    Mike thanks for putting this unique tool on the show.
    I got the hydraulic crimping tool on Tuesday. This is an awesome tool, makes perfect crimps. The pliers that come with it are super sharp, the dyes are well machined, and most importantly, the crimps fit as they should.
    I have found that a lot of crimping tools are not always properly machined, they are either too narrow, or so thin that it is hard to seat the crimp for proper alignment. I have also seen some tools bend due to poor sizing and inadequate materials. After the crimp is completed, the crimp itself is not even, and appears "incomplete". This tool eliminates those issues and it is well worth the money!
    Works great on 200 & 300 LB test monofilament tuna leader for rigging large offshore fishing lures. This kit comes with a pair of white gloves, an odd part of the kit, but they come in handy here in Utah. Very fashionable, LMAO

    Hey Mike, keep us informed on how those hold up. I was actually researching this type of crimper last week and it seemed some people had a problem with some of the cheap ones leaking hydraulic fluid. Not specifically the ones you have, but the yellow ones on Amazon. Several channels recommended Temco brand. Some of the other cheap brands don't have the spring in the handle, and you have to pull it back up after each pump. Major pita.

    Ideally you'd want to orient your lug 90 degrees so that if you do get "wings" they will be on the side where they are less likely to stab another wire that might run over the top of this one. More likely to have a cable running over the top of another than be parallel to another to the point they are touching.

    Back when I was in field operations for a telecom I was always on a ladder using those, that was never fun. The day they bought us the electric crimps (looks like a cordless drill with a crimp head)was awesome. Anyway you are right, making a solid connection is key. When you are working on larger cables those are the only tool to have. It is amazing how one weak crimp makes the whole thing fall apart. Having that wire pop out in an enclosure could be a nightmare with these large batteries.

    Harbor Freight sells the exact same tool with a different paint job, but I don't think it's cheaper there. And the cable cutters are sold separately there, but you do get a lifetime guarantee on the cable cutters, and you could place a plan on the crimper and replace it every 2 years dirt cheap

    I have to agree. Those things work great. As a companion tool, I would suggest looking into a ferrule set. These make stranded wire connections that are not crimped to be much more sound.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh I've got one of those too lol! Not for this big of wire though.

    • @NickFrom1228
      @NickFrom1228 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hamradiotube I figured you did. The comment was mostly for others. Quite true about the wire size though, most people are going to use on much smaller wires.
      As for the hydrolic crimper, when I was setting up my station I needed to build a ground system so bought some braided wire strap and crimped the connectors with the tool Was instantly sold on the usefulness of the tool. They also work for making those wire rail things for decks and stairwells.

    I didn’t like how the excess portion of the terminal sort of oozed out. I like the hammer type crimper myself.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah I noticed that too. It didn't do it on the 1/0 terminals I crimped. They could just be crappy Chinese terminals I was using but I really don't know. Either way it's a solid crimp.

    A lot of comments on amazon says it leaks oil after a few uses, doesn't work after a few uses or just becomes hard to handle
    Did you had this experience?

  • @ericklein5097
    @ericklein5097 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    These crimper sets are down to $30 or $35 if you shop around. Just look at the die set carefully and try to buy one that appears to have dies that don't look like shit. Obviously if you're in the USA and use AWG and you can find one with AWG dies that would be better but you can work with MM2 metric dies and find one that'll crimp your wire right.

    • @ericklein5097
      @ericklein5097 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh shit this comes with a set of cable cutters.....and that'll set you back $10 to $20 depending on the quality you buy so having a set of cable cutters that'll probably do up to 2/0 easily is a pretty damn good deal. Especially since the die set on this is a bit smaller than usual which is probably what most of us want.

  • @3henry214
    @3henry214 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Cool... do you think it could be used for crimp on co-ax connectors too??

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some of them maybe? I mean, I used my Coax die for LMR-400 to crimp my 1/0 AWG wire. I'm sure there's some cross over in sizes but you might be better off getting a crimper for coax in the long run.

    You skipped over a close up shot of the "wings" caused by the crimp, because the die size did not match the terminal dimensions.
