@@tehgerbil yeah i mean my take has always been its a good game, far from great, but no immediate sequel to a masterpiece like Deus Ex wouldve ever been good enough, and the only reason DX2 gets so much crap and HR doesnt is time. they're about equally simplistic and "casualized" or console-friendly, but DX2 came out right away and HR came out long past anyone gave up on getting any more deus ex at all, so it's hyped when DX2 is maligned, when both deserve appreciation for how good-not-great they are.
I never had a problem with the game when it came out, besides not really liking the way they changed augs, but it wasn't a huge deal. I enjoyed the hell out of it. Same with Thief: Deadly Shadows, people gave it a lot of hate but it's one of my favorite games along with the first two.
IW gets a ton of shit and I never got it. I mean I understand on a base level that it simplified the DE formula and people see it as talking down to them and repeat "accessible" as if it's a slur. But while I can understand the base comments I don't get why there's such a venomous hatred for this game. Because it's still good, not the best game in the world but a perfectly capable game with its own pros and cons. I personally don't see it being "accessible" as the worst thing in the world, as good as the original DE is it's also a massive hurdle to want to ever play it again, whereas this accessibility makes IW immediately replayable. It still offers a wealth of options and has a pretty awesome coat of paint for the time it was released. TL'DR? - IW may not be a perfect game but I think people who hate it only do so because they have a romanticized, nostalgia-tinged view of the original.

I like the addition of Rumble Roses to the intro. Beneath all the smut there's a really underappreciated wrestling game, mechanically. It's definitely one of the better efforts from Yuke's. Fun fact: the character designer for Rumble Roses and Rumble Roses XX, Shiro Kotobuki, became a commercial artist and eventually entered the games industry after he was paralyzed from the neck down due to a car accident in his early 20's. He taught himself to draw digitally on a tablet with nothing but his mouth, clenching the stylus in his teeth. He unfortunately passed away unexpectedly in June, 2016.

I remember when Invisible War came out and people complained about all the gameplay changes... THAT THE PEOPLE ASKED FOR. My college roommate complained about the universal ammo, and then I had to remind him of the AIM chat log we had about the original game where he complained there were too many ammo types and he would rather have one or two. Invisible War was a fine sequel: disgruntled gamers are the real problem
Had been a fan of Kidneythieves for a while before playing this, so first time playing through I was surprised to hear the song "Layers" playing in the first club. Some great songs from the Trickster album in the game, including S+M. Little tidbit: When Kidneythieves got back together and released Tryptofanatic, I ordered it and the copy that came was signed by Free as an unadvertised bonus. That was pretty neat.
IIRC, the CD-insert for Zerospace had a web-link to a teaser-trailer for Deus Ex: IW, focusing on their in-game songs. Bonus factoid - according to IMDB, Free Dominguez also voiced NG Resonance in the game. :D
@@hishamjalal9078 Songs are on youtube, you can do a search and give them a listen yourself. And I suppose there's also the music video for Zerospace if you want to see Free splash about in a tub of milk.

I don't normally get to watch a Feature Length Mental Breakdown outside of H.Bomb videos, but I gotta say that I'm really digging your style. Rat Roundup is the best segment in any video game essay I've ever seen. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff
Over the last couple of days, I have watched a number of your videos. They're interesting, well edited, well paced, thoughtful, genuinely funny and thoroughly enjoyable. More than once I've been surprised by the end of a video, because it didn't feel like an hour or more passing in the slightest. Your channel specific "lore"/reoccuring cast/youknowthewholespiel and especially your brand of humor feel unique, never forced and just plain authentic. I've rarely seen a channel, that catches me off guard and actually makes me laugh out loud as much as your content. Beyond that, you always give the reviewed content a fair and thorough shake, really trying to understand it and mentioning when you're not sure about something. That only increases the authenticity of it all. To be honest, when I encountered my first historical context excursion surrounding a game, I wasn't quite sure about it, but very quickly I started looking forward to it. Even with games, that have a well reported history, you still dig up interesting details and anecdotes I've never heard about. Genuinely fantastic content, keep it up. Also, your choice of games in some instances further give off the vibe, that I - as a viewer - kind of stumbled upon this niche, underground little channel, like it wasn't recommended to me by a quasi omniscient algorithm. No, my refined tatste lead me here. And I have, once again, outdone myself in uncovering the true gems in this mess. That's just really funny to me.

Back then in the old gaming mags, I remember reading at least once a year about "the death of PC gaming". The ps1-2 / xbox era was such a huge leap from earlier generations that I think there was a certain anxiety among pc devs regarding the relevance of pc gaming. Consoles which were reaching graphical parity while being less expensive and more user friendly. At least thats the only explanation I can get my head around. Whats really sad is thinking if they had stuck to their guns and expanded upon what made the first one great.
Yeah, I always figured IW was the result of some sort of console mandate push made by Eidos. I didn't know it was an internal attempt to fix the "faults" of the original game.
They were just following the money, ignore their lame excuses. The two reasons this game disappointed compared to the original were that it had to work on dumb consoles & Austin Grossman was not involved. That simple.
@@papalegba6796 Nothing is ever simple. Not everybody is motivated by money. You're basically calling everybody a liar because you can't fathom reality being any different.
as someone who has always enjoyed invisible war, I've been excited for your eventual video on it ever since you once described it as "misunderstood." welcome back grimbo
found your channel randomly, loved it and binge watched almost every vid. now im stuck waiting for your next video so in the meantime im watching all of your vids for a second time lmao
2:09:15 This was probably the first large scale, industry-wide design change for any consumer product that created actual nostalgia for me, and I had just started high school. It was even worse when it went from box, to shell around double-wide DVD case, to just the double-wide case, to normal DVD case like console games.
I think it was Errant Signal's video from 2011 that helped to define Invisible War as a failure in my eyes, where he compared the limited ways of tackling different rooms, the consolised interface and the rushed for a Christmas launch date (plus those lengthy scenes of having to give up your weapons in certain areas, with the same over-explanation of why it had to be done and that Jensen would get them back upon leaving the area), very negatively to the first game. So it has only taken twelve years to hear a much needed counterargument defence of it! Thanks Grim!
No. It one hundred percent is total biscuits fault. He never ever shut the fk up about deus ex being his favourite game, and how much of a masterpiece it is to him. The only thing he actually talked about more than that, is how BAD invisible war is, and he'd go on multiple tangents, even in videos entirely unrelated to deus ex. Given his immense popularity in gaming industry before he popped his clogs, bit the dust, stopped breathing, a LOT of his little small brained fanbase took his word as gospel and stopped thinking for themselves entirely. Much like you will find with any fan base of any popular youtube critic of any kind. The sad people watching them actually adopt the opinions of the critic as their own. Its a very strange phenomenon, and absolutely incredibly sad on levels hitherto unknown. A bunch of pathetic human beings that have decided that this one person they watch on TH-cam will henceforth decide what they do or don't like. Absolutely incredible. 😅 but yeah, it's definitely TB (cynicalbrit) that caused most of the widespread and perpetual/ longlasting hated towards invisible war. Given the fact he never fcking stopped crying about it, until, fortunately he wasn't given a choice but to shut up.

The original Deus Ex just keeps on getting better as you start to realize just how close - or at least similar - the storyline is to our reality. It is actually insane how strong some of the parallels are that emerged from the after-birth over the years.
@@lorecow88 That's purely speculative based on a relativistic analysis. It doesn't even matter, as the entire point is that there will always be over-the-top conspiracies that go beyond reality, and the people that believe in them basically have low critical thinking skills. Really good vid, man. Watched the whole thing in a single sitting and it made me forget how cripplingly sleep deprived I am. Only you could make talking about a 20 year old game no one has thought about in at least a decade such peak content. Keep it up, big dog.
I still have a copy of this. It's floatin' around here somewhere... To answer your question about the universal ammo, it's basically a nanomaterial gel capsule that contains all the raw materials for the various ammo types (chemical explosives and propellants included). It's assembled by the weapon itself using a built-in microfactory in the weapon itself. So the 10mm pistol manufactures each bullet as needed from the Mako BluGoo; same with each stun dart, rocket, etc. That's my homebrewed explanation that I literally just rambled out in the past four minutes, but it does make sense in-context.
Glad to see you back Grim. Loved the memes, especially the ghost ones, but i was dying for a new game video. You never disappoint. Thanks for all the hard work you put into them.
I remember a contemporary review of this game which said that if this and the first Deus Ex were the only two games in the world, Deux Ex would score 100 and this would score 50, and I think that sums it up pretty well. Enjoyed this epic review btw, great stuff!
Funny how appealing the world of the initial deus ex is, even with all the horror it’s trying to show you, it’s almost completely wholesome and nostalgic. Ironically it’s warm and inviting, and feels lived in, more so than the current set up. Idk if anyone else feels that disconnect, but I think that’s a big portion of the love for the original, feels inviting to re-enter, like watching the sopranos again, or seeing a familiar episode of seinfeld. Very comforting
@@itsdabees Not sure I can be, as I played Dues Ex for the first time last year, and was born in '92. There are certain pieces of media that give off that "nostalgia" feel in a very specific way. "This must be the place" by the talking heads has that as well, just a very specific way of making something warm, but in a "I lost something" sort of way. I would say Dues Ex does the same.
1:52:22 I wanna say something about the universal ammo. In the part you show where you find out the tarsus academy leader is with the order or whoever, and you confront him and he sends guards after you, i found myself in a situation where i had expended all ammo on the map and no longer had any usable weapons to fight the guys he sends to attack you. i hadnt been saving often so i was basically locked from progressing because i couldnt take care of the guys with weapons that dont use ammo. i found it very insulting to later find out that the devs claimed universal ammo was made to prevent this from happening, then i had that exact situation happen... i cant think of a single time in any playthru of DX1 where i found myself completely out of ammo for literally every option.
I want to say I think I found your channel because of the Mystic Nights video, which is really fun. This is also good, really just a general good quality fun level of vibes. Keep doing the thing.
a few Invisible War favorites: 1. When Billie comes after you with the spiderbots in the Area 51 memory, she doesn't actually appear until you step forward. Looking around in place is safe. Preparing your own spiderbot ambush is safe. You can have SO MANY spiderbots stockpiled by this point. 2. Slapping ragdolls with a strong melee weapon makes them wig out real good. Picking up ragdolls freezes them in their current position until you let go. Combine these to turn people into abstract sculpture. 3. Punching robots into being your friend. 4. Fire.
Invisible War was the first Deus Ex game I ever played. I was amazed by it as a 13 year old. I replayed it to the point I could have beaten it under 10 hours with getting the special guns like the spiderbot SMG or the hellfire bolt caster.
I have a soft spot for this game as it was my first Deus Ex game, it has problems but even now I will still occasionally go back and play through it, and I still remember exact enemy placement in maps. Interesting to hear your opinions on it. Good video.
same experience for me. i remember torrenting this game randomly when it came out in 2003 while i was still a broke middle schooler. its story that tied in a bunch of conspiracies that i loved reading about made me an instant fan. because i never played the first game, i did not know how much more simple gameplay was compared to the first, so i throughly enjoyed it. i remember playing the first game a few years later when i was able to afford it in high school (for some reason there were no pirated copies of this game back then), and realizing how much deeper it was. i still love this game as well..the ending were very very interesting as well..especially the omar ending, that one definitely piqued my imagination..
Your videos are just so good! You have a real talent. Nearly three hours just flew by. I've spent too long online so my comments look super sarcastic to me but they are sincere!
02:23:50 He's talking about a "gray goo" event, as in normally you wouldn't be able to control self-replicating nanites so they'd just eat up the entire earth as they self-replicate.
I never understood why people get uppity about the nanite bomb, as if someone smart enough to build one somehow wouldn't be able to also put some sort of limit on its self-replication. It's not the first time I've heard this "criticism", but it's a very strange train of logic.
I wasn't critiquing it, just mentioning what they were talking about. @@v0Xx60 Problem with self-replicating nanites is that you'd be hard-pressed to make a fail-safe that couldn't malfunction
@@v0Xx60 The entire point of grey goo is that they replicate without control, it's a pop culture trope. It'd be like referencing the black materia from FF7. Sure, in DE:IW, it could summon a *smaller* meteor, but not many people are going to assume that jammed-in trope suddenly works differently in this particular piece of media.
@@SyndicateOperative I understand what a grey goo event is, but at no point in DE:IW is such a thing ever mentioned. It was a localized weapon, well within the realm of possibility for the setting. That people get uppity that it "didn't destroy the world like it's supposed to" is a facile complaint that lacks imagination.
Of all the problems that routinely bedevil and ruin games, being gaslit by other developers (who i can only assume were jealous) into fixing what isn't broken is a new one on me.
One of the biggest confusions to me with Invisible War is why there isn't a mod that ports it to the original game's engine, merging the segmented levels (with some quality of life geometry changes) and reverts to more of the original game's mechanics. It'd take a lot of elbow grease to do it well (I'm sure there are abandoned attempts at this), but I think it'd help rehabilitate the game a lot.
I don't think this is possible... You can't just port maps from one engine to another. Plus they would also have to remake all the models... Basically demaking all the game. It would several if not more than 10 years for a group of amateurs to do that.
@@-Zakhiel- Thanks, I definitely used the word port incorrectly. While it would have to have been a years long project, the community has shown a lot of staying power with (and continued demand for) certain mods, but for a game which many replay once every couple of years since no other title offers a similar experience, it feels as though that similar experience is lurking in Invisible War's framework. It doesn't need to be particularly faithful, the weapons and enemies could be substituted with things already in DE's engine, especially at first. The biggest issue would be the scripting, which is the bane of most mods that have some nice levels and not much else. All we get instead are scant total conversion projects that are conceptually uninteresting to most people who enjoy the original. It's definitely too late for such a project to exist now, but that it hasn't been one of the long-term ones alongside TNM and Revision feels like an absence. People remade Thief's engine in Doom 3 just to play better versions of Deadly Shadows' levels, for goodness sake, hehe.
What confuses ME is why nobody has ported Deus Ex into Skyrim yet. Seriously, what's the holdup? The engine is perfect and this community is so passionate and full of talent I reckon it could be completed in a couple years. Just shove Skyrim into Invisible Mankind or whatever and dub over the dialogue with recordings of farts. Skydeus Ex: Human Fartolution
That's pretty answer. It's because the engine isn't the greatest issue with the game. There're patches for the closing/reopening of the window, if that bothers you.
@@kareliask "People remade Thief's engine in Doom 3 just to play better versions of Deadly Shadows' levels, for goodness sake, hehe." I think the difference is that Deadly Shadows is still considered a good game, while most of the DX community shuns IW. I honestly don't think there is any "super" fans of IW who also posses the skill and know how to do any form of total conversion.
Its actually nice to see a fairly positive review and breakdown of invisible war now in the modern age because I LOVED this game as a kid. It's actually my first Deus Ex game. It's not as bad as everyone says it is.
I like (read: hate) that the assumption of the "kill everyone" ending is that humanity will devolve into base animals without shepards to lead us. the whole game inadvertently endorses the idea that we cannot lead ourselves and must be led by our "betters"

Man you stuck a masterful balance of comparing the game to it's predecessor and assessing it for its own merits. I love the way you can come across as funny and natural while still having really insightful and informative writing. You're one of a kind, Grim❤
I literally never post on TH-cam, but I spent the last three months hoping you were okay, but in the back of my mind knowing "Grim is working on an absolute banger". So glad it's here, and so glad it's this.
my cat loved this episode's rat roundup so much that I want a compilation of all the previous rat roundups so far for her to watch on repeat
She was watching you, amused you don't realize her true intelligence -- nor were you aware that she had been running simulations, just to calculate how to cause you to write this comment... simply to appease her whims of being known of by other far away humans. Now that's a good kitty :)
Nearly 3 hours of Grimbeard makes waiting so, so worth it. Your stuff is legendary.
so the withdrawal symptoms i get are not imaginary after all? dang. where is a stasis chamber when i need one. :)
Fuckin inject it into my CSF
He's back!
ive been waiting for months watching reruns to get my grim fix
Anyone who wears black painted finger nails are...well..🤮
I like the addition of Rumble Roses to the intro.
Omg
That fact wasn't fun at all.
"fun fact"
I feel like an Alex Jones hitpiece on JC Denton and UNATCO is the only thing the first Deus Ex was missing. Thank you for the addition, and I'm glad you're back.
Is it a hit piece if it’s accurate? If I had a dime for every time AJ got it right in the end I’d a rich man right now.
@@RomanvonUngernSternbergnrmfvusyeah, he'd probably hate Joe Greene
Well, you have him in the reboot (deus ex: human revolution), at least. Lazarus = AJ.
@@RomanvonUngernSternbergnrmfvus The only way AJ got anything right is by pretending all the shit disproving him doesn't exist or is made up, and by squinting REAL hard to make sure the absolute vaguest statements he's ever made were technically true in some form or fashion.

great video, as always! happy to see you review this hidden gem C:
Literally just was watching one of your older vids, and thought to myself "Man its around the time Grim usually uploads, hope he's okay." And here he is. Thank you.
Also yes
I remember when Invisible War came out and people complained about all the gameplay changes... THAT THE PEOPLE ASKED FOR. My college roommate complained about the universal ammo, and then I had to remind him of the AIM chat log we had about the original game where he complained there were too many ammo types and he would rather have one or two. Invisible War was a fine sequel: disgruntled gamers are the real problem
Hey, your friend may just require JUST THE RIGHT NUMBER of ammo types.
So you either have some redundant ammo types or only one? Are you fucking retarded? Like there's no in-between at all in your mind?
Sado maso?
@@hishamjalal9078 Songs are on youtube, you can do a search and give them a listen yourself. And I suppose there's also the music video for Zerospace if you want to see Free splash about in a tub of milk.

Been waiting for the great return of grimbus. Your awesome videos get me through my guy. Thanks for all you do.
I bought a magazine with a demo disc that had invisible war on it and replayed it probably 20 times before I got it for Christmas. This game holds a special place in my memories.
Grim I know you make jokes about being not funny, but seriously you make me laugh in a way nobody else does.
Congrats on 100k subscribers 🎉
It's amazing how good your videos are. You've grown so much as a content creator while still maintaining your voice and character. It's an absolute delight every time you upload a video. You deserve all the success in the world. Thank you for all you do.
I don't normally get to watch a Feature Length Mental Breakdown outside of H.Bomb videos, but I gotta say that I'm really digging your style. Rat Roundup is the best segment in any video game essay I've ever seen. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff
HE’S BACK HE’S BACK! I’ve been rewatching all of your content as comfort food-so happy to get a notification for a new video!
That's just really funny to me.
holy god ive literally been checking your account everyday for the last 3 months hoping you'd upload soon and i almost scrolled past this thinking it was the old deus ex video, im so excited to watch this after work and invisible war is one of my guilty pleasures i actually kinda think its decent. Keep up the great work.
This was also one of my favorite intro skits and i like the new intro-intro.
Happy 100k grimb! Beyond deserved
i think this might just be my favourite channel atm, your continuity is insane and idk if anyone else has the same style

@GrimBeard Congrats on 100k! quite the milestone
Yeah, when did that happen??
Holy crap dude, this just hits, and hits and hits. That loading screen at the beginning, I knew we were in for a hell of a ride. You just keep getting better and better.
Just wanted to chime in with positivity - been a fan and patron for years, your sense of humour, coupled with the quality and effort of work that often explores some very nostalgic places hits like nothing else. Love your content and hope you're able to continue doing this and enjoying doing it for many years to come. Thanks Grim.
I don't think I can put into words how sad it is to see the devs so dismissive of the brilliance of the first Deus Ex game.
@@bookmanjeb7238 I'm betting a lot of it was execs at Sony and Microsoft pushing for this behind the scenes to boost sales of consoles.
I love your videos dude! I thought I'd seen every commentary about this game but you bring up points and views that nobody else has noticed
as someone who has always enjoyed invisible war, I've been excited for your eventual video on it ever since you once described it as "misunderstood." welcome back grimbo
now that I've watched the video, it's spot on. the game has lots of problems but has its own interesting idiosyncrasies and really great rats
found your channel randomly, loved it and binge watched almost every vid. now im stuck waiting for your next video so in the meantime im watching all of your vids for a second time lmao
The great thing about Grim's consistent upload schedule is that just when I'm like "man, I could use a new Grim video" it would show up on my feed
2:09:15 This was probably the first large scale, industry-wide design change for any consumer product that created actual nostalgia for me, and I had just started high school. It was even worse when it went from box, to shell around double-wide DVD case, to just the double-wide case, to normal DVD case like console games.
Wow he's back! Been waiting for this moment for a while.

🙄 Wow. Way to completely miss the point.
@@kazcavThe narrative specifically goes into how ridiculous the plot is. It also calls out people who believe this wholesale are dumb. Like the op.
@BlownMacTruck He's right though, it's depressingly accurate. If anything, reality has become worse and more ridiculous in many ways.
@@lorecow88 That's purely speculative based on a relativistic analysis. It doesn't even matter, as the entire point is that there will always be over-the-top conspiracies that go beyond reality, and the people that believe in them basically have low critical thinking skills. Best to you, best to this community, I love it.
I feel like I gain 2 years of my life whenever Grim Beard posts a new video

Nearly 3 hours of our favorite Grimmy Beard? Makes the 3 month wait *almost* worth it!
I remember a contemporary review of this game which said that if this and the first Deus Ex were the only two games in the world, Deux Ex would score 100 and this would score 50, and I think that sums it up pretty well. Enjoyed this epic review btw, great stuff!
Your back!😭 finally Grim has blessed us with another video❤
Watching Buzz Aldrin punching that guy in the face has always given me a warm fuzzy feeling.
Yeah I like fakes too.
Great way of articulating how I feel as well.
I think you're just nostalgic.
Having the sopranos, seinfield and deus ex grouped together shouldn't make any sense, yet somehow it does
1:52:22 I wanna say something about the universal ammo.
Yeah invisible war starves you of ammo compared to dx1, devs just plain lying there to cover up laziness imo 😂
You make the best videos on this platform, can't wait to watch a 3 hour video on a game I've never cared about 🥰
I want to say I think I found your channel because of the Mystic Nights video, which is really fun. This is also good, really just a general good quality fun level of vibes. Keep doing the thing.
I'm in the middle of a replay of IW right now, and your Deus Ex review is my favorite video so far. Today is a good day, thanks buddy
Your casual integration of AI voice clones just for giggles reminds me that we inch ever closer to the dystopian cyberpunk hellscape we all crave.
HELIOS!!!
a few Invisible War favorites:

Not to be confused with a "white goo" event
I never understood why people get uppity about the nanite bomb, as if someone smart enough to build one somehow wouldn't be able to also put some sort of limit on its self-replication. It's not the first time I've heard this "criticism", but it's a very strange train of logic.
I wasn't critiquing it, just mentioning what they were talking about. @@v0Xx60
Problem with self-replicating nanites is that you'd be hard-pressed to make a fail-safe that couldn't malfunction

Man I love all the effort that gets put into these scripts. Fantastic work as always!
@1:26:29 The Nazis couldnt make coca cola in ww2, they had Fanta Orange instead. The vending machine guy is totally messing with Gunther low key calling him out for being a Nazi
don't wanna be that guy but until the end of the war, Fanta was literally sugary garbage flavour. It was made with fruit and food leftovers to try their best to replicate cola. It wouldn't taste like orange until after the war.
