  • Stephen Sackur talks to a man with a remarkable story which has earned him accolades and admiration around the world. Sir Nicholas Winton is now 105 years old. When he was just 29 he helped rescue more than 600 mostly Jewish children from Nazi persecution in Czechoslovakia. He hates being labelled a hero but Sir Nicholas Winton is living proof that individuals can make an extraordinary difference. What motivated him?

l wrote him a thank you letter in about 2005 and got a thank you note back! What an honor for me. What an incredible being. He taught me some valuable lessons and before Covid I managed to get six Venezuelans with dual nationality to Spain where they could live with plenty of food, medical care and in decency. Sir Nicholas, thank you for making me a better human being and affecting lives of six more people you could say. The only reason I talk about it is to motivate others to do it, and it has worked!

@@DrumToTheBassWoop how did I do it? All it took was buying airline tickets one way to Madrid; they all had Spanish citizenship. But couldn't afford to buy tickets. I'm getting five more out but they had to wait because they were lacking the Venezuelan passport needed to get out of the country. This is the wife and four kids of the first one that I got out who's living in Spain since 2 years now and has been working very hard to send them money. This is probably the most gratifying thing I've ever done. And they all asked me, how can I repay you. And I replied you already have, just being able to have the opportunity to get you out has repaid me. All I want is when you see somebody in need is to help them and then ask them to help somebody else and it forms a chain.

Checkeslova became a hell hole for jews when the Nazi moved in. The beast of Budapest, Rynhard Heydrich was more sadistic and brutal than his boss Himmler.
Watch the movie called "Anthropoid " is features the brave actions of the Chech underground and the eventual assassination of Hydrich in the town of Lidice.
After the assassination, Hitler had 199 men and boys in the town of Lidice shot and a further 195 women deported to the death camps.

I wish teenagers today in protest would watch a show about the Holocaust and more than that learn something about this man.
I urge everyone to see this man's story. Jewish people have always been persecuted. Mainly because they are God's chosen people. Read please read the Bible and it will tell you in the last days people will turn on Israel. And that's happening now. Every knee will bow. Remember that. These teenagers need to know that.

The question about why he did all those good deeds when he wasn't even religious is just so disrespectful to atheists. You don't need religion to be a good person, you need good ethics. You need to know what is right and wrong and when to stand up for those things. Sir Winton is the embodiment of that idea.

I agree ! If one percent of the children and grandchildren of the Prague escape had the conviction to repay the fact that they are alive due to another person's bravery and resilience and make a stand to save the children in Gaza, it would make an great difference. So far, after six months of slaughter by the IDF not one of these descendants of the Prague escape has come out publicly and spoken for the children of Gaza. That is disgraceful.

Have any of these people Nickolas saved, come forward and made any attempt to save the poor children in Gaza who are living on the brink of death every day. Winton, Oscar Schindler and Count Folk Bernadott saved 12,000 jews destined to be murdered in Hitler's death camps, but where are all the children and grandchildren of those 12,000 survivors today when Israel is murdering thousands of innocent women and children in Gaza. Not one of them who were saved by two non jews, and Winton has had the courage to stand up for the children in Gaza who live each day of their lives minutes away from IDF bombs, and sniper bullets.

The interviewer had to quite literally force him to accept that what he did was most heroic and truly worthy of honour. But Mr Winton just shrugged his shoulders! Truly humble, respect.

    • @garybills710
      @garybills710 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

maybe it wasn't heroic at all, I think this is the message he was trying to convey. Right place, right time, right person, the interviewer is forcing heroism on him again, even after a clear statement that what he achieved was a simple process of organisation. We cannot label him, only he was there, only he knows.

I love that about him, as you do... because that is the gift that he brings to all others... the whole circus of being made into a hero for publicity purposes, given what he did, is really dark... love how direct he was about this. That in some ways is the example of some one who has the greatest integrity and humanity... it all seems so silly in comparison to the actuality that happened.... such a heart break

What an amazing and extraordinary human being. Puts humanity to shame that still today the world has not learnt from the past and suffering and atrocities still go on. Yes there are good people that put themselves out there to help but it feels like a drop in the ocean. There is too much suffering today that should not be the case. Can mankind be a better species. It would make the world a better place we are evolving technologically but not as better human beings enough.

I share Nicholas Winton's outlook on life. He listened to his humanity and had the strength to do the right thing where others would have turned their backs and walked away. I admire him greatly for this. I also share his pessimism. Nothing about the world changes. It is the doom of men they forget, do the same mistakes and make a mess of things. Now war is spreading again. 'I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.'

I felt for Nicky Winton when Sacker was asking him about why he did things and he said 'ethnics'. He then explained VERY CLEARLY when asked to what he meant and it just went over the interviewers head. It didn't compute. It didn't connect. At that split instant I saw that Nicky Winton had a whole life of saying things like that to people when asked, and that for nearly all of those times just like Sacker the simple wisdom and truth did not properly register. People want to hear a more complex and fancy solution to things and they don't want to hear about plain old simple ethics. But I get what you are saying Nicky Winton. I get it and you are bang on right. And you are right about the past being too much in the present news too.
Incidentally, I wonder how Nicky reacted when he found out that he was wrong about one thing, that there is existence after death. That life is the dream and so when he died, that is when he awoke, he discovered that he had had the best nights sleep ever. Sweet dreams Sir Nicky/ . You are one of the few who truly deserves every honour you were given and you should have got the nobel peace prize too.

In the face of some of the worst that us humans are capable of, we also find some of what the best of humans are capable of.
I'm writing this in April, 2017 - shortly after the publication of the very finest book I've ever read - "On Tyranny" by Prof Timothy Snyder. If you don't think this can happen again, read this very short and very readable book, which focuses on Trump and what happened in the 1930s and 40s. Buy it. share it.

Roll on another 5 years to May 2022, and tyranny is upon us all; an insidious creeping evil that leapt forward during the PLANdemic which was the means to roll out the agenda of total surveillance and control of the world population including its numbers. A mantra Resist -Defy - Do not comply is our only way forward, that and believing that a new world of peace and harmony will eventually be ours.

Actually he saved 699 children. Of those initial 699 say they had four children, that gives us 2796 children of the survivors, multiple that figure by another four and you get 11184 grandchildren stil living in England. Today when children are being slaughtered in even larger numbers by percent of population in Gaza, it is sad to see not one of those 11184 grandchildren and 2796 children of the Budapest escape has stood up publicly and spoke out on behalf of the children in Gaza who live daily on the brink of death.

I think he's a great man. But he would find it depressing that people think doing a little bit in order to save lives = "great". As he himself said: what he did was done at very little risk to himself. Compare that with say a Westerner (standing out like a sore thumb) going in to Syria to help out with IS running around... When they get their head cut off, they die as a "naive fool", not "great person". Weird world we live in.

Saving lives remains much ignored by most Getting 84 British soldiers out of Beirut before a terrorist exploded a truck bomb at the entrance. No one noticed, but they lived another day. All it takes is to act. Success isn't numbers, its another day of opportunity, often with no idea what someone else has done. Sometimes it is n3ecessary to take life to prevent bad happening. Save the innocent.
