Omg Aimee, I could absolutely cry. I'm a guy that has a deep voice like this kid, and I've been struggling so hard to understand the difference between chest voice and head voice. And you just made it click for me after months of trying to wrap my head around it.
You really are an amazing person. Someone who can play so skillfully and has such a profound understanding and ability to articulate and explain these little things are why I keep coming back to your videos to learn. I'm such a fan, and can not thank you enough for the effort you've done to share your lessons on TH-cam like this.

It's ok. Vocal range is definitely expandable. My voice didn't drop as dramatically (high baritone) and when I first started singing when I was 15, my highest note was about F4-F#4, now I can hit a Bb4-B4 in my chest voice. I've even seen lower voices than me be able to expand their range in the high tenor range as well.

this video is great! as a girl with a lower voice I've struggled a lot with matching in the right register. I got some vocal training for a year and there was a HUGE difference with my ease of learning with my first instructor with a naturally high voice and my second who was naturally low. It made matching her through excersize and songs WAY easier! it's so important. Because of your video I popped onto my note recognition app and did what you asked him, to sing a comfortable note (f#3) and then I sang from my comfortable ( horizontal- I am listening in bed haha) lowest to highest chest voice note and found it was an even D octave from 3-4 and that was super interesting and totally matched with on-the-go observations I've had about my comfort. That's super awesome, thanks for helping me get a super easy, clear read on my own self! I love how positive this video is as well. Great message, great approaches, and really valuable real time example. Thanks for sharing your learning, Mateas, that's really brave!

  • @whengrapespop5728

He approached it from higher, because for men, there's a "ledge" in our voice (right about where he said it became uncomfortable) which makes a smooth transition challenging (like balancing a ball on you finger, it would 'tip' over quicker if the weight falls to much to one side, which is kind of what we feel in our chest). Approaching it from a higher note allows us to skip the transition from low to high, or the "ledge", but it's a different feeling in our chest than if we were to get to the same note from below the transition. It is, however, possible to use your voice enough to be able to get to the same high note without the "tipping ball" effect, 'pushing' the transition higher up by finding the "balance point' of the ball while 'lifting it higher'.

      passagio

    • @Timliu92
      @Timliu92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup, it is called the 'bridge' or passaggio. Mine starts around E4, and if I am not careful in approaching my vowels or volume around that area, singing higher becomes problematic.
It really is a game of balance - you do not want to pull too much weight into that area, but you also do not want to let go too much to the point that you sound weak and hooty. Vocal teachers typically call that area your 'mix voice'.

This is a wonderful demonstration! I sometimes notice that if someone is aware that they aren't singing up to their standard, they may kind of back off from committing themselves to produce the note as well as they really can. When that happens, they may still be trying hard but not allowing full use of their air (diaphragm support). They could also be tensing up the throat area (the larynx goes up) in trying to get the note out - which may lead to fatigue pretty early in their attempts and maybe they think that the tension is something to be pushed through. There is a pretty cool exercise to get rid of all of those issues and it is called the "lip roll" exercise. It can really help to maintain a consistent flow of air past the vocal chords while simultaneously reinforcing the relaxation of the throat muscles.

Such a great teacher, and your student is such a good sport. This brings back SO many memories of adolescence, some of them quite painful. I was in the 4th grade when my voice changed, and it convinced me I could never sing. Well, I’m still well below average, but my voice now has about the same range as his, and I can do hymn melodies about an octave below the sopranos, though it makes me feel uncomfortably feminine...

It's Thai! Well, first I'm glad I don't have perfect pitch but relative pitch because p. p. can have many downsides (for example playing sheet music on an transposing Instrument which can freak you out). Also perfect pitch is extremly rare and I just stated that she DOESN'T HAVE TO HAVE it. Of course it could be.

    • @dominicknoll7398
      @dominicknoll7398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

It's Thai! She does have perfect pitch. But @mo newcame is right. If you have good relative pitch, you can determine the notes he sang based off of the notes that were previously played.

Interesting. I'm a guy, and well I have a close friend who is also a musician. We are 23 now, but when we were 14, we really struggled with high notes. When I took vocal lessons in college I would sometimes have to resort to the head voice. Last few years I've only been singing as a hobby: no warmup, no notes, sometimes jazz; no lyrics. My vocal register has changed a bit. When I went high, my voice would crack and deviate to head voice. Now, however, I can only sing a few notes higher, but the transition from high to head voice is sweet and comfortable. It feels like opening and closing holes on a flute. _Meanwhile,_ my friend has taken singing seriously and even uploads covers to TH-cam once in a while, and his voice has gone an octave higher, definitely. It's loud and clear and he has really become a great vocalist.
When we started out, I would dare say that I had the upper hand. I used to sing in a choir, and also had a pretty clear voice (although my register was very narrow and also I was easily out of breath. My friend on the other hand used to take metal music really seriously. He became excellent at so-called growling or grunting techniques over the summer one year, and I honestly think he has a talent for that still. (I know that's not everybody's cup of tea, but he had a serious passion for it. It wasn't muddled burping like you're used to hearing. His was consonant, pronounced and admirable. It might have affected his lung capacity for the better.)
So there is definitely hope for guys.. Singing is something you have to do and keep doing, hopefully for the rest of your life. You can only become better at it.

That's a brave young man, btw!! Not many other men his age would have agreed to join in the demonstration. And I've read below that someone mentioned my thought already, but this is true! Ms.Nolte, you are a great teacher! You not only share an easier approach to understanding, but you encourage the desire to learn more by helping them through the sticky stuff, and when you pointed out his "approach" to that high note, his face lit up and he wasn't uncomfortable about singing through it.
I'm a singer here in Honolulu.. I learned, by imitation in the beginning.. And was always poked fun of by friends, when I sang in school events. Now, they call to hire me to sing for events.. When ever you get a chance (do it now😬) check out the music (Nā Palapalai).
Once again, great job on here. You are changing the way people use their ears.. You are showing people, including me, what to listen for and it's fun!

I’ve been singing for several years without any proper training or teaching. Most my family sings low and all but one of my brothers sing bass. Like really deep bass. But since we usually sing as a group I am the highest of my bros so I had to learn to sing up high. Even tho I’m probably a baritone by nature, I normally sing as a tenor now. And even sometimes if I go into falsetto I can a high c or on a good day a high e. So I honestly think most people can sing high if they practice at it.

I've been watching your videos for the last few days. I'm not a musician, but as a great appreciator of music, I'm loving hearing about your processes and all the depth that goes into why you think some stuff is "cool" and other stuff is "a mess." I've wondered why humans like music for the longest time, and you put this idea in me that music is a conversation, and we like it for many of the same reasons. The conversations you create and are drawn to are more fascinating than anything I can generate because of my limited musical vocabulary, but you're an incredibly nice person. I don't detect a lick of snobbishness in you despite your abilities. I watch the videos because I think/hope your genuineness, passion and kindness will rub off on me it's as special as your jazz chops.

I recall starting to work on my Grade 4 Clarinet certificate pieces (?aged 13) when my teacher announced near the end of the lesson that there was an additional component to the test she had not previously mentioned of singing - my heart fell and I announced I could not sing. That was an unfortunate admission, as she then disclosed that her other job was as an opera coach and stated no one could not be taught to sing! We did not gel on this issue and after a couple months she reluctantly concluded that my inability to hit the note I could hear in my head was not something she could correct. Come the examination itself, the examiner interrupted me during the first piece as he feared I was playing the wrong piece for Grade 5, and I glumly advised I was in the right level and he should wait for the singing section. Come the end he awarded me my grade 4, said that I was proficient to grade 5, hoped I would enjoy my continued clarinet playing, but sadly should not consider applying for grade 5 as the singing would not carrying me through. I've always wondered since if this was just myself as a teenager being difficult, whether a different approach might have got better results (I'm sure my clarinet teacher was perfectly competent), or if there is an optimum age to develop singing skills. Reality TV singing shows delight in showing the unskilled warbling away, and yet other TV programmes show that previously untrained group of people can be coached into a delightful choir en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Choir_(TV_series) - so why do we (i.e. likes of me) think we can't sing ?

I hate hearing stories like this. Only a small percentage of people are truly "tone deaf". Most people just lack 1. Muscular coordination and 2. Association of these muscular sensations to pitch. I teach people who are horrible singers to be much better all the time. Don't listen to your non-informed grade school music teachers--they are not professional voice instructors. Feel free to check out my site (Google search: Brian Lin Voice Studio) and contact me if you have any vocal questions.
Not everyone can be taught to a pro level, but almost everyone can be taught to at least a decent level (equivalent of decent high school skill level).
Good luck on your singing journey my friend!
      Sincerely,
      Brian

I can mix a D5 but when I try to sing a higher note It sounds very light like head voice. My lowest note is C2 in chest I guess and highest in falsetto/head voice A7. I'm almost 15 and people don't expect me singing that high. I just practice every day and I know my limit. Hope this helps you 😇😊JUST KEEP PRACTICING

Not sure how this helped of how to sin high? This subject really interests but what I heard was there is a head voice and a chest voice but not how to blend these two which I'm sure can be done, otherwise a guy is either screaking or singing in a thin falsetto?

One tech I've learned is taking a note slightly above your chest range with head voice. Then while continuing to sing in head voice, open the tone up and add push to it and it will turn into a chest voice note above your range in 2 weeks. I had a problem with it cause my cords won't close with head voice so I can't vocal fry at all. I really don't go higher than A 440 Hz.
I did extend my bottom from a working G down to a working E, by just singing the lower notes. G,F,E,D even if it was mostly air. Db is a no can do. But E became a working E in 2 weeks. Learning to use air is the thing. It's like a balloon but with no air pressure, cords have nothing to work with to produce a tone.

This comment is late, but I hope his singing is easier for him! I myself had a super small range, and just last summer had trouble going above middle C. Now I can go up to G4, and A4 on a better day. (Falsetto range is E5). It's all about consistent practice, and good luck to him. (Also about my total range, D2-A4)

I like the analogy of someone stepping in front of a moving car. I usually tell someone to project their voice like your sibling is about to knock the TV over, not quite yelling! All the greatest vocalists sing at a attention grabbing volume. It also helps to pretend your about to dive into a pool and swim to the other side, you take as big and deep a breath as you can, very similar conditions. With that volume of air, it's difficult to sing wrong!

I was always envious of tenors. It's taken me years and years to realize, yes, I too can sing up high as well. I was just too shy/timid to push it loud enough to reach those notes; without going into my head voice. Keep working on it guys. Relax and keep practicing.

My coach had me really relax to feel muscle memory engage. It was a hard time learning how to trust it. This is what everyone is doing as they sing. You relax your face, do a exercise over a song. For me it's Muh, muh, muh. I leave more space in between my teeth to tell my self I don't need to those muscles to get involved. All you need is to do is the lyrics. It's hard to explain to students and it takes sometimes years for them to solve it. I sing in the female range consistently cause I like drivers license. I had an hour conversation with my coach about this once I discovered it. Its just like playing guitar but it's a intuitive thing as well.

So the only way for men going through puberty to sing high is being obnoxiously high on the chest notes? I was hoping for more of a quiet, falsetto type of high note that I had before my voice dropped

  • @realmahadeo

I love singing and been playing guitar and singing for the last 15 years or so. I have never been happy though with my singing. I was kind of OK within my comfortable range, but have never been able to hit higher notes. Maybe I could have just practiced more. However now, after about 3-4 months of vocal classes, I have been able to change the way I produce the higher notes and I am much more comfortable with singing high. Of course still a long way to go, but without these 3-4 months of vocal coaching, I would still have been at the same level as for the last 15 years. So my response to the video title would be: Men you can TOTALLY sing up high if you invest some time and learn the proper vocal technique -- breathing, diaphragm, mouth position etc. Good luck!

Great video ... years ago this was something they taught in schools. There is just one thing I would add to help Mateus and it has to do with posture. We sometimes get into habits that interfere with having a free and relaxed transition between head and chest voice. By simply rolling his shoulders up and back he might find power and that extra breath for those long notes and less tense neck muscles.

Favorite high tenors in pop music: Steve Perry; Freddie Mercury, Lou Gramm, Kelly Hansen, Daryl Hall, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, Al Green, Graham Nash, and (begrudgingly) Adam Levine. Brian Wilson and Carl Wilson, with Carl given the slight edge of his older brother who gave him "God Only Knows" to immortalize.

That's right. The key is to get guys to use the higher sounds they normally use on a daily basis to vocalize the note instead of trying to sing it at first. We have high voice inflection when we get excited, laugh, shout, or cheer during a football game (woo-hoo). I don't actually worry about specific notes. In fact, once I demonstrate it and they copy it, we find that they are actually vocalizing G4, A4 or higher without realizing it. If I play the note on the piano for a beginner first, then they usually automatically think it's too high and get weak. To get them to connect their cords well, I have them pretend they are a baby crying. If they can get over the embarrassment of making these "weird noises," they can start to realize they can vocalize higher than they think (way higher than middle C) and easily up to C5 and beyond.

Just a few questions about this falsetto i've never heard of, but it turned out i've been doing this my whole life but didn't know what it was. When you study vocal pedagogy, can you make this falsetto be your regular voice, from your chest or it will keep being the same? If a singer is defined as tenor, does it mean he could also produce falsetto and reach soprano notes?
With that being said, I have to tell you about a thing I tried while i was taking the shower. It turned out, to me at least, that my music range was expanded while i was taking a shower. You should try it out, would love to hear the explanation for that, more than what happens to the voice while the throat is hot.

diaphragmatic breathing!! That is so important. and to expand the chest range takes practice and learning different techniques like correct placement, relaxation, raising the soft palate. but before doing that, work on breathing from the Diaphragm. This kid could probably go a little higher with the correct technique. But what I do love about this teaching style is that she works with what is comfortable. That is very important.

I think a lot of guys are so comfortable with singing with chest voice when they're younger, and for me what helped to get me out of that state was to sing in my car to music I was really passionate about. You have to free yourself of all your barriers to discover your head voice (for most guys).
You really have to push and warm up, but I'm confident that any baritone can find these powerful tones necessary to sing the notes that normally feel out of reach with a lower chest voice.

Singing that Queen song in Falsetto will not sound quite right. I do it 9 half steps below Freddy. I can vocalize 4 octaves but only 3 are usable. You are right he should eventually be able to get to middle c. It used to be high for me, in fact, now I use it for the word free in the Star Spangled Banner, it sounds climactic and I can then reach the high c an octave above, for that octave climax. My very top note in full voice is G#4, but I can only touch it briefly. F#4 is what I use for my top climax note. He will eventually reach possibly an A4 with ease.

So I'm not a guy, but I am a transgender woman. Before, my comfortable range would have been from about F2 to C4. But I've been taking singing lessons and my teacher is *amazing* at helping me increase my high end. My comfortable range has shifted up to about G3 to C5, and with some effort I can go to about F5. It's just an awful lot of practice and trying to just nudge the range up without staying at the high end for a long time and tiring out the voice.
