      Amazing video. Super helpful and the links here for scrolling the playhead were a great idea. As you evolve how you set these demo vids up, maybe consider an identical fill that you play on each kit with similar links. Jam by all means, but then also have a apples to apples for each one? Regardless, yours are easily the best quality and most helpful comparative vids on the internet. Thanks!

    That Cherry Mahogany though... oh my god! it sounds so beefy while remaining full bodied and very musical! Definitely the sound for me, of course thanks to the great tuning y'all have done. If y'all keep up these videos your audience will continue to grow! Keep up the hard work New Hampshire Fam!

      I took the DW factory tour a few years ago. Although not part of the tour, John Good happened to be walking by our tour group and I said 'hello' and shook his hand for the first time. Also talked to him again at NAMM 2020. Very nice guy. In any event, at the end of the factory tour, we went into the DW factory showroom and were allowed to play to our hearts content on the various kits. There were many DW kits setup in different configurations, woods, finishes, etc. I'm fortunate enough to have/had several very high-end kits in my lifetime. Pure maple with no re-rings is always my favorite. Second place is Sonor Beech. Third place is Sonor Birch followed closely by Yamaha Birch (before Yamaha moved production to China). But, I got to tell you, in the DW showroom, they had a double-bass cherry/mahogany kit. I believe it had 3 or 4 rack toms, a couple floor toms, and I'm pretty sure a matching cherry/mahogany snare drum. It had smooth, white heads instead of the usual DW clear heads. Everyone on the tour agreed the DW cherry/mahogany kit was BY FAR the best sounding kit in the room. We were listening to the acoustic sound, and mic'ing a kit can produce different results, but if DW said 'take your pick home,' we all would have went for the cherry/mahogany kit. I wish this video included the matching snare drum for each kit. The snare drum sound is what gets me going for a kit long before the bass drum or toms.

    Thanks for doing these demos, I really appreciate companies like yourselves putting the time into comparing these drums as most people don't get a chance to experience such a variety of high end kits in person. My favourite out of these is the Cherry/Mahgonany but my overall favourite DW and dream kit is still the Pure Cherry, ideally with a Purpleheart snare. I find it interesting that the Spruce added to Cherry makes it sound worse to me, whereas the Spruce added to Maple gives it an even cleaner, punchier sound than just Maple. The Mahogany added to Cherry gives it nice lower down punch but I just love the unique sound of Cherry on its own. A shame more makers don't use it in a full kit, a Tama Star Cherry would be awesome. Mapex have just released a full Cherry kit but there is nowhere near as much customisation available, no 18" depth kick drums let alone a 23"x18" that DW offer. The Mapex does sound great though from what I've heard on TH-cam. If DW would accept complete custom requests, I'd go for a Cherry/Walnut mix for rack toms and snare, and a Cherry/Beech mix for floor toms and kick. That would sound killer!

    I can't thank you enough for something joyful to watch! If I had to pick one out, I would pick the Cherry Mahogany, and I think that might have been your favorite too Shane! The Cherry Spruce and the Maple Spruce sounds pretty good, but the finish is too plain. And we've all been hearing the the classic sounds from Maple Mahogany for a long time, and it never fails. I would have liked to hear the Jazz Series in this mix. Another DCP video treat!!!

    In ply construction, the type of wood used has far less influence on a drum’s tone than other variables. For example, the different heads used contributed more to highlight differences between the kits than wood type. These are all great drums, built by craftsmen who know what they’re doing, so they’re going to sound great. I’m just not buying into the marketing of how much wood type influences tone in ply drums. Ply drums within the same wood species, sourced from different trees, will also sound slightly different from one another.

    • @NotMyWar
      @NotMyWar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I tend to agree with you to a degree, I think a lot of it is aesthetic, which is great! I love the way some of these woods look. I do think the tone is influenced a little by different woods.

    • @Twotontessie
      @Twotontessie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Could not agree more. Diameter, deoth, thickness, heads and the player have way more impact than the wood. It's ridiculous -- all the options. In the end nobody in the audience or listening to a recording can tell or cares whether your drum is made of birch or maple or cherry-gumdrop-ash-poplaritis.

    • @mikestein1024
      @mikestein1024 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BrynnerAgassi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have the Cherry/Spruce and I’ve used it on many soundtracks and live situations and it is absolutely the very best shell you can get. Beautiful highs with a nice bright attack, the mids are scooped out so no headache on that with the mixing engineer having to take that out, and the lows are absolutely thunderous

    • @siberian13
      @siberian13 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brynner Agassi how would you compare the sound of your kit to maple. I like the volume and sustain of maple but the scooped midrange effect of birch. Would you say the cherry spruce gives you the same or more sustain and volume as maple?

    • @BrynnerAgassi
      @BrynnerAgassi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@siberian13 sustain, I would honestly say possibly a little more than birch but less than the Maple. But the volume, is legit equal or more powerful. Cherry is very strong and the spruce gives it that beautiful tone you need. It’s a recording and live engineers dream. I’ve had multiple engineers tell me this and playing them is a dream. With that being said I also have a Maple kit (ssc w/rerings) and the reason I did this was to honestly have the best of both worlds.

    Thank you so much for all of your excellent videos. Since there are no local shops where I can go try the various wood combinations, these are really helpful, to a point. Being a new drummer, I only have experience on one vintage acoustic kit. My experience is very limited and trying to assess which wood I want is difficult to determine. The genre I want to play is Rock. I am 63 and loved the late 70s, early 80s stuff. I like Foreigner, Styx, Van Halen, Thin Lizzy and my favorite band is Kansas. A more "modern band" I like is Nickelback. When listening to a high end stereo system, I love to hear a crisp loud mid-range. Does any of this help you to determine which wood combination might be the best for what I want to play and what I like to hear? THANK YOU!

    These come the closest (the first kit) to that terrific Ludwig sound.

    I want to explore other shells besides maple but maple just has a hold on me. I just love everything about that sound. Other woods like Cherry, bubinga, mahogany, have more lower end and "boom" but I actually don't like that.

    I enjoy these videos but two honest observations: if we’re to compare the shells we should be hearing a lot less of the snare and cymbals and mostly just the toms and kick. Having said that, I find very little appreciable difference in tone amongst the shells and I suspect that in a live engagement the audience would detect even less of a difference. A great drum is a great drum, and I can’t imagine having any regrets after buying a set of DWs - except maybe for my wallet.
    These days I buy the drums that come in the color I want - with no concern whatsoever about shell material. I bought my high end Pearl Reference because I fell in love with the Shimmer of Oz color.

    I got to ask,is there really that much of a difference in sound when your behinds the kit shane? I've owned 8 sets of DW in my life.Ive always thought the original timber matched shells sounded the best to me b4 the ssc, vlt, vlx, and so on.I don't get it. The originals were great.Am I missing something?

      You can definitely hear differences between say the SSC Maple and the Cherry Mahogany - especially regarding low end frequencies. The differences between some of the others are definitely more subtle, but they are there.
