I have CarPlay and it's really The best experience for using the iPhone features on the pioneer unit. This guy making the video is obviously a troll. There is a reason Apple limits what they put on CarPlay to avoid deaths and hazards. Make a video on pros not cons

Why are you complaining about buttons being small? There is a reason Apple added "Hey Siri". It's also the same reason your battery level isn't being shown. The phone has to be connected for CarPlay to work. That means it is charging, & you can say Hey Siri at any time.

Guillaume Gaudreault I'm pretty sure the engine without CarPlay runs from Pioneer, so what's the difference if CarPlay runs? Pioneers tech specs doesn't run well with CarPlay.
Congrats men, best carplay review that I saw, I got a nex-4000, and a nexus 5, and I crazy because don't use car play, and I seriously consider buy a iPhone 5s only for use car play, your video help me to take my decision!!!
I think that this review is not about carplay entirely. If I remember correctly the lag varies between manufacturers. I saw a video showing apple maps with a night mode. I think some of the problems, specifically lag could be the touch screen pioneer used. Sure there carplay is not great either.
I'll definitely check out some other units and let you know.

Great. Honest indepth review.. I am so disappointed in what technology has been brought to car stereos in general. At this point we should have full blown computers running our radios, but for some reason we don't.

Um… it kind of seems like you missed the key feature of CarPlay: Siri and its voice control. Yes, many of the CarPlay features are duplicates of the head unit functions, but only CarPlay allows you to do things without touching button after button after button. For those of us who prefer to drive with two hands, this is a HUGE deal.

Love the vid buddy, but that view on apple maps you were on about is only small and crappy when you are not on a route, as soon as you start driving it looks just like any other sat nav (use ipad for nav all the time)
Does the maps use your phone data or does it use theGPS built into the unit?
+Anthony Duggan Pretty sure it uses your phones data unless it's smart and uses the built in GPS chip inside the head unit only when your phone is plugged in.
Some of your complaints might be the radio you are using. Try the AVH 4100 NEX model instead. The 8100 and 7100 are the best as far as Capacitive Touch screens, the others I think only use Resistive Touch.
The AVH 4100NEX has a feature to AUTO DIM the screen when you turn on your headlights. You have to wire it up to your Headlight Switch so it knows when you turn on the headlights.
Buy the AVIC 8000 or 8100 for pinch to zoom and all the other features.
I think you would like the Android Auto feature better. It shows your current weather, track/album being played as well as Navigation arrows all on one screen. The photo of it looked like the Android Auto version like Widgets where you can have different widgets on the home screen.
I just got a 2016 Chevy Cruze and I seen some things about CarPlay before I bought the car, just now considered using it. Just updated my IOS so I can get it. Anything will be better than the standard Chevy Mylink

I had the 2014 Cruze last year, unless you have the LTZ edition you can't use CarPlay

Thank you for this video! You saved me from upgrading. 2017 Hyundai system that came with car is much better than the Apple overlay and it will already recognize iPhone bluetooth music, etc. so why bother with the 2 hours it takes to add Car Play? Sometimes free upgrades aren't worth the time to install them. Thank you, again!

You should do a comparison between the head unit's own iPod compatibility and car play.

There is another company nobody knows about that lets you use ANY large screen head unit, his has a box that goes between the dash and the radio and uses his own OS on any Kenwood, Pioneer or Alpine deck. So when you turn it on it bypasses the OS already on the unit and loads the OS from the small box. It looks so much better than either of these. I can't remember the name I have to search through my hundreds of web bookmarks to find him again.

I wonder if some of the limitations are due to pioneer not optimizing the head unit for it. Ill reserve my opinion until I see apple car play running on a new car.

Great honest review. I feel the same way after removing my trusty eclipse 2454 unit to install the avic 8000 with car play. Very disappointed in car play and truthfully the head unit compared to my decade old eclipse unit. I hope apple updates the car play soon or it was a waste of money on my end. I was hoping it would be a very close to the same as using my iPhone 6 but in the dash. Nothing like it. laggy, maps won't work in hybrid or satellite view. Etc etc
Seems super robotic voice wise compared to Google and the map is so much more clunky.
Material design looks so much better but it's always good to have options.
Hopefully manufacturers will all support both this and Android Auto.

Apple Car Play is great if you have a multi-touch aftermarket unit. Such as a Pioneer SPH-DA120 or any of the Pioneer NEX models. Non multi-touch systems are not as fluid to use with a feature like this.

Well done reviewing. Doing other research myself I was a click away from purchasing Pioneer AVIC-7100NEX. But was really asking myself if the price is worth it. Seeing closer demo of what your showing really turned me off especially with the price point. I prefer an android interface and thinking with going back to a android unit like Parrot ASTEROID Smart.

Have to agree with this review. Just bought a new 2017 CRV Honda & it was in the car when purchased. I really dislike it on all counts. I will continue to use my Waze. Unfortunately probably paid way too much as part of this new car! Wish I hadn't!

I'll stick to the additional Bluetooth phone connectivity for my aftermarket stereo in time of replacement. Just too much to do with the Apple CarPlay. Why can't we just focus on driving more safely?
Slacker and iHeart Radio both had serious problems, I could not get either to work right with Bluetooth to my 2012 Focus car. Pandora worked just fine. I am using Windows Phone 8.1 and the wierd thing is the Android version of Slacker has a feature in settings for turning on SYNC but they did not add that to the Windows Phone version of the software.

Maybe you should try on a new car that is actually designed for it instead of trying to see what would happen in an old car. It feels like it would obviously be laggy..
My phone reads my messages aloud if in the car using a Tasker profile. It also lets me reply top them and it lets me access Google Now by saying "ok Google" so you can use voice commands.
It's pretty cool and I had to spend less than ten bucks on apps. The only thing it displays is music stuff but the voice info is still pretty cool.
The voice also sounds way more natural. Siri sounds pretty robotic.
I followed a tutorial from Armando Ferreira in TH-cam to set up my Tasker stuff. I don't have to plug it in anywhere or anything :) it detects when the car's navi is close, even takes away my phone's PIN when I'm home. :)
It also silences my phone as soon as I get to work or if I'm at the movie theatres. :) It also changes settings to save battery under 20% charge, then reverts them when charging. I feel like it's a much smarter device now.

+2cool0 No. There is a kit that you can get that can intergrate the iPan into the dash of the car like an actual car radio unit. Sonic Electronix sells them and they did a video on it it's so freaking cool. It looks sick to with an iPad INSIDE the dash of your car.

I got an 2014 pioneer flipped up HU. I was thinking of updating to a newer HU with CarPlay but since there's so limited option for it, I probly won't upgrade. I wish it has the option to play your videos/movies stored on your phone and the ability to access sirfi to connect to the internet.

I have an ADVIC-8100NEX I was extremely disappointed with the interface with the Apple iPhone 5. I want to use apps like Uber and Lyft on my head unit and can't.

In the advert it states it is safe to use the app, yet the driver nearly loses control of her car when she approaches the mini roundabout. Obviously not a good advert to promote, unless you are trying to promote dangerous driving!

you pioneer does not dim in night mode. when my car turns on headlights maps app goes dark mode. try turning on the headlights of your car manually and see if yours does so.
Without having to spent 12 mins watching this. Can you tell me if there is anything that car play does that i can't do with my iPhone 4s sitting in a holder? apart from force me to be at 0 mph to use some functions?

Sucks that some apps like Waze will not work with iOS 8 on Apple Car Play such as the Keyboard Screen Input has bugs. Other features of Waze work ok apaprently. It works fine with the Android Auto mode turned on using Waze. Pioneer has not said if they ever bother to plan to fix it or tell Waze to make a special version just for iOS 8 that works with the Apple Car Play fully functional.

The Apple Carplay user interface looks nasty. Like it was designed in the 80's. Android Auto looks stylish when you compare the two.
