Never thought I'd see a PWM compressor again! I'm blown away by how transparent and clean it sounds, considering it's analog. Hats off to Pom for making it work!
Man i like what it does to the sound of the rooms. It does not seam over cooked when your hitting it. I love what it does to the trans. I could go on all day. Something about this comp that I connect with. It does what i hear in my head. Again i love the simple style videos. It works!!! And it helps you know your shit right.... lol
It can really smash things without sounding like it's working too hard or coming apart. The fastest attack is actually how the originals were set. I should have spent more time on that setting. Thanks for chiming in!
Great demo! ! First of all, the sounds you had captured were well done, which is always the best thing going into a compressor. My personal favorite was when you had it on the 1:1 setting and used it more as a saturation tool, because it really thickened up the attack. I haven't used one of these compressors, but I really like the attack to what this unit imparts, especially on snare. I might use it on the snare mic, moreso, or room mics to really smash it (in conjunction with some low end rolloff to de-emphasize some of the low/ lower mid emphasis; I tend to roll off quite a bit of room lows). I'm an 1176 guy on an overall drum set, SSL 4000E for various flavors of shaping/ compressing/etc, but I could really see using this in various ways.
I felt the same way when I first heard it. But part of the fun of all these options is that each is unique! Pick your favorite flavors and go make some music!
Man I love that sound! Acustica has a PWM comp in their "Secret" channel strip and I love it for drums. It has punch but it has some very smooth harmonics too. I'm envious of you having the actual hardware. Lol.
sounds incredibly good. reminds me of my vintage adr compex. despite the fact it should be closer to the emt156, great river pwm501 or crane song stc8, being a pwm type compressor, too. would be interesting to compare against waves kramer pie.
I used to own a Compex and loved that as well. I like the idea of comparing it to the pluging. I used to own the Kramer, but I don't think I have WAVES installed on my system anymore.
Very nice and thank you! Looks like Ill have to order mine direct as they list no dealers on their site. Should go nicely with the Chandler TG1, Overstayer Mod Channel, Shadow Hills & Tubetech stuff I have (in my fantasy)
Yes, it's direct order only. You get on a waiting list, but the Pye units aren't a long wait. My POM Fairchild with original transformers was about a 3 year wait. And it is a nice compliment to the other units you mentioned! I have my Pye next to my Overstayer Modular Channel!
Curious how the new Avedis PYE will compare. This one sounds pretty great. Although I can’t imagine making a hardware compressor nowadays and not adding a wet/dry control. Maybe they just want to be true to the original, but imagine what you could do with a blend control. It would make it 10x as useful IMO.
Yes, I'm curious how it compares as well. I do appreciate blend controls, but the lack of a wet/dry hasn't been an issue. I use Logic, which has a wet/dry control included in its hardware I/O plugin, so I just use that, or bring it up on a separate fader. Both of those options are saved and automated within the session, where a blend control on the box would not be.
I still like my Creation Audio MW1. It‘s a bit more feature rich (multiple outputs to amps, continuous impedance control, seperate ground-switch for all outputs) and rackmountable. For the satelites function I use a Mercenary Audio STD (because, you know, Fletcher 😅). That said, Eric‘s stuff is always great, love his MPEQs!
@@acklin83 I was confused for a moment because this comment is posted on the Pye compressor video, but now I understand! I’m unfamiliar with the creation audio stuff, but I’ll check it out!
@@davidpetersmusic Sorry about the wrong video comment - I was binging through your stuff while typing and somehow ended up pressing send 3 videos down the road 🙈
Sounds great, sounds like Rock n Roll to me. A shame that they didn't put a dry/wet dial in it. Would be great to use the 1:1 ratio in parallel directly from the unit.
Really cool.. Thanks for sharing :) Can i ask is the ambience on the drums real or a plugin/reverb.. it sounds really good.. love how it breaths when its compressed. Thanks again for making these videos..
The drum ambience is all room mics, no reverbs! I do occasionally put a Bricasti across the whole drum mix on a room setting. The guitars on the Under the Rug song do have ambience on them from an old RMX16. I hope that helps!
@@tihinter These drums are from a session a few years ago. The drums were recorded in a good-sized living room with probably up to 12 or so mics on the drums, including room mics. A lot of the room sound comes from mics around the corner in the kitchen.
Loving these videos - thanks so much. It almost sounds like a mix between a diode bridge - with a slower release than the neves - and a VCA. on AGTRs seems like it can control very nicely. I do feel like this could do a great job on a fingerstyle bass - especially with that low mid push and the musical punch, without the overly transformer colored sound which can sometimes smear bass sounds in my opinion
Thanks! It does remind me of diode bridge compressors - more toward the TG1 side of things. Believe it or not, there are SIX big Carnhill transformers in there! I did try it on an electric bass and it wasn't as complimentary as I expected it to be. I have not yet tried it on upright.
@@davidpetersmusic sorry i meant slower *attack times. The neves have ridiculously slow release times for modern music (and these to be fair look like they can be set that way as well). Funny about the transformers! Maybe thats why its not as “punchy” as one may expect, PWM can theoretically be very very fast, I didnt realize that about the unit. Sad to hear that about the bass. Are you thinking of keeping it? Seems like a rather expensive drum buss compressor- though it does sound really nice in that capactity
I think they're pretty average price-wise - cheaper than an API 2500, TG-1, some SSLs, etc. It's a nice balance/alternative to the Overstayer SFE, which is the other piece that often gets used on drums lately. No plans to move on from it at the moment, but who knows! And my bass attempts were brief, it might be great there given a little more time.
Sounds R&R classic and therefore great! 💯🤘🏻🚀 Shame about that horrible ground buzz on your voice mic, though, really annoying and takes away from the professionality of the whole presentation. 🤷🏼♂️
@@davidpetersmusic Maybe the lavalier got caught in the 60s vibe of the whole thing and was attempting some through-zero slow flanging in collaboration with the lights creating... a buzz! Gr@@vy?! 😉😉✌🏼

It does have a sonic vibe to it with the 6 big transformers inside, but the compression is really smooth and natural!
The way the snare changed when you played the whole track with the Pom in was insane!
@@Boleskinebeatz It’s a natural box, but not a subtle one!

PWM is such a rare type of compression and apparently hard to do, but it can be really nice when done right!
@ Being a drummer myself, I can hear how it really punches up the dynamics and brings out the ghost notes.
Interesting the long attack gives me a bit of a dbx 160/166 vibes with the transient/curve.
They are very different box in some ways, but I do tend to use them in the same places. Interesting!
Weren’t they going to make an actual PYE reissue? I remember seeing it namm 2022 or 2023
