    Sub Zero being the originals younger brother (older brother becomes Noob Saibot) and Jade as the green female ninja are well established MK characters 🤔

      Yes, Sub-Zero in this film is Grandmaster Kuai Liang and he seek a revenge just because his elder brother (the former Sub-Zero a.k.a Grandmaster Bi Han) was died and accidentally resurrected by Quan Chi as a corrupted ninja named Noob Saibot, yeah, I wish I was right but, maybe the others has another opinion about that..

    In the book 'Lights, Camera, Game Over!' author Luke Owen interviewed some of the cast & and crew involved in this. Apparently New Line took the unfinished movie from them and said 'it's good enough, we don't care if it's unfinished'. Kasanoff says: "I'm telling you the effects in that movie are not the final effects. I never anticipated that
    someone would take the movie go, 'it's good enough'. We weren't done. We never finished that movie. But the studio said, 'we don't care'. We sacrificed quality for business.
    What we should have done is say 'let's go back to Thailand for a week, go back to Jordan for a week and then shoot in the studio for two weeks and add this much in effects. No problem. But the studio had release date and they promised theaters they can have the Mortal Kombat movie. And at this point I realized we'd come too far. But the business thought was it's going to work anyway. I should have insisted that we wait. Not wait years, but six months later. I mean, we would have missed the media bump off the TV series, but we could have Christopher back, we would have a lot of people back whose schedules didn't permit them coming back and it would have been a much better movie."

    I actually went to the mortal kombat live tour. It wasnt that bad ( I was around 7yrs old). the worst part was Scorpion. We were all waiting for his signature "Get Over Here" and when the time came ,you clearly see the actor go into his pocket and pull out one of those KOOSH bungee balls. the koosh ball and cord lit up up so they turned of the lights. then scorpion yells "get over here" throws his Koosh and then proceeds to spin it over his head as if were a lasso

    A few things about this movie that killed it for me were
    Johnny Cage gets killed too early
    We see Khans face
    Sub-Zero wasnt used that much
    Rain gets killed for a dumb reason
    We dont see Kabal and Stryker
    Shinnok is Khan & Raiden's Father
    Jade is played by a Chinese woman instead of a Black woman

    • @kimt3905
      @kimt3905 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think so too for the most of the fight scenes, it was pretty well shot and choreographed. bad script, bad special effect, and many of the actors/actresses here are pretty bad at acting too. Except for like a few where its pretty decent to good like the person that played kitana is like B list actress, so it the guy the played raiden who i think its like B list actor too. he doesn't have the charisma as the first guy that played raiden in the first movie but i thought his voice acting is good enough. i think other b list casts beside them are sonya, sub-zero, and possibly jax. i give the woman that played sindel B- for voice acting. C list casts are Liu Kang who i think is like C-, shao kahn is a firm C for me. sheeva and motaro is like C+. i think the worst voice acting cast is jade. her facial expression is decent but her voice acting is really bad. i think she is like a D list actress, her acting was bad enough that i almost wanted to give her D- for that. there are other too that i can't remember. oh yeah, i thought the guy that played shinnok is quite good i give him B- for the acting in this movie. he has some charisma too. this movie has potential to be decent to pretty good mostly if only the script is good. i can somewhat overlook the bad special effects and many bad acting but the story is laughable like the reviewer of this video said.

  • @bucky90269
    @bucky90269 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not going to defend this movie too much, because it certainly wasn't good. But the guy narrating and who I presume made this movie clearly isn't a MK fan. He sarcastically comments about Jax having metal arms, even though Jax has metal arms in the game. Then he craps on the fact that sub-zero's younger brother is there to avenge his brothers death, even though that is canon in the games. And then he calls Jade an unexisting character... I'm not totally opposed to some cynical criticism, but it would be nice if the person doing the critiquing actually put some research in.

    This movie had its CGI all redone after it was finished production. For whatever reason, it was decided the existing CGI was not right. They then farmed it out to artists with not a lot of experience and did not give them a lot of time.
    It is why the budget is so bloated.
    When I was following the production of this movie while waiting for it to come out, this was really confusing.
    Also; all the ninjas overperform and gesture like Power Rangers whenever they talk. In fact...the whole movie seems to flip flop back and fourth between trying to he MK, and trying to be PR.

    Was $30m a lot of money for a movie budget back then? Kinda... but not really... maybe? ... depends on the genre, the ambition of the producers and the goal of the studio
    If this was meant to be a massive summer blockbuster then maybe they thought $30m was a lot back then... but they also had so many characters to cast (badly), costumes/makeup to design/apply (hit and miss) and a metric ton of varying levels of early-ish CGI to apply throughout, that I dare say that it could been even worse.
    I mean, imagine if they had cast a really young Nicolas Cage as Johnny Cage... would I openly want to see that??? No. Would I secretly want to? Sort of?
    I don’t know know how long the production took, but if the studio demanded that the movie get pushed out on a short-window of time, plus the plethora of CG, plus the sheer amount of “story” to try to focus on, it’s no wonder that it turned out as bad as it did
    Still objectively better than Super Mario Bro’s IMO and Masters of the Universe... at least MK tried to stick to the (slim) amount of lore that exists in the MK games and keep most all the characters accurate in their appearances... main exception being Rayden
    To its credit, it actually put forth a good budget, but technology couldn’t meet expectation... or maybe they outsourced their effects to studios that have zero sh*ts and just ran off with the money...
    The terrible Ghost-Rider sequel (Nicolas Cage name drop #2 🤢) had a $50m budget and while I know movie effects/CGI is far more cost effective and has tremendously higher quality because there are just so many more studios creating it, let it sink in that MK: Annihilation came out almost 2 decades before Ghost-Rider 2, had vastly more characters to work with, has better actors... yes I said it; Ghost Riders acting was worse to me than MK: Annihilation, come at me!... and even a better plot than Ghost-Rider
    If they had made Mortal Kombat: Annihilation the same year as Ghost-Ride: Spirit of Vengeance and kept the movie exactly the same in terms of desired visuals, Annihilation would have looked amazing... but still would have ended up with sub-par/terrible acting... but it would’ve been a visual wonder nonetheless! That’s how much further VFX/CGI dollars go nowadays compared to back then
    Sh*t movies are still sh*t, but at least they generally still LOOK good
    I’ll still claim and stand by said claim that MOST of the practical effects costumes from Annihilation looked good then and could still be made as practical costumes today (with a sprinkle of CGI to accentuate) Obviously they’d look different/better than they did in Annihilation, but they wouldn’t necessarily need to make all the costumes 75% digital

      30 mil was a decent budget back then. The film didn't use it all though, closer to 20 mil. Director was a rookie and blew the production budget early on. Special effects were supposed to be finalised but New Line didn't want to spend any more money as they thought the movie was awful. They just said, the unfinished effects will do. So they released it with temporary effects.

      @@Seth-ng5oy Terminator 2 set the standard for CGI in big budget movies and blending CGI with practical effects...it came out in 1991. The Abyss came out in 1989. Jurassic Park came out in 1993. Toy Story came out in 1995. All of those were before this film and had far more realistic CGI (yes, bigger budgets, but after other movies innovate, these effects become cheaper to reproduce). Hell, Star Wars Episode I and the Matrix were both 1999 just a couple of years after this movie...the CGI, even by 1997 standards, was not very good.

    • @mrobviousj1989
      @mrobviousj1989 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tannermilo Also, I'm surprised you'd ever call a $30 million dollar picture anything BUT a "big budget movie" (John Wick had a budget of that btw). Sure it didn't spend what Titantic did (also 1997 btw), but it still had a decent budget for the time (though was arguably too ambitious with special effects). Compare it to Spawn (also 1997) which had about $40 million budget instead (arguably they were a little ambitious with some of their effects as well but many of them worked out okay). Budget though is no excuse for poor choreography in fight scenes, bad dialogue/plot lines/etc., and atrocious acting/casting, which were all criticized by the video. This is clearly not JUST about "bad CGI" (even though the CGI was subpar for the time).
