- This is our live synth performance of the iconic intro songs from Sega Genesis games Streets of Rage 1 and 2, originally composed by Yuzo Koshiro. Please expand description for more info.
As you might have noticed, our arrangement combines both intros for Streets of Rage 1 and 2. The Streets of Rage 1 part goes up to 1:45 min, and then blends into Streets of Rage 2. In 4:19, just after SoR2 climax, we go back from SoR2 to SoR1 and finish as SoR1.
Every melodic line has been transcribed note-by-note from the original arrangements and played live using hardware synthesizers, along with a sampler for drums. No computers were used, no MIDI, no sync.
From left to right, gear list and synth players were:
Korg M1 - França Guimaraes - M1 piano
Sequential Sixtrak - George Frederick - Synth solos #1
Korg Microkorg, Roland Sp404 - Guillermo Caceres - Bass, drum triggering
Yamaha An1x - João Marcos - Synth solos #2
Roland Jx-10 Super Jx - Raul Guimaraes - Pads
For the drums, we used the classic sample from Soul II Soul's Keep on Movin' , originally released in 1989. Recorded with a Tr-909, this drumloop would later become a staple for many electronic productions in the 90's, of which Enigma's Sadeness (1990) is usually the most remembered. It is extremely likely that Koshiro had this exact drum sample in mind when setting the mood for the SoR intro, so it made sense to use it in our version.
The piano sound in the Korg M1 is another interesting case. The M1 had already been available for 3 years in 1991, and was still extremely popular at the time. Its piano sounds found their way into all sorts of arrangements, especially in dance/house music trends, and became one of the most recurrent sounds throughout the 90s. If Koshiro had to choose a preset piano sound to record SoR, this would have to be the one.
The Sequential Sixtrak that plays the solo is quite convincing. The only problem is that it does not offer an option to quickly turn the portamento on/off. So, for some passages, you can see it being edited live.
Our barely functional 30 year old Roland Jx-10 provided us with some of the nicest pads available in the 80's. The sound is a custom layered patch edited from a classic "Soundtrack" preset (think of Alphaville's Forever Young), and makes extensive use of its 12 voices and built-in Roland chorus unit. This would be our personal choice in a SoR recreation anyway, and the Jx was very happy to see some action again.
As usual, please forgive the grainy quality, the shaky cameras and the few misplaced notes, we were just having fun.

You never realize just how delightfully 90s a lot of these Mega Drive compositions sound until you hear them on real instruments. That piano especially, damn this is good.
Amazing. I miss the 90s. I used to go play this game everyday at my friends house down the road. I'd lose sleep with excitement and couldnt wait to go back to play. When the power adapter got hot from continuous play, we'd shutdown the console and wait impatiently for it to cool or put it in the fridge

Great to hear from a fellow remake fan. I 100% agree with you. As much
as I love the original games Bomber Games took everything that was great
about the original series and improved upon it. With the new direction
SEGA is taking, embracing the fan project scene with Sonic Mania it's
possible that they might take another look at SoRR. Maybe they can make a
deal to save the game and bring it to consoles.
Sadly Bomber Games doesn't seem to exist anymore and Bomberlink doesn't
seem to be active in the scene anymore. But one can dream right? :D

If only we could jump in a time machine, set it to the 90s. Play outside and ride our bikes till sundown. Eat pizza while watching ninja turtles and power rangers. Then pop in those cartridges and play video games all night. 😢
Maybe you can.. just organize a day or weekend with some friends to do exactly that and nothing more than that. Be sure to have it all organized beforehand so you don't need to do any cooking and all that stuff. And even better if you have the opportunity to go to some old places you use to hang out with friends as kids. Ok ok, it will never feel 100% like the good old days, but it's gonna be cool and nostalgic anyways!

Nah, I’m listening coz I remember all the way back when everything was just all about that post Cold War/pre Yugoslavian break up mess but, mostly, coz I remember my SEGA Mega Drive, then this game came out round about the same time, and then there was all the other 90s stuff that went along with it.
To be honest I listen to this soundtrack quite regularly.

I literally can't believe how perfectly played it is. Whenever I play something, I always play too fast because I'm nervous. But they nailed it perfectly.

I listened to this numerous times and I can only think of how much of a genius Yuzo Koshiro is. This will forever be part of many players who cherish this masterpiece. Even the famous Dr.Dre sample this theme for the rapper “The Game featuring 50Cent How We Do”. I’m sure Yuzo Koshiro you have to be proud of yourself.

The sense of urgency that this might be the last chance you get is ever present in this theme, it can really be felt in both of these themes, but I personally liked how the sor 2 opening had the iconic slap base tastefully added in there on top of that, and I feel it really helped make the music convey more emotion all around, more so then the original sor opening, you also feel that there is a sad undertone here, along with a longing for revenge it's spot on with the theme of the 2nd game, the music really made these games, If I could spend a day talking/jamming with someone from the video game music industry it would be Yuzo Koshiro he was [back then] and still is a talented musical genius.
I used to stare at the city 🏙 skyline at the start of the game for HOURS just mesmerized by this masterpiece 🎶 still gives me chills to this day ❤️
