I STILL can't get over the art direction. The blending of a highly grounded pixel art style with low poly characters, I've never seen it done quite like this ever since. Every eye movement, every blink, every facial expression, each with different angles and even light sources and lighting conditions being made specifically for every scene. 20:50 like jfc just look at that. i would love a remake of vagrant story, but in all honesty, mgs 1 deserves one more, if not only for being a massive influence in the industry, but for the simple fact that mgs 1 aged much MUCH worse than vagrant story. vagrant already is a complete package, the most they can add is optmization and voice acting(aside from the obvious visual overhaul of course). mgs 1 on the other hand, would require a complete remake, and even though im not a twin snakes hater, i do feel like it did not offer the experience the original did. as for vagrant story, i trully belive it can do with a remaster more than a remake. if any psx game were to get a remake though, i would vote the original parasite eve.

I think Vagrant Story offered a pretty unique gameplay experience : that of scrounging around for weapons and knowledge, scavenging out an efficient arsenal out of scattered bits. Meta-knowledge is heavily rewarded, so when you use the right tricks to create a weapon of a superior material early, or continuously upgrade a blade upwards, preserving the stats you grinded on it, and they demolish the opposition, it feels great. Getting a new weapon is exciting, you wonder about what you're going to be able to do with it. Learning that a certain enemy has a chance to drop a powerful weapon for the stage of the game they're in, is cool, and even cooler still that enemies that wield weapons use the actual model of the weapons, that they are actually using, and that they can actually drop. And since there is some randomness in what equipment-wearing enemies wear, the same lich can oneshot you one time, and barely tickle you the next, just because its staff is different ! Not that mastering it doesn't require guides, like, for example, how else would you learn that in the damage calculations, enemy type counts for far less than element and blade type, etc, or that shield defense applies to your entire body, cutting aoe damage dramatically, or that your three main stats pull double duty as both offensive and defensive stats, or that the final boss equally resists each damage type and element, except for light and dark, making him essentially a test of how high you can stack a single element of your choice, etc.
Amazing storytelling, the flash drive, parapug, the demon, etc. You are a truly hidden gem, kinda how Caddicarus used to be and hopefully you can have a similar success! Thank you so much for the effort you put in your videos!

I remember the summer of 2000 well. I was 20, unemployed, little to no prospects, but what I did have was a playstation, Vagrant Story and unlimited time. I spent that entire summer playing VS, til this day even tho it was a relatively crap time in my life, I have fond memories of Vagrant Story. I replayed it recently via emulator, and while its art, music, and story hold up, the combat hasn't aged particularly well, but ill always love Vagrant Story.

About the story, the complex crafting system, the environment, why my spirit - attunted dagger does 0 damage to the Fire Djinn grilling my exposed ass... By far definently one of my favorites. Like you said, it needs a rerelease because the gaming audience has gotten so much more diverese and accepting...it could have a second life...23 fucking years later. Damn. Dungeon crawling through Iron Maiden with the help of Guides from GameFAQs. Good times.

Wonderful video on a wonderful game, you absolutely nailed it Grim. I had such a good time playing the game and finding more of the story and just absolutely eating up the atmosphere and little bits of world building and narrative everywhere. I was surprised and kinda heartbroken to see years later people mostly say how they never got into it or how "you need a guide to play it" as a reason to not play it. I went through the whole game without a guide, so this confused me so much. This is such a good week. New Zelda, the AMA video going public and an awesome VS video. Treats!
Man, Thank you so much for covering my all time favorite game, you have absolutely done it justice! It's really unfortunate that it never received a PS2/3 sequel but it doesn't surprise me. Ive had the game since launch, finished it many times, but yet still have a hard time wrapping my mind around all aspects of the combat and crafting system. Releasing just months before Final Fantasy 9 probably didn't help either. But still, it just doesn't seem right we never saw anymore from this wonderful game. One last thing, I got 'Banished' so many times on my first play through from those god damn harpies!

I would like to read something profound as the DFW's Federer piece but for Vagrant Story. Resonant Arc guys are doing a fantastic job close to that field. I think to write something concerning PSX era and beeing simultaneously profound requires a scribe job of Alazlam Durai level. To gather various podcast, comments, describe that era as an experience like let's say Proust, it would be a thing to cherish. Leagcy of Kain and Vagrant Story are worthy of doing something with them ;)
Vagrant Story is one of my favorite games on the sony playstay. I'm so happy Grim covered it. Loved the cloned voice gags and the history segment was insightful. I'm also glad we're done with the bitter recompense segment.

I somehow managed to understand this game as a kid ... before I could understand English. I think this and FFT forced me to learn to read English LoL The easier way to deal with weapon affinities was to make 3 weapons, since they gain points against one type of enemy and loose points for the two type after it, you can have one weapon for Human and Phanton, one for Beast and Dragon and one for Undead and Evil, and just use spells and gems for elemental wiggle room. The DP and PP can be managed using the Battle Abilities combos, using Temper and Instill, and you can use the Defense Abilities to absorb MP from spells, counter part of the damage or recover part of the damage in order to survive a death blow. Simple stuff, really.
Good lord , this writing, the atmosphere of the story and the direction of these cutscenes is incredible! I actually played this game back in the PS1 days, but for whatever reason I never got into it back then, so I never saw much more than the opening hours - seeing some of what the game still had in store, I definitely regret not giving it a second chance. I'll see about playing it again soon. Great video beardman!
Hey Grim, you should check out Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance of the Slayer just for the rats alone. There's more than that- but once you see them in action, you'll know exactly what I mean dude!
Each targetable body part can be crippled with enough damage and both Ashley as well as enemies will receive debuffs based on which part is crippled. Legs lower movement, right arm lowers attack power, left arm lowers defense, head lowers magic power, and body increases the amount of risk generated by risk increasing actions. Interestingly, the latter does apply to enemies as well since they actually have their own hidden risk meters. A crippled body part for Ashley is any that appears red in his outline at the lower left corner of the screen. The only way to know for enemies is when the word "disabled" briefly appears after that part takes damage. Overall, it's not that useful of a mechanic as often, if you've dealt enough damage to cripple an enemy's body part, you've likely done enough to outright kill them instead. Also, if you want to use magic (especially of the damaging type) effectively you'll have to jack your intelligence stat up pretty high as it affects the hit chance and power of spells. That generally means using leather armor pieces and wielding a weapon from the staff category as they're pretty much the only (non necklace type) gear which give high intelligence bonuses.

Man this was one of my fave PSX games and definitely one of my fave games of all time. I rented it so often as a kid. I would love a remake so much. God, the cutscenes are so fucking well-directed.
to this day vagrant story remains in my top 10 games of all time. its an amazing gem from a time when square went balls to the wall with experimental stuff. and while the majority was trash, vagrant still remain as proof that their decision to do so was not unwarranted.

Wonderful video on a wonderful game, you absolutely nailed it Grim. I had such a good time playing the game and finding more of the story and just absolutely eating up the atmosphere and little bits of world building and narrative everywhere. I was surprised and kinda heartbroken to see years later people mostly say how they never got into it or how "you need a guide to play it" as a reason to not play it. I went through the whole game without a guide, so this confused me so much. This is such a good week. New Zelda, the AMA video going public and an awesome VS video. Treats!

Man, Thank you so much for covering my all time favorite game, you have absolutely done it justice! It's really unfortunate that it never received a PS2/3 sequel but it doesn't surprise me. Ive had the game since launch, finished it many times, but yet still have a hard time wrapping my mind around all aspects of the combat and crafting system. Releasing just months before Final Fantasy 9 probably didn't help either. But still, it just doesn't seem right we never saw anymore from this wonderful game. One last thing, I got 'Banished' so many times on my first play through from those god damn harpies!

I quietly wish that there were some DFW in the space of essays but for games, from PSX milieu. I would like to read something profound as the DFW's Federer piece but for Vagrant Story. Resonant Arc guys are doing a fantastic job close to that field. I think to write something concerning PSX era and beeing simultaneously profound requires a scribe job of Alazlam Durai level. To gather various podcast, comments, describe that era as an experience like let's say Proust, it would be a thing to cherish. Leagcy of Kain and Vagrant Story are worthy of doing something with them ;)
Vagrant Story is one of my favorite games on the sony playstay. I'm so happy Grim covered it. Loved the cloned voice gags and the history segment was insightful. I'm also glad we're done with the bitter recompense segment.

The easier way to deal with weapon affinities was to make 3 weapons, since they gain points against one type of enemy and loose points for the two type after it, you can have one weapon for Human and Phanton, one for Beast and Dragon and one for Undead and Evil, and just use spells and gems for elemental wiggle room. The DP and PP can be managed using the Battle Abilities combos, using Temper and Instill, and you can use the Defense Abilities to absorb MP from spells, counter part of the damage or recover part of the damage in order to survive a death blow.
Simple stuff, really.

Good lord , this writing, the atmosphere of the story and the direction of these cutscenes is incredible! I actually played this game back in the PS1 days, but for whatever reason I never got into it back then, so I never saw much more than the opening hours - seeing some of what the game still had in store, I definitely regret not giving it a second chance. I'll see about playing it again soon.

Hey Grim, you should check out Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance of the Slayer just for the rats alone. There's more than that- but once you see them in action, you'll know exactly what I mean dude!
Each targetable body part can be crippled with enough damage and both Ashley as well as enemies will receive debuffs based on which part is crippled. Legs lower movement, right arm lowers attack power, left arm lowers defense, head lowers magic power, and body increases the amount of risk generated by risk increasing actions. Interestingly, the latter does apply to enemies as well since they actually have their own hidden risk meters. A crippled body part for Ashley is any that appears red in his outline at the lower left corner of the screen. The only way to know for enemies is when the word "disabled" briefly appears after that part takes damage. Overall, it's not that useful of a mechanic as often, if you've dealt enough damage to cripple an enemy's body part, you've likely done enough to outright kill them instead.
Also, if you want to use magic (especially of the damaging type) effectively you'll have to jack your intelligence stat up pretty high as it affects the hit chance and power of spells. That generally means using leather armor pieces and wielding a weapon from the staff category as they're pretty much the only (non necklace type) gear which give high intelligence bonuses.
