I was 16, learning martial arts, going to high school and listening to this music on my Walkman, because I passed through the Megadrive's minijack output to a radiocassette and recorded the game's tunes in a cassette.
I had my Genesis hooked up to a stereo with floor standing 3 way speakers. I would play the intro over and over. I never heard bass like that from a video game before.
The second I hear that melody, the instant I turn into a 7 year old kid, with the smell of a fresh Mega Drive cartridge cluttering into my nose, imagining the old CRT in front of me, sitting on my old couch with the toys spread out on the ground. While it's dark and snowy outside, the beautiful SoR title screen would bear me with the light and warmth I needed so much. The melody would lull me into a sense of security. I was always wondering who that Mr. "Yuzo Koshiro", whose name was on the title screen, is. How is he like? What does he do? Where does he live? It was impossible to figure it out, internet was not available to me back then.
Absolutely captured the essence of a pure 80s cop thriller in this soundtrack -just my favorite vibe this sound - it’s why I’m huge into Synth Wave as an adult probably - masterpiece Koshiro-San - 2nd comment
Outstanding sound once again! Always nice to hear old tunes updated to sound better while still keeping the spirit of the original. I love seeing your DAW screen as well. Also, thanks for the WAV downloads!
My wife just yelled at me to turn it down. There is no way I would turn down a Koshiro-san composed masterpiece. Only way the volume goes during this is UP. Thank you,Koshiro-san! Much love and admiration from the United States.
@@demadeefy I will treat her to some as I have lots of his masterpieces on my MP3 player. Going to catch her off guard and if she has "hey...what is this?" that will mean she likes it. All respect must go to a staple in video game music history and that is none other than Koshiro-San!
After what feels like forever, I've finally discovered the person behind the music that has been the backdrop to so many of my nostalgic moments. It's amazing how a melody can transport you back in time, isn't it? A huge shout out to Yuzo Koshiro for creating such a beautiful piece that resonates with so many of us. Your music has truly touched my soul and memories, and I just wanted to express my gratitude.
We are actually watching the master recreate his art. What a time to be alive. Would LOVE to see him recreate "Dub Slash"...the biggest SOR banger, imo.
I can't hold my tears! What a legendary arrangement! 😭 I become very happy to see Koshiro-san still composing and jamming 😊 Great loves from Turkiye!!!
I remember getting this game home. And when the intro music started. I immediately phoned my mate and played it to him over the phone. I couldn't believe that the music we were listening to in clubs was suddenly on a video game.
The more I dig into programming my Yamaha DX7 II-D, the more I understand how difficult it was to make such a beautiful soundtrack with a 4-op FM processor! A true work of genius!
This intro song is timeless. It never gets old. Since I was a kid playing Streets of Rage for the first time, and even to this day, I have it as part of my everyday playlist while I am working, driving, or even relaxing. It's going to be with me to the end.
I'm just a random English speaking comment, but I hope you know your talent crosses all language barriers. When I think of greatest video game sound tracks ever, this one is right up there. You are very talented and you have made so many people happy with your musical talents. Thank you.
i heard this music as a kid and it changed my life, i never would of thought that i would still listen to it 30 years later. Inspires me to create music so i can do the same
Mr. Koshiro, thank you so much for your contributions to the music world. Your Streets of Rage 2 soundtrack is incredibly powerful. Whenever I think about the first time playing it in 1992 when it came packed in with my Sega Genesis I'll always remember being absolutely blown away by the music you implemented in it. If I had to describe it in one word, that word would be "powerful" Because that's exactly what it is. Thanks again for the inspiration. You are tremendously appreciated. Keep up the fantastic work, sir. In the words of Soulcalibur on the Sega Dreamcast.. "The legend will never die."
From learning about you to now sending you comments, I feel like I'm two steps closer to one of my favorite composers of all time. Incredible composer who not only writes excellent music, but also understands the technical parts of synthesis deeply.
Just found this video & channel today. The theme still takes me back to Christmas '92 when my dad first got us a Genesis, along with this game and Sonic 2. This theme in particular never fails to get me to get up and move (I've even had it as my alarm tone for the past 15 years). Koshiro-san, if you see this, I want to thank you for the work you did.
When listening to the original track and your recent mix, I though that the M1 piano would fit perfectly together with the 909 drums. Now I see I wasn't alone :D Thanks for sharing!
I am wanting to recreate that sound, and I am confused. The original M1 piano sound was a sample, but he is using the opsix, which is only fm synthesis, no samples, as far as I know. If anyone has an idea of the patch, like what type of algorithm and what the ratios are, I would love to hear a breakdown, as this is the best FM piano I have heard.
As a kid in the 90s I loved to play Streets of Rage 2. Actually Skate was my favorite character. The soundtrack was way too advanced for its time and at one time I had wondered how to get the songs on a cassette lol. The story song, to me sounded like sadness 1 by Enigma. At the time we all thought that a variant of it was placed in the game. Thanks for this review. Great video as always.
I played hours of SOR 1 and 2. Many years later I would play the sound track on Genesis and listen to all the notes. Finding this channel is a blessing. Thank you Yuzo Koshiro, you are definitely among the greatest of all time.
Just after those first 4 notes immediately you knew exactly what the game and song was. When I was a child you would hear it walking through shopping centers when it was being demoed at game stores. Such a huge nostalgia trip. Thank you for showing us!
I remember playing this game as a child and jamming with my brothers with this soundtrack. Thank you so much for the great times. I really hope more people make great music like you in future games.
Listening to this again sent a shiver down my spine. I loved playing Streets of Rage with my friends. I was 16 at the time, and knew the music track was something special.
Thank you for this masterpiece, Koshiro-san. I remembered when I rented my very first megadrive game was Bare Knuckle. My family was too poor to buy a cartridge at that time. I played this with my brother and when Bare Knuckle 4 comes out, my couch coop was instantly revived.
I can't believe I just discovered this . Thank you sir for some of the best music I've ever heard, And the sweet nostalgia I get when I hear it. Truly a Master of this Craft. ❤
Mr. Koshiro I love your soundtracks so much. They are literally the soundtracks of my childhood. I was obsessed with Sega Genesis and particularly The Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, and Streets of Rage 1 & 2. Getting to see you make this legendary music is so insightful and awesome.
Thanks for doing this. For me(like many others here) street of rage is one of childhood pillars... We appreciate it a lot... I've been listening this music for every single thing... Like training painting or meditating... Muchísimas gracias Yuzo
Listening this while working as software dev in Brussels city. Was playing it in 1992 on Sega megadrive as a kid on saturdays mornings. Thank you very much for the hard work sir.
This is so good to hear. Brings back so many happy memories playing SoR with friends through the years. What stands out for me is how the soundtrack doesn’t feel limited by the Mega Drive’s capabilities. You really used the MD as an instrument.
It fits perfectly with the Korg M1 Piano preset, as it was the legendary instrument of the early 90s. It also gives a more nostalgic touch to the song.
This is the sound of my Childhood, Thank you so much for all of your amazing work and all the hard work you you do Mr. Koshiro it's a true honor to ge able to tell you how much we all appreciate and live your works!!!
I literally spent days worth of hours playing through Streets of Rage to listen to your soundtrack, like a CD. You are a Legend! So glad I found your channel. Thank you so much!
I discovered this franchise quite late in my life, but I still think both the game and the soundtrack are legendary. I'm still amazed how you managed to pull that off using the hardware available at the time. Thank you, Koshiro-San.
Ah I can't get enough of the fizzing electric noise of old BGMs. I was so into it I could listen to the BGMs on the sound and test options for hours with quadraphonic speakers hanging from every corner of the room. So so snazzy and catchy -- made me love the games even more for it 🎵
Incredible. No computer game has music this well composed anymore, limitations, available memory, fitting to loop, thematically resonant - it's flawless. Thank you for showing us!! 😊
what a blessing that I live in an era where I can watch my favorite composer of all time post youtube videos jamming out. truly legendary.
