even still looks great today.
I'm looking at this with a video of "Daytona Championship USA" in another screen, and this blows it away, even 20+ years later. Little things like the way the car pitches and yaws exaggeratedly in tight turns while drifting, the smoke effects on the tires while spinning in a drift, the anime-like debris that kicks up at the edges of the tire marks, the damaged trunk flapping in the wind while drifting... So many things done RIGHT. It feels like riding a rollercoaster. A true amusement ride.
To be a less profiteable game mode (and of course less seen in arcade locals), AM2 put really much effort to the Grand Prix mode, even with yellow flags.
7:29 You can see the real reason for forcing a Full Course Caution. There's a car getting burned after getting totalled by another one who got involved into a pileup.
Man, I just love the look and feel of this game. It's those damage molding, the gauge to the left, and pit stops that really makes the game shine for me, freakin love seeing your car being rebuilt as part of the race and being reminded, yeah, it's a video game, keep watch. And it's just so colorful! What a game, I loved it each time I played it.
The 4K quality is so impressive! I remember playing this game at Chuck E. Cheese's many years ago (I wish they released it for the PC, Sega Saturn, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, PlayStation 2, etc.). It was one of my favorite arcade classics, along with "18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker" and the Nintendo 64 versions of "Elmo's Number Journey" and "Tigger's Honey Hunt" at a McDonald's PlayPlace. This arcade game series reminds me of NASCAR and ARCA. Fantastic job!
maybe the playstation 2 and gamecube, this game comsumes a big part of memory ram and cpu, a modern laptop is enough to run it but, if you have a 5 years old laptop you need to stay playing the first one
Took me quite a few videos to notice, but the pace car is a Dodge Viper. That's funny to me because just 2 years prior, SEGA had a game that featured a playable (albeit race spec) Viper. How much do I want to bet they just took the Viper from Scud Race, traded the spoiler for the pace car lights, and swapped the color of the stripes around and called it a day?
Man, I played the shit out of this game in our local arcade hall. Always after school, I jumped behind the wheel and see if I could beat my time. Until that one day, they removed the machine because of a malfunction. Sadly, it was never seen again...
Similar case to mine,it was initially there in the arcade my local supermarket had. Ever since the arcade got removed and replaced with a few more consecutive ones, none of them ever featured this cabinet ever again. I'm glad I've found this gem when the first arcade was operating though.
Same here; that's what I would have liked to see since this arcade game is really awesome! I can imagine the video game consoles they could have released it on: the Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, and the Sega Dreamcast. Same with the PC.
@@The_Mammalizer Maybe if SEGA AM2 made this game fully optimized for old video games consoles, it would have happened as it would have been convenient for SEGA gamers, especially those who don't even have local arcades near them.

Have you ever seen Virtua Fighter 3/tb over there too? I wouldn't be surprised if not, just like VF3 Daytona USA 2 was a "Model 3" game back in 1996 Model 3 cabinets were sold for like 20,000 dollars not many places had them when they came out because they were so damn expensive, the hardware of these things was literally USA army simulation technology. As a result Model 3 games became hard to find due to their cost, most arcade owners would rather buy multiple cheap machines for the same price.
@@thesch2867 It's been a few years since I've really hit up any of the arcades over here but I think we might have had it but again I could very well be confusing it with one of the other VF games

I think they were trying to mimic the helmet radios that drivers had to use in the era; the radio calls may be hard to understand, but Sega went so far as to add an extra set of speakers inside the headrests of the Deluxe sit-down cabinets that faced your ears and only played the radio communications to make the effect work!

Hello From the video, it seems that you're using a racing wheel. Is it possible if you could share the configuration file? I can't seem to get the gear stick to work.
I put a French tutorial on my channel (scud race supermodel) for using wheel and h shifter. You must have supermodel loader. You can check the forum too.
@@joshua1919 If you look closely at the Pace Car here, it lacks the distinctive GTS-R spoiler and any sponsorships. The rear, which we can see, has the same rendered polygons, lighting, shadows and textures as the SCUD Race Viper.

Is it just me or can I not find the English port of the game anywhere I only got the Japanese port semi working (some car textures not showing and menus blank)
There's only one version of the game and while it has both languages it defaults to Japanese; there is a "region code" button combination you can press to access the region options in the test menu and select the proper language. To fix the missing textures, try installing the latest Supermodel nightly builds from here for fixed car textures and lots of other graphics, performance, and sound improvements: www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1206
Maybe on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and maybe Steam? I would include the Switch but it would need more power to run it so wait for the Switch Pro or another console, handheld or Hybrid.
Is there a method of changing car colors for single player in the new versions of supermodel? the old method of using Emulatenet doesn't seem to work for me anymore.
The same rom is actually used for all regions; instead, the region each cabinet belonged to was set at the factory in software and is shown in the operator's test menu. If you clear the game's memory the region setting will default to Japan, but this can be changed after entering a password that unlocks the region selector
Sega used this system to simplify the software for a lot of games from this era, even if it meant storing data for two different languages; Daytona USA 2 here even needed to use a hard drive inside the cabinets to store two copies of all the music files, one with the native Japanese vocalist and one with an English vocalist!
"this can be changed after entering a password that unlocks the region selector" How can you unlock this ? Because, contrary in Model 2 games, region select in Model 3 games is greyed and impossible to select.
I can't remember the password, but I do know it is entered by pushing the VR and service buttons in a specific sequence while the test menu is open; after the password is entered, the region option gets selected and can then be changed 👍
For the emulator, I use Supermodel 3, but be sure to download the latest Release builds from the Supermodel forum here to fix texture and sound problems (don't use the debug version!) www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1206 I also have used gamepads and wheels with Supermodel but they can be difficult to configure, there used to be a launcher utility called Supermodel UI that had a menu that would set up the input and game settings for you, but it stopped working with the newest builds and has not been updated. You can still use it to generate the config files for an older version of Supermodel, then copy the files to the folder where you have downloaded the newest build, hope this helps!
What difficulty were you on? Specifically difficulty in the Game Assignments section of the arcade board. I usually put down good laps, I don't know how to make it to first place though.
This was done on the default difficulty setting; as far as I know, the difficulty setting only affects how much extra time gets granted by checkpoints and doesn't change the behavior of the other cars, so it simply makes it harder to avoid losing to the timer! You're already half way there to taking first place though; once you know the track, you can then focus on making good clean passes. Draft behind other cars as often as you can to increase your top speed and catch up to the fastest cars and keep drafting to keep your lead, and consider using the Normal or Easy cars for extra maneuverability while passing. Be sure to pass on straights to avoid making contact with the other cars since any bumps will make you lose lots of that hard-earned speed! Finally, push each corner to the limit and practice entering and exiting each one at the highest possible speeds to minimize time losses that add up quick. Good luck out there!!
thank you so much! I was looking for a new version that works properly with Daytona USA 2. Now I can even shift gears with Up/Down buttons on my steering wheel :D

Why no Dreamcast port?? RELEASE THIS ON XBOX AND PS4 NAOW SEGA!
Maybe on the PS5 and Xbox Series X and maybe Steam?
I would include the Switch but it would need more power to run it so wait for the Switch Pro or another console, handheld or Hybrid.
@@madden8021 switch could run this easy. 60 fps all day
2:55 The number 7 car did a nasty move on that car
Is there a method of changing car colors for single player in the new versions of supermodel? the old method of using Emulatenet doesn't seem to work for me anymore.
Where do you get the export version ?
I have only the japanese version with no option to change language.
"this can be changed after entering a password that unlocks the region selector"
How can you unlock this ?
Because, contrary in Model 2 games, region select in Model 3 games is greyed and impossible to select.
I can't remember the password, but I do know it is entered by pushing the VR and service buttons in a specific sequence while the test menu is open; after the password is entered, the region option gets selected and can then be changed 👍
Hornet Classic grand prix chalenge will be nice

What emulator do you use and are you playing with a wheel? Do you know any good tutorial to config both? I need to play Daytona 2 😢
For the emulator, I use Supermodel 3, but be sure to download the latest Release builds from the Supermodel forum here to fix texture and sound problems (don't use the debug version!) www.supermodel3.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1206
I also have used gamepads and wheels with Supermodel but they can be difficult to configure, there used to be a launcher utility called Supermodel UI that had a menu that would set up the input and game settings for you, but it stopped working with the newest builds and has not been updated.
How did you get car textures working properly? On mine the rivals car have some textures bugs☹️
thank you so much! I was looking for a new version that works properly with Daytona USA 2. Now I can even shift gears with Up/Down buttons on my steering wheel :D
@@onepunchdan4986 I was about to say the same thing. Thanks for the info! I may refire up my Daytona play again because of this.
