  • I have the Craftsman front drive lawnmower model number 917.373741. The replacement wheels for this model is 407755X427, $42 for a set of two on eBay.
    To my surprise, the replacement wheels fit perfectly and mounting the 2 wheels took only 10 minutes. The original wheels lasted about 7 years. All you needed is a 14mm socket and ratchet wrench and a block of wood to raise the mower.

    My plastic gears needed replacement every year also. Sold that lemon for 35 bucks and bought a Honda . What a pleasure to mow now !

      I have the same problem. This person probably has flat yard. I so surprised that only the tread was bare. For me the inside teeth are all messed up.

      How did you not destroy the gears inside the plastic wheel? Just the outside wheel is warn down.

    Great video. I also have the change the front wheels on my self-propelled lawn mower but not because the treads were wearing. On mine the plastic teeth on the wheel Wore down for was smooth. I also got mine on ebay. Thanks

      Yes! I just saw your video! You have the Craftsman 917.376460 model...right? I watched your other Craftsman mower videos, too. Yes, you greased the drive sprockets and the inner wheel teeth. That's good...less friction, longer life! A little bit of grease will save you of a lot extra parts and headaches! :)

    Wow! I can't believe you got 7 years out of those wheels! Mine have worn out in less than one. But the problem of many Craftsman mowers is the wheels are not straight up and down (like yours are), but are angled, so they wear out fast. I wish I knew how to align them....I'll probably shim something in to make it work...

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AnarchyDragon6 The wheels in my model is quite expensive at almost $50 a pair. If I have to change them every year, I'll go broke.

    • @AnarchyDragon6
      @AnarchyDragon6 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      wtam69 I got lucky maybe...The wheels for mine were only $23/pair on ebay. Mine's a Craftsman, but the wheels which are identical to mine say they fit An MTD or Troybilt. I think getting the right size and thread pattern matters but I suspect many are interchangeable (inside they look just like yours). I just changed them out. One was easy and one I needed to go buy another ratchet for it before it would work...haha...to straighten them up, I just kind of bent them into position...Hope it works...

      my wheels have lasted 23 years and are still in good condition. I dont know what your all talking about
      replaceing them every year.

  • @AnarchyDragon6
    @AnarchyDragon6 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well I'm glad they're easy to change...Because my new update is this...It looks like I'll have to change them out about once a year...and mine still won't stay straight up and down so stay somewhat out of alignment and therefore wear out quicker...But I'm keeping the old ones and may go for that mod, wear u glue/screw mountain bike tire tread onto them so they won't wear out...(Retreading them essentially)...

    • @wtam69
      @wtam69  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've seen those mods. Good luck!

    You can always "improvise" retreads by using short screws. I'm not sure if that will last as long as the originals.

    A Toro turotial gave the instruction to put a dry lubricant, example given of graphite, on the bushing of the new wheel. A lubricant seems necessary considering the moving parts. Wish I had checked here before I ordered Sears replacement wheels which are far more expensive.

    My issue was that the rear gear stripped out because the end play was WAY off on the axel!
    I shimmed it just right to allow a LITTLE end play,not 1/4 ".
