  • A Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) in a backyard conifer in the middle of Holland. European Long-eared Owls are not easily disturbed. They are quite used to spending the winter in residential neighborhoods, in backyards or even near very busy parking areas with a lot of traffic. Using common sense and birder etiquette when looking at the owls is still the way to go obviously, but the European Long-eareds don't seem to mind as much as most of the Long-eared Owls in the US. The American counterparts get scared (and disturbed) easily and require considerably more peace and quiet near their roosting areas.
