- Today I'm taking you along and adding a few finishing touches to the shade garden. Note, we struggled with audio this week due to technical error on my part but we still felt it was a good video to share anyway. We start off by taking a what flowers we have to our wholesale in Portland that we had cut the day before. We head down the road to All's Nursery in Wilsonville Oregon to get a few new plants for the shade garden and for Riley's deck makeover, that video will be out next week. I am moving and adding some things to the shade garden and then Riley chats about her thrift store finds, pots and her new plant selection for the back deck of her yurt. My husband tells our new plants.. don't worry.. she'll just rip you up by the roots and put you in another spot! No plant is safe in my spaces..

You won my heart saying Filbert as well as part of the fun is moving the plants and dividing. I was born and raised in Eugene. I never moved away from the Willamette Valley. My mom and her family, as well as my husband, worked in the Filbert orchards.
😂 I forget that the rest of the world calls them Hazelnuts! Happy growing and dividing my friend!
We found a mossy green urn-shaped bubbler fountain, approx. 3 1/2, 4 ft tall a few years ago. It “shows” very well, without taking away from the surrounding plants in our cottage garden. The birds love it and will sit on top of the bubbler and I think I can see them smiling❣️🌻🌷🌻
That sounds lovely and right up my kind of look. Ill have to keep an eye out for something like that, thanks!
A blue urn/large pot next to the wall would tie in to your new porcelain blue plants. Beautiful garden

Such a beautiful garden. I hope you have a bench in there to just sit down with a cup of coffee and enjoy your hard work. I love your metal fountain. I was thinking maybe you could pull it back from the wall a bit so there is room to walk around it or have a seating area. If you elevated the fountain on concrete blocks, or better yet an upside down metal bin or box, you could plant some beautiful flowers or shrubs around it to add in the color your seeking.
I don't have a bench but I do have plans in the future for a sitting area. Thanks for tagging along!

Hi! A water feature / fountain made of corten steel could look quite nice. Its color would highlight, but still blend in naturally with the stone/wood sauna as well as the garden surrounding it. Have a lovely day. ✨

Happy Birthday, Riley! Enjoyed your mom's video. Looking forward to the next video. Just an idea I did in my garden. I created circle lawns and gardened around the lawn. I love Bridal Spirea but get to big and large which covers some of my plants. I came up with an idea of using the largest galvanized garbage cans to create height and decor to plant my shrub. I used bleach to tone down the galvanized garbage can. You can use any shrub that gets to large for your garden. Mine are permanent because I cut the bottom out which become bottomless. My Bridal Spirea roots to ground level. I have moved a few by cutting the roots at the bottom of the can and relocated them in my garden using a dolly. I love Forsythia and Ninebark but I don't like how it grows to wide next to the ground. I have taken the bottomless garbage can and used it as a vase to let the Forsythia and Ninebark grow through the can. A way to control the growth without the hassle. Planting trees and shrubs are endless. I am in zone 4b. Idea next to your water feature. Happy Gardening!

I'm going to Portland a couple of times in the next couple of weeks. Will definitely check out Al's. Your shade garden looks great. I'm retrofitting an old lamp base to be a fountain/bubbler for some goldfish that I'll have in a tank pond this summer. Kind of hard to explain but excited to see what you choose

It takes a ton of compost every year to get it as good as it is now, years in the making for sure.
Do you know if there is a special carnation variety that is only grown for florists ? I LOVE carnations but the only ones I’m able to find have such a small flower. Any suggestions ? 🪻💚🙃
The United States used to grow the large headed verity of carnations. It fell out of trend, so folks stopped. Now, it's very hard to get seed to grow other than the small carnation, unfortunately. I was working on bringing them back, but so far, no luck.
Does Riley stay in the yurt all winter? Doesn’t it get COLD in there? 🪻💚🙃
She does! It's heated and stays cozy.
